<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

<Desc/Clms Page number 14>

The present invention relates to a machine for forming a sheet of fibrous material, in particular fiber cement, suitable for the manufacture of tubes and plates.
--The invention relates more particularly to a machine of the -type in which a suction cylinder on which a continuous permeable web (felt) is partially wound - takes or receives from a feed device an aqueous paste formed of fibers and a binder (normally cement) and produces a suction of this pulp, with the consequent formation of a more or less thin layer of fibrous material on the continuous permeable web which thus transports this pulp. layer to the subsequent operation of its winding on a metal mandrel.
Machines of this type are already known in which the suction cylinder consists essentially of a cylindrical casing grooved outwardly in the longitudinal direction, possibly made up of several consecutive coaxial cylindrical parts and in which are provided inside or on the outside. outside the cylinder, means for limiting the vacuum only to the arc of the cylindrical casing in contact with the continuous permeable web and comprising the zone of formation and dehydration of the layer of fibrous material.
When the means that delimit the void are arranged
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
inside the grooved cylindrical casing, the apparatus has the drawback that the means in question are difficult to access with a view to their operation and control. oven to remedy this drawback, it has also already been proposed to dispose outside the suction cylinder the means which delimit the reception and suction zone of the dough.
In a machine of this kind, the longitudinal drainage channels of the suction cylinder are interrupted by channels arranged in planes normal to the axis of the cylinder, and these transverse channels have suction ports, and are closed in their inactive part by fixed sectors suitable for interrupting communication with the outside world.
The drawbacks of these known machines are in brief the following: a) the inevitable discontinuities in the fiber cement layer laid out on the continuous permeable sheet, due to the presence of frequent interruptions of the longitudinal drainage channels of the suction rolls. These interruptions are essential so as not to make the path that the water will have to travel too long to be definitively removed from the permeable water table. b) The subsequent discontinuity of the layer due to the fact that the suction cannot be distributed uniformly below the continuous permeable sheet due to the presence of water in the outer longitudinal channels of the suction cylinder.
All these discontinuities give rise to the definitive formation of ncn homogeneous tubes or plates.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
c) The notable resistance to rotation presented by suction cylinders: of the type in question, even if their diameter is small, by the effect of the strong friction exerted between the multiple fixed and mobile sealing parts which are however inevitable to ensure a complete seal not always easy to obtain, and which are sufficient to prevent the infiltration of air.
This resistance makes the tensile force to which the continuous permeable web which itself has the role of driving the suction cylinder in rotation, with consequently these unfortunate repercussions on the sheet of fibrous material being formed, is considerable. The result is the impossibility of giving the suction cylinder a sufficient diameter to provide a sufficient extent to obtain the necessary dehydration of the permeable layer and web without having to resort to the following particular devices to encroach upon the insufficient dehydration

The object of the present invention is mainly to eliminate the drawbacks pointed out above and to create a suction cylinder machine of simplified construction, easy to operate and which is suitable for forming a sheet of material. perfectly uniform fibrous.
The subject of the invention is therefore a machine for forming a sheet of fibrous material by removing and sucking an aqueous paste contained in a tank, by a cylinder on which a continuous permeable sheet is partially wound, this machine being characterized by the fact that the cylinder consists of a cylindrical grid, -pouvnet turn .auteur of suitable axes, the length corresponds to the width of the sheet to be forced, and forced longitudinal elements apart from each other others so as to leave free between them regular passages from one end to the other over the entire length of the grid, which cylindrical grid is presented by the arc in contact with the continuous permeable sheet,
by an opening of a suction tank closed in a sealed manner and connected to a suction source, lateral and transverse sealing means being provided between the opening of the suction tank containing the cylindrical grid, and the grid itself.
The particular conformation of the rotating cylindrical grid makes that below the permeable sheet con-

The fact that the suction tank completely surrounds the cylindrical grid which is presented only by an opening of this tank means that the fixed and movable sealing parts are notably reduced compared with those of the known suction cylinders, with the appreciable advantage of a low resistance to rotation of the cylindrical grid, of a decrease in the starting force after stopping and of the possibility of increasing the diameter of the cylindrical grid to improve dehydration of the layer of fibrous material and of the permeable web. a further advantage is given by a better preservation.

In particular, the bars 11 are inclined forward looking in the direction of rotation of the drum as indicated by an arrow in FIG. 2, with respect to the radial planes of the tambcur. The cylindrical grid carried by the drum 7 ends in two solid discs 14 and 15 which on the outside carry suitable grooves for the packing rings 16 and 17 which will be discussed below.
In addition, on the drum 7, there are annular extensions 18 and 19 which serve as lateral supports for the permeable web 13 and which carry inside in suitable grooves rings of packing 20 and 21 opposite the packing rings. 16 and 17.
The rotating cylindrical grid 6 is located in a fixed vacuum-tight tank, indicated by 22, and which is delimited by the following elements: by two flanges
23 and 24 carried by a transverse beam 25 connected to the lateral supports 1 and 2, by a transverse curved wall 26- fixed to the brackets 23 and 24, by a tubular manifold 27 arranged at the bottom and having a wide opening 28 facing upwards, a suction tube 29 being connected to this collector and going to a suction pump (not shown),

-ny3ndricuēs poâàéde reservoir at the front a large opening through which is presented the rotating cylindrical grid 6 with its surface covered by the continuous permeable sheet 13.
-The sealing between the fixed tank and the rotating grid is carried out as follows.
In the lower part of the reservoir is provided a cylinder 31 preferably rubber coated and supported - so as to be able to rotate by its journals 31 and 32 in bearings 34 t 35 of the supports 1 and 2. Against this cylinder, rubs, to the lower part, an elastic blade 36, fixed to a lip of the collector 27. This cylinder, in addition to its sealing function, provides, in cooperation with a cylinder 37 of the feed device which will be discussed below, the function of compression of the permeable web 13 which passes between the two rollers - 31 and 37 and between the last of these and the cylindrical grid 6.
The lateral sealing devices consist of two diaphragms 38 and 39 fixed to the flanges 23 and 24 of the reservoir and interposed between the pairs of packing rings 16-20 and 17-21 integral with the rotating grid. These trim rings rotate together with the

cylindrical grille and seal ##### against the inner and outer surfaces of the fixed diaphragms 38 and 39. The packing rings further delimit spaces between the fixed diaphragms and the parts integral with the rotating grille, spaces in which
<Desc / Clms Page number 10>
it is possible to maintain a suitable lubrication by introducing a suitable lubricant through the tubes 40 and 41 (see figure 1).
These diaphragms are also introduced into annular grooves of the cylinder 31, again producing the lateral sealing devices against the latter (see FIG. 3).
Sealing elements 42 (see Figures 2 and 3) are attached to the diaphragms 38 and 39 which complete the lateral sealing system in the areas between the cylinder 31 and the cylindrical grid 6.
In the upper part, the transverse sealing system between the rotating cylindrical grid and the reservoir where there is a vacuum is formed by the plate 30 on which slides, achieving the seal along a single transverse line, the sheet continuous permeable 13.
The device for supplying the machine described so far, suitable for supplying this machine with aqueous paste of fibers and cement, consists, in the case represented by a basin. or tank 43 provided with three outlets 44 through which the aqueous paste arrives under the action of a pumping system (not shown in the drawings). Dané the lower part of the tank 43 is arranged a finned rotor 45 rotating around its axis and controlled by a belt transmission, to keep the aqueous paste in good mixing condition. Side walls of the tank protrude from cylindrical protuberances 46, 47 by which the tank is supported so as to be able to rotate in bearings 48,49 fixed to the foundation 3.
By means of
<Desc / Clms Page number 11>
endless screw (not shown) which can be controlled by the flywheels 50 and which cooperate with toothed sectors integral with the protuberances 46, 47, the whole of the tank 43 can be rotated around the horizontal axis of the protuberances to bring the tank closer to the cylindrical grid or to move it away.
The protuberances 46, 47 are integral with hrides -
51, 52 which support-. By the intermediary of oscillating levers 53 and tie rods 54 which can be shortened telescopically, the cylinder 37 against which is applied an elastic blade 55. Finally, on the sides of the tank
43 are fixed sealing elements 56 which are inserted into annular grooves of the cylinder 37 and provide the means to achieve the lateral sealing of the tank with respect to the permeable sheet 13.
According to a variant shown in FIG. 4, the upper plate 30 may consist of a plate 30 'of the type of a fixed suction grid with the aim of subsequently improving the dehydration of the layer 12 and of the permeable web 13. .
In this case, the tank subjected to the vacuum directly supports the fixed grid over which passes the continuous permeable web 13 carrying the layer 12 of fibrous material and the suction through the fixed grid is ensured in this device by the vacuum that creates suction in the tank 22-
For doughs that are particularly resistant to giving up their water, for which more dehydration is required.

energetically, there is provided a final section 30 "of grid connected by a connector 57 to a reservoir 58 in communication by a tube 59 with a vacuum source (not shown) greater than that which affects the reservoir 22 with the cylindrical grid rotating.
In any case, it must be observed that unlike what happens with fixed suction boxes of known type which are added at a point placed further in the path of the permeable sheet, there is no , in this case only one sealing line transverse to the outer surface instead of three with the associated vacuum loss.
Figures 5 and 6 show another variant of the machine according to the invention which differs from the embodiment shown in cracks 1 to 3 by the sole fact that the sealing and compression cylinders 31 and 37 are missing. cylinder 3 '!, the reservoir

This? 'i? F3:. ^.' 'i, cw ": as we can see, is simplified compared to that which has been described - but it leads to greater wear, both exterior and interior, of the permeable sheet continuous, due to the contact with friction of the layer against the elastic blades

ticks, linked to having contact with the rotating organs.
It will also be noted, in Figures 5 and 6, that the tank
43 rests directly on the foundation and is not supported so that it can rotate, as in the previous embodiment.
In FIGS. 7 and 8, another embodiment of the machine according to the invention has been shown, which resembles that of FIGS. 5 and 6, except as regards the conformation of the cylindrical grid.
In fact, in the present case, the grid is not made up of detached bars, but of a cylinder 62 tooth the casing is provided with longitudinal inclined ribs 63 forming between them. grooves distributed over the entire periphery and having a length equal to the width of the layer of fibrous material to be subjected to suction.
At the bottom of the grooves are provided holes 64 for the passage of the water which has passed through the permeable sheet 13, which rests regularly and continuously on the ribs 63.
The cylinder 62 has two end cylindrical projections 65 on which are mounted .corse already described in the previous embodiment, the solid discs 14 and 15 with the packing rings 16 and 17 and the extensions 18 and 19 with the corresponding packing annequx 20 and 21.
The function of this rotating cylindrical grid variant is identical to that of the rotating grid already described.
<Desc / Clms Page number 14>
The operation of the machine according to the invention will emerge clearly from what has been said previously.
-The aqueous paste supplied by the feeding device attaches itself to the continuous permeable web forming a layer of fibrous material, while the water filters through the web and enters the vacuum tank and is sucked up and removed by the suction pump connected to the reservoir. The advantages which are obtained with the particular conformation of the screen according to the invention, rotating cylindrical, and of the vacuum reservoir are evident.
The passages of the revolving grid are continually presented and are not the seat of any obstruction at the points of contact with the permeable sheet, so that there is at all points an immediate elimination of the water under the sheet, following a radial path This results in a better and more regular filtration of the water, and consequently a better and more uniform formation of the layer of fibrous material on the permeable web, which will itself remain maintained more long effective thanks to the absence of interruptions on the load-bearing generators.
The whole machine is moreover easier to keep efficient, given the particular simplicity of conformation of the constituent elements which furthermore avoids the formation of unwelcome encrustation, thus reducing handling expenses to a minimum. . The particular -conformation of the sealing elements and their extremely small number make the driving force that the permeable web must undergo even smaller.
