MEMOIRE .ùa;C"a'i'':' PALIERS LISSES POUR TRANSPORTEURS A VIS
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
' taurillon monté tournant dans un ou plusieurs paliers fixes.
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

MEMORY .ùa; C "a'i '': 'PLAIN BEARINGS FOR SCREW CONVEYORS
This invention relates to worm conveyors1 having a shaft mounted to rotate in a fixed bearing.
In worm conveyors and other apparatus for conveying grains or powder of an abrasive material such as ore, sand, slag and certain types of mud, the screw of the rotary conveyor comprises segments of worms or blades, or parts arranged on a rotating shaft having at least one
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
'bull calf mounted rotating in one or more fixed bearings.
The bearing (s) of the shaft is or is exposed to severe abrasion where hard particles of the conveyed material enter it, damaging or jumping the bearing surfaces.
The object of the present invention is to reduce or eliminate abrasive deterioration and wear, and in accordance with this, the invention provides a via conveyor comprising a shaft mounted to rotate in a fixed bearing, the surface. bearing of the shaft and the bearing surface of the fixed bearing each consisting, at least partially, of a tungsten carbide alloy.
In one embodiment of the invention, the bearing surface of the shaft journal, made of tungsten carbide alloy, is in the form of a plurality of separate segments attached to, and distributed around, of the periphery of the shaft, while the complementary bearing surface of the fixed bearing has the shape of at least one ring or the shape of a plurality of separate segments made of tungsten carbide alloy. However, it is also possible to provide at least one tungsten carbide alloy ring for the bearing surface of the shaft.
Another object of the invention is to make the so-called "dust lubrication" (dry running) of the bearing possible by providing a space between the tungsten carbide bearing surfaces of the shaft. and the fixed bearing, this space being greater than the dimensions of the smallest particles of the material to be transported by the screw conveyor. By making the bearing surfaces of a very hard material, these surfaces will resist wear better than the previous bearings, for the same use.
Bearings of alloys such as aluminum oxide-silicon carbide are known in the art but
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
they have various disadvantages due among other things to the fact that they are poor conductors of heat. A tungsten carbide bearing according to the invention. has a lower electrical conductivity than known aluminum oxide-silicon carbide bearings and, therefore, it also has a thermally inferior insulating property.
Therefore, a tungsten carbide bearing has improved heat radiating properties, which is an advantage when the bearing is used in a dry state, i.e. without the usual film of liquid lubricant filling the surface. - space between the shaft and the bearing.
Normally, such a film of lubricant will suppress the vibrations of the shaft but as this effect does not occur when using the Bearing, - when dry, it is very important to avoid in this case using for the bearing. a brittle material that would easily break when the shaft vibrates and hits the bearing surface, Although tungsten carbide alloys have approximately the same hardness as aluminum alloys, for example 90 Rockwell A, the aluminum oxide alloy is much more brittle than the serte tungsten carbide alloy as the latter is more suitable in this respect as well.
Other aspects, characteristics and advantages of the invention will emerge from the detailed description given below and from the appended drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a cross section,
Figure 2 is a longitudinal section of a screw conveyor having an inventive bearing,
Figures 3 and 4 are similar cross sections of a second embodiment with the worm segments removed,
In these embodiments, the segments of
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
worm or blades 5 of the conveyor are fixed to a shaft 8 provided with a journal 1 preferably having the shape of a short shaft sandwiched between two tubular sections of the shaft 8 and fixed thereto.
A tungsten carbide alloy ring 2 is attached to section 1 of the shaft and is rotatably mounted in a housing 3 of a bearing cup 4. The ring 3 is also made of tungsten carbide alloy and includes a plurality of separate segments distributed around the periphery of the shaft 1. The annular space between the ring 2 and the segments of the ring 3 is greater than the dimensions of the smallest particles of the material to be transported by the conveyor to via.
The tungsten carbide alloys used can always contain an addition of titanium carbide, tantalum carbide, niobium carbide and, optionally, an additional metal from the iron group, for example cobalt.
Figures 3 and 4 show an embodiment of the invention in which the bearing surface of the shaft 1 is entirely or partially in separate bearing segments 2a, made of tungsten carbide, fixed around the periphery. - laughing of the tree. In this case, the bearing surface of the fixed bearing may comprise one or more rings 3a possibly divided into two outlets so as to facilitate their replacement. It is also possible, in this case also, to make the fixed bearing in the form of separate segments, as shown in Figure 1, and a further embodiment would be to make the two bearing surfaces 2 and 3 in the form of rings.
