"Procédé de revêtement continu de tôle métallique".
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
Suivant une variante avantageuse du procédé de l'invention;

"Continuous coating process for sheet metal".
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
The present invention, due to Messrs. DELCOUR and LIESENBORGHS, relates to a continuous coating process for metal sheets, especially applicable to steel sheets.
Among the many methods currently used for continuously coating a metal sheet by depositing a specific material, mention may be made in particular of the processes by dipping, by evaporation, by colla @ 8, etc., which are used more particularly when the material to be deposited is organic in nature with a low melting point.
When the material which constitutes the deposit is metallic in nature, and has a high melting point, a common technique consists of - ,. carry out this deposition by spraying, the metal to be deposited being supplied to the gun most often continuously, either in the form of a wire or in the form of powder, the gun possibly being with a flame, an electric arc, or a plasma, it that is to say of a type which melts the metal, before or during its projection onto the sheet to be covered. Such a gun is hereinafter referred to as a fusion gun.
In practice, such a coating process takes place as follows: an enclosure provided with two suitable orifices is continuously traversed by a steel sheet, entering said enclosure through one of the orifices and exiting through the other. During its transit period in the enclosure, the sheet is subjected to the actual coating operation, which thus takes place sheltered from any cause of external disturbance.
It is also known that, in general, the compactness and the adhesion of a coating carried out by spraying depend on the spraying speed reached by the particles of the coating during the spraying operation, an increase- ment of this speed improving the quality of the coating produced.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
The possibilities of increasing the speed of projection of the material constituting the coating are however reduced by two parasitic effects arising from the operation of the guns: one. of the effects reside in the entrainment by the jet of the gun, of the ambient fluid constituting the atmosphere of the chamber, which slows down the speed of movement of the said material, the other comes from the local overpressure caused by the outgoing gas flow gun and accumulating in the area to be covered.
There was, however, a third drawback due also to the entrainment of atmospheric gas. This being generally air, increases the oxidizing level of * and of gas surrounding the metal being deposited, and, this metal being still very hot, or even liquid at this time, it forms on the surface of the called metal an oxide layer which impairs the good adhesion of the metal on the sheet as well as the compactness of the deposited film. On the other hand, the overpressure of the gas or of the fluid at this point excessively increases the rate of cooling of the metal, thus making it more difficult to attach to the sheet.
The subject of the present invention is a coating process which makes it possible to remedy these drawbacks.
The process which is the subject of the present invention, in which a metal sheet is made to pass continuously through a notch provided with the appropriate openings and in the strip, a material intended in particular to serve as a layer is continuously projected onto said sheet. protection to this sheet, so that the material adheres to the wall of the sheet,
said material being melted inside the enclosure and projected onto the floor by means of a fusion spray gun, is essentially characterized in that the inside of the enclosure is subjected to vacuum for
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
the coating operation, which has the effect of increasing the compactness and the adhesion of the coating, thanks to the increase in the speed of projection of said material, by reducing the brake-action exerted on this material by the gas constituting the atmosphere of the enclosure,
and by reducing the cooling effect exerted by this same gas on said material *
An advantage inherent in the application of the process of the invention arises from the reduction in the oxidizing state of this atmosphere and, consequently, from its oxidizing effect both on the material and on the sheet.
As this effect is all the more harmful the higher the temperature of the deposited material,. it is understood that this pressure reduction is particularly advantageous when the material to be deposited is of the metallic type with a high melting point *
According to an advantageous variant of the process of the invention;
the beneficial effect of the pressure reduction is further increased, if the interior atmosphere of the enclosure is itself at least in the zone where the actual deposition of the material on the sheet, consisting of a gas, takes place. non-oxidizing or neutral, this gas being able to be introduced into the enclosure by means of the gun, or by means of a separate supply,
According to another advantageous variant of the method of the invention, the interior atmosphere of the enclosure is formed with an inert gas, which can advantageously be the one supplying the gun, in particular if the latter is of the plasma type,
and the said gas is recycled in the gun after it has been sucked out of the enclosure. In this way, the inert gas can be used simultaneously for two different purposes, protecting the stinger of the gun and protecting the deposited metal and the mile while recovering most of this inert gas.
