et sa propre paroi extérieure une chambre annulaire 3 dont l'air ou le remplissage isolant qu'elle contient constitue un isolement thermique qui empêche le flux calorifique, dégage par l'opération de soudure, de s'étendre radialement à la paroi du manchon 2 et d'atteindre une température capable de détério- rer l'enduit protecteur 5 qui recouvre la face intérieure de ce manchon 2. L'extrémité 4 du bout mâle est largement biseautée ou arrondie dans un triple but ;

<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

"Welding assembly device for tubes coated internally with a protective coating"
The present invention relates to a simple and inexpensive device; allowing the assembly by welding of tubes in; étal protected internally, totally or at the ends only by a coating of synthetic material whose melting point is lower than the high temperature given off by the heat source carrying out the weld.
For this purpose and according to the invention the smooth end known as "male end" or "cord end" of each tube is provided internally with a sleeve which forms an insulating annular chamber intended to prevent the direct diffusion of heat. in the radial direction of the tube during the welding operation, thus avoiding destruction of the protective coating, while the other end, known as the "interlocking end", is bulged so as to @

present a flare in which the bead end of the tube to be assembled will be engaged, which flare is provided at a distance.
appropriate, a dam or padding made of material based on elastomer or flexible synthetic resin, the purpose of which is to seal the assembly and to oppose, on the one hand, the - flow, in the pipe, of the molten covering coating in the vicinity of the axis of the transverse weld and coming either from the outer wall of the bead end, or from the inner wall of the flare and, from on the other hand, at the inlet of the fluid transported into the free space between these two walls.
The assembly is carried out by the axial introduction, manual or mechanical according to the diameter, of the bead end of a tube in the flaring of the tube which precedes it. Depending on the operating pressure of the pipe, the two tubes can be welded together by transverse welding, like an assembly of the common "slip-joint" type, the weld bead resting either on the entire thickness of the pipe. the wall of the flaring, either on only part of it, or by simple spot welding, for example on four generatrices determined by two diameters intersecting at right angles, without the risk of damaging the interior lining of one or the other tube.
For pressures of medium importance, the welding of the assembly can even be considered as superfluous, the barrier with which the flare is provided ensuring in this case, thanks to the compression exerted on it by the bead end, a sufficient seal for these pressures ..
A preferred embodiment of the invention will be described below, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: FIG. 1 is an axial sectional view of the device according to the invention before assembly ; - Figure 2 is a similar view showing 1'assembly produced.
Gomma shows it in figure 1, the cord end 1 is provided antrieurcment, before application of the dream encircling protective, with a

sleeve 2, of a length proportionate to the diameter of the tube and fixed to the inner wall of the male end, by welding, crimping, gluing or any other suitable means, which sleeve is for example scalded out of the sheet metal by stamping or deformation, or is produced by means of a tube section flared at both ends, or in any other way, so as to form between the inner wall of the male end 1, on which it rests,
and its own outer wall an annular chamber 3 whose air or the insulating filling it contains constitutes a thermal insulation which prevents the heat flow, released by the welding operation, from extending radially to the wall of the sleeve 2 and to reach a temperature capable of damaging the protective coating 5 which covers the inner face of this sleeve 2. The end 4 of the male end is largely bevelled or rounded for a triple purpose;
firstly, to prevent the coating 5 of the socket 7 from deteriorating by friction when fitting the tubes, then to make it easier to meet the male end 1 and the dam 8 fixed inside the flare 7 as well as the compression of said elastic barrier, and finally allow the clearance between the outside diameter of the male end 1 and the inside diameter of the flare 7 to be reduced.
The flare 7 is obtained by treating the end of the tube opposite the bead end 1 according to the techniques usually used for making joints such as the "slip-joint", the diameter of this flare being such as the clearance. between the inner wall thereof and the outer wall of the. bead end 1 is reduced to a minimum compatible with the process, the inner end of the flare 7 being rounded to prevent damage to the protective coating 5 with which the end of the bead end 1 is provided, when the aocostage of the tubes. This flare 7 is provided internally, at a suitable distance, with a barrier or packing 8 of spherical shape,

polygonal, or other suitable, elastomeric material or flexible synthetic resin such as, for example, polysulfide, polyurethane, or any other material suitable for this use, is adherent by the very nature of the resin to the metal , or to the synthetic resin coating 5 which covers the socket 7, or else fixed by gluing or any other suitable means.
The dam 8 has the preferred but not exclusive shape shown by way of example in FIG. 1. According to this preferred form, the dam 8 can in particular take the appearance of a circular sleeve of largely internal trapezoidal section. inclined inwardly both on its front part 8a to allow easy engagement of the bevelled and rounded end.
4 of the cord end 1 than on its rear part 8b to prevent the backflow of the material from the barrier. 'The middle part 8c is cylindrical in order to achieve, by the compression exerted by the bead end 1, the sealing of the assembly and to form the actual barrier on the one hand to the flow in the pipe of the part of the armature 5 which internally covers the flare 7 and externally the bead end 1 and which would be melted during the transverse welding operation, and, on the other hand,
at the entry of the fluid conveyed by the pipe into the annular space 9 between the inner wall of the socket 7 and the outer wall of the bead end 1 which forms after the tubes have been assembled and which is shown in FIG. 2 After machining the bead end 1 as well as the flaring 7 and adapting the sleeve 2 to said end 1, each tube receives at the factory the suitable internal protection 5, formed as described above, ie over the entire surface of the tube. tube if the aggressive nature of the fluid conveyed so requires, either up to a suitable distance only,
on the inner and outer end of the bead end 1 and on the inner end of the flare 7, the remainder of the inner surface of the. tube being protected
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
by a coating whose melting point may be lower than that of the coating 5, the external protection 6 possibly required by the destination of the pipe, depending on whether it will be buried or aerial, being able to be applied at the same time.
The assembly of the tubes intended to construct the pipe is carried out, as shown in Figure 2, by the axial introduction of the bead end 1 of a tube into the flare 7 of the tube which precedes it, the bevelled end and rounded end 4 of the bead 1 engaging in the circular elastic barrier 8 which it compresses, thus achieving the seal at medium pressures, the device 'allowing in the case of higher pressures, the welding of the terminal end of the 'interlocking 7 on the outer wall @ of the bead end 1, depending on the operating pressure of the pipe.
This welding can be carried out either by spots or by a weld bead resting on the partial or total thickness of the wall of the flaring 7, without damaging the inner lining of the tubes despite the heat released during the process. 'surgery.
@ Welding.
It follows from the above that the device according to the invention allows, as it appears! clearly from fig. 2, to ensure, after assembly of the tubes, a continuous internal protective coating over the entire length of the pipe, without requiring any further intervention.
In addition, the manufacture of the tubes is considerably facilitated due to the considerable simplification provided by the device in the production of the ends of tubes coated with an internal coating.
It goes without saying that when the liquid transported is not of an aggressive nature and its possible introduction into the space between the outer surface of the male end and the inner surface of the flare of the female end of the following tube does not presents no risk of corrosion, the presence of the dam (8) will be superfluous.
