<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

<Desc/Clms Page number 7>

<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
rouleau 14.
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>
rouleaux 14, 16.

Wire ooloriour apparatus
The invention, relating to the printing or coloring of the yarn, relates more particularly to a clean device @. ensure better random application of color on a wire or other similar material,
For the production of many articles the ornamental color pattern of which is to be preferably random, extensive use is made of yarn and similar materials, the decoration of which is made of successive lengths printed or dyed in different colors.
We will particularly mention in this regard the production of
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
blankets or the like, where such an ornamental thread, last stitched into a background fabric, is intended to give the product that decorative pattern in completely random colors. The degree of irregularity of the colored pattern in the blanket finally produced obviously depends on the random mode in which the yarn is subjected to coloring.
If the application of color to the yarn is truly random and non-repeating, the colored pattern in the product obtained from that yarn will exhibit these desirable qualities to the same degree, and the reverse is generally true as well. A yarn which is decorated as just indicated and which is intended for the manufacture of blankets is generally designated by the qualifier "dyed by plaoes".
The commercial interest of spot-dyed yarn is sufficiently strong that there are commonly several models of coloring devices for the production of this material. By way of example, one universally known form of apparatus heretofore available in the art is collated which utilizes several printing rolls arranged spaced apart from each other along a printing station.
These printing rollers have the effect of inking different lengths of the wire which is drawn through the printing station. In general, the peripheral surface of each roll. The printing press has recesses in selected areas to bring the printing or coloring substance into contact with the lengths of the yarn which is in alignment with these recessed areas and , if these recessed areas of the various printing rolls are properly arranged, it is possible to apply the coloring over the entire length of the wire.
Although there are many
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
possibilities, actually implemented in the use of this wall device? Uno random coloring with the thread, it is obligatory that there be a repetition in the sequence of the colors applied to each successive turn of the printing rolls. Thus, this yarn dyeing apparatus, like all those which are in general use and represent the solution heretofore provided to the problem of producing a random "spot-topped" yarn, is not all. quite satisfactory.
From a return point of view, the aim of the invention is to remedy this drawback and the other defects.

The characteristics and advantages of the invention may vary to a considerable extent in the form of the shoulder strap whereby it has movable surfaces which converge towards each other at a pinch line running perpendicular to the direction of the strap. movement of these surfaces.
According to the simplest embodiment, cos surfaces can take the form of peripheral surfaces of a pair of rollers mounted to pivot and suitably pressed against each other at a pinching line.
These co-operating surfaces of the rollers form, along the line of pinça-0, a tank for the dye or coloring substance which is deposited in a multitude of colors in this tank by suitable metering or feeding means. The yarn which is to be "spot dyed" is drawn directly through the tank so as to come into contact with the coloring substance therein.
An essential feature of the apparatus is the selective orientation of the path of the wire which enters the vessel. formed an angle (and, therefore, an angle with the pinch line), so that the rotation of the rollers causes the wire to tilt not only in its longitudinal direction through the chain, but also in a trajectory in the longitudinal direction of the tub, until the wire follows a straight trajectory perpendicular to the nip line.
In this way, seeds of different yarn lengths are successively moved through the different colors of the coloring substance which are found at several locations along the tank.
This abbreviated description will be better understood than other purposes, features and advantages of the invention.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
tion with reference to the following detailed description of an embodiment of the invention, currently preferred [Rais nevertheless given by way of example, this description being considered in conjunction with the accompanying drawings.
Fig. 1 represents sohematically in porspootive a yarn dyeing apparatus having the characteristics of the invention.
Fig. 2 is a side elevational view of this apparatus, showing the tank for the coloring substance, formed by a pair of cooperating rollers.
Figs. 3A and 33 are front elevational views of the apparatus, showing its parts in certain positions of movement which have the effect of determining a movement of the yarn in a direction perpendicular to the rollers, namely:
Fig. 3A illustrates, in solid and broken lines, a change in the relative positions of certain parts of the apparatus which modify the path of 'passage of the wire' through this apparatus, et.la. fig. 3B likewise illustrates, in solid and broken lines, the successive transverse positions which a strand of wire takes along the roll, as a consequence of this angular path, and FIG. 4 shows a sample length of the produced colored yarn, on an enlarged scale, obtained from the apparatus.
To refer to the drawings, there is shown in particular in FIG. 4 a sample length of wire
10 of which different parts are. dyed, or printed in different colors, for example the partial or upper segments
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
delimited R, Y and 0 (corresponding respectively to the colors red, yellow and orange).
The yarn 10 can be one fiber. synthetic or natural and, in the resting state where successive segments of length are differently colored; it finds wide use in the manufacture of many products with a random decorative pattern. Especially the manufacture of blankets or the like, in which it is very desirable that the yarn which is last stitched into a background fabric when making a blanket gives rise to a decorative pattern. completely random.
To achieve this, the successive segments of the yarn 10 must be printed in non-repeating sequences of different colors and, in order to obtain a completely random pattern in the finished product, the lengths of the yarn cases must also be printed. differ from each other in a completely random fashion along the length of the wire. This ornamental technique of thread, applied in particular in the manufacture of blankets, is sometimes called "spot dyeing".
The drawings schematically illustrate a yarn dyeing apparatus, generally designated 12 and capable of producing 10 spot dyed yarn, characterized by a degree of random application of color which was not achievable. with the hitherto known yarn coloring apparatus. The apparatus 12 can be presented under many particular forces: in its preferred form, it comprises a pair of rollers 14, 16, suitably mounted so as to rotate in the direction of the arrows A and to make contact with each other. along a nip line N which is practically parallel to the axis of rotation of the rollers.
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
In the upper position, above the roller 14, is mounted a device 18 for supplying coloring substance, the skiff of which is to deposit loads 20 of coloring substance on the roller 14. As emerges more clearly from FIG. . 2, the peripheral surfaces of rollers 14 and 16 cooperate in an area just before the nip line N to form a tank 22 for the charges 20 of coloring substance which are entrained in the tank by the rotation of the roller 14. Obviously, these chargea 20 accumulated
EMI7.1
mulont in the tank 22 to form clusters S'3Pti.3 of edified colors of the substance.
In this way, different charges 20 of coloring substance, having different colors, are applied at several locations along the tub 22 for application to the wire 10.
Although the colourant feeder 18 can take several forms, in a preferred embodiment it comprises a tray 24 suitably mounted in an upper position above the roller 14 and, at will, held stationary in the chain. position or vertices in a reciprocating movement along a path M parallel to the axis of rotation of the roller 14.
The tray 24 carried a number of reservoirs 26 suitable for storing a printing ink, dye or other suitable printing substance, preferably in a very viscous state. Chap @ e container 26 is designed so as to allow the flow of the printing substance or liquid by gravity or under controlled pressure on the surface of the roller 14. As previously indicated, these charges 20 of printing substance. 'printers are brought into the tank 22 by the rotation of the
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
roller 14.
To obtain a random arrangement of the different colors of the printing substance on the ions of the tank 22, it suffices to change the colors supplied by the different tanks 26, or to change the position of the device 18 along the line. path M between successive operations of depositing the coloring charges.
For economical operation of the apparatus 12, it is desirable, for obvious reasons, that several lengths or strands of wire 10 be processed at the same time. As each individual strand behaves similarly, it is understood that the parts of the following description which relate to a particular strand of the yarn also apply to the other strands of the yarn which are treated simultaneously by the apparatus 12.
Each yarn 10 intended for the "spot dyeing" treatment by apparatus 12 comes from a suitable feed, for example a conventional type spool from which it is continuously unwound and guided along a path passing through. nip line N from rollers 14, 16 to a suitable take-up spool disposed on the other side of rollers 14, 16. Obviously this path of wire 10 exposed the wire to the substance of the wire. impression, since the thread is effectively drawn through the loads 20 of cotton material in the tank 22.
An essential feature of the apparatus 12 is the selective change in the angle of the path of the wire 10 entering the vessel 22, so that in addition to the longitudinal passage of the wire through the vessel 22, it is also necessary. also produces movement of the yarn in the longitudinal direction of the vessel 22. This movement of the yarn in the longitudinal direction of the opener 22 has the effect of exposing
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
successive lengths of yarn in different colors of the printing substance arranged along the tank. As will be better understood by considering FIGS. 1, 3a and 3B, the wire 10, before being threaded between the rollers 14 and 16, passes through a grid 28 which maintains the distance and the parallelism of the different strands of the wire relative to each other.
The piston rod 30 of a pneumatic or hydraulic cylinder, or other driving device, is suitably connected to the grid 28 to impart thereto a reciprocating motion along a path. trajectory? substantially parallel to the horizontal direction of the cylinders 14, 16.
As can be seen from fig. 3A, 3B, one of the possible paths of the wire 10 is that indicated in solid lines in FIG. 3A and which represents a longitudinal movement of the wire 10 in a straight line through the nip line N.
When this path of the wire 10 is reached, the grid 28 is moved to the position shown in broken lines in fig 3A, in which the direction of the wire forms an angle with the nip line. Once this oblique path is established, the continuous rotation of the rollers 14 and 16 will ultimately cause the wire 10 to be brought into the position shown in solid lines in FIG. 33, in which the wire enters in a straight line in the nip line N, but this time at the opposite end of the rollers 14, 16.
As clearly indicated by the wire 10a shown in isolation in FIG. 33, the movement of this wire when it passes from an oblique path to a path perpendicular to the clamping line N follows a path T oriented in the longitudinal direction of the
<Desc / Clms Page number 10>
rollers 14, 16. This movement therefore has the effect of causing the wire 10a to pass successively through the various charges 20 of printing substance, that is to say, in the particular example of the rod 3B, through the charges designated by O, Y and R, which will give rise to successively colored segments 0, Y and R on wire 10a of fig 4.
From the above, it will be readily understood that the yarn dyeing apparatus 12 is capable of "spot dyeing" yarn in a completely arbitrary and non-repetitive fashion, so that commercial products made from this yarn feature a decorative pattern in completely random colors. Cala is particularly important in the manufacture of blankets and the like and, therefore, the apparatus 12 represents a significant technical advance in the equipment intended for this industry.
It is moreover of course understood that the embodiment of the invention which has been described above, with reference to the appended drawings, was given purely as an indication and in no way limiting and that numerous modifications. fications can be made without departing for cola from the scope of the present invention.
