<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
d'environ 1700 C.
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
acceptables.

"Glasses with a low coefficient of thermal expansion." 1) Patent application filed in U, S, A, June 21, 1965 under the n '465.699 in the name of Mr. Nils Tryggve Emanuel Alfredsson BAAK,
The present invention relates to new glass compositions and, more particularly, to glass compositions with a low coefficient of thermal expansion and a relatively low melting point,
Few glasses have a presentiment of a coefficient of thermal expansion approaching zero at temperatures between 0 and 300 C. In addition, dome when glasses with a relatively low thermal expansion coefficient are available, a serious problem. frequently lies in the fact that the masses,
used for the production of these glass' ,, melt very with difficulty, even at temperatures
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
of about 1700 C.
The invention therefore aims to provide glass compositions exhibiting desirable properties and characteristics.
It is an object of the present invention to provide glass compositions exhibiting a relatively low coefficient of thermal expansion.
Another object of the present invention is to provide glass compositions exhibiting a relatively low coefficient of thermal expansion and good meltability.
In addition, the invention aims to provide glasses based on sulcus and titanium oxide which exhibit good resistance to thermal shock and which melt at relatively low temperatures.
In addition, the invention aims to provide silica-titanium oxide compositions exhibiting desirable properties so that they are suitable for many purposes of use.
Another object of the invention is to provide silica-titanium oxide glasses having low thermal expansion coefficients and high thermal shock resistance, so that they are suitable for optical apparatus.
It is also another object of the invention to provide articles made from novel silica-titanium oxide glass compositions and exhibiting desirable properties.
Further, a further object of the present invention is to provide optical apparatuses exhibiting desirable properties and characteristics.
In order to achieve the objects enumerated above, the present invention provides glass compositions exhibiting certain properties and characteristics of high value, produced on the basis of silica and titanium oxide to which are added oxides of. aluminum or boron or both.
According to the present invention, the glass compositions contain SiO 2 in an amount of 60 to 94 mole%, TiO 2 in an amount of 1.5 to 22 mole:, B2O3 in an amount of 0 to 18 mole% and A12O3 in an amount of 0 to 10 mole%, based on the total composition which contains, at least, either B2O3 or
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
of A12O3.
In accordance with the present invention, the glass compositions. are of the silica-titanium oxide-boron oxide (SiO2-TioO2-B2O3) system in which the silica is present in an amount of 60 to 94 mole%, the titanium oxide in an amount of 1.5 to 22 moles % and boron oxide in an amount of 0.1-18 mole%, based on the entire composition.
In addition, the present invention provides glass compositions of the silica-titanium oxide-alumina (SiO2-TioO2-A12O3) system in which the silica is present in an amount of 60 to 94 mole%, the titanium oxide. in an amount of 1.5 to 22 mole% and the alumina in an amount of 2 to 10 mole%.
Further, the present invention resides in a silica-titanium oxide-alumina (SiO2 - TiO2 - A12O3) system in which silica is present in an amount of 84-86 mole%, titanium oxide in an amount of 8. at 11 mole% and alumino in an amount of 5 to 7 mole%, based on the entire composition.
The present invention also provides glasses of the silica-titanium oxide-boron oxide-alumina (SiO2-TioO2-B2O3-A12O3) system.
In the latter system, silica is present in an amount of 68 to 87 moles:, titanium oxide in an amount of 1.5 to 22 mole%, B2O3 in an amount of 4 to 14 mole% and A12O3 in a quantity of 2 to 10 Mies:.
Other objects, characteristics and advantages of the present invention will emerge from the following description.
Glass compositions according to the present invention exhibit highly desirable characteristics due to a low coefficient of linear thermal expansion and a relatively low melting temperature. Until now, glasses exhibiting a coefficient of thermal expansion which approaches zero 3 at temperatures between 0 and 300 C, were relatively few in number and, moreover, most of these glasses with low known thermal expansion coefficient exhibited a relatively low fluidity, so that the parisons used to obtain these glasses, melted with great difficulty at temperatures
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
acceptable.
The glasses according to the present invention are very advantageous for many useful purposes and objects. By virtue of their excellent properties, the glasses according to the present invention are particularly suitable for optical apparatus where it is essential to be able to have materials with a low coefficient of thermal expansion. The glasses, according to the present invention, are more particularly suitable for the manufacture of mirrors with a low coefficient of thermal expansion, which are used for telescopes and similar devices.
Further, the glasses according to the present invention are advantageous as a base for printed circuits where a low coefficient of thermal expansion is essential as well as for level indicators and laboratory equipment.

During the preparation of the compositions, of the example described below, the masses were mixed by hand, in order to obtain a homogeneous mixture. It is also possible to use suitable mechanical devices for mixing these masses for the manufacture of the glasses described.
All the glass compositions were melted in platinum / rhodium crucibles. For the intended purpose, however, it is also possible to use crucibles of fused silica. In the examples given below, the volume of the fusions was different. A typical sample weighed 100 g. The melting was carried out in an electric furnace in which the melting temperature was, in most cases, from about 1600 to 1700 C, In some cases the components of the mass were fried at 1500 C , they were then cooled, crushed and remelted at 1650 C. It was observed that after 16 to 17 hours, the melting was generally sufficient to obtain a satisfactory erre.
In order to determine the coefficient of thermal expansion, rods were drawn from the fusions. To obtain these rods, a silica or mullite bar was dipped into the molten glass to begin drawing the rods. To determine the coefficient of thermal expansion in order to meet the figures given in the example, a usual dilatometric method (0 to 300 ° C.) was used with samples of approximately 10 cm. A limited number of determinations for samples, both annealed and non-annealed, have been made on the Carson-Dice dilatometer over a wider range of temperatures.
The following example serves to illustrate the processes and raw materials used in the masses indicated in the following tables:

It is well known that the various components of the finished glass can be introduced into the mass in various forms.
For example, the components can be used in the form of their oxide or in any other form, provided that the final composition is not disturbed or adversely affected.
Likewise, small amounts of other materials, such as impurities present in the raw materials, can be added as long as they do not adversely affect the finished product or its properties.
The figures which follow illustrate the characteristics of low expansion and low contraction of a glass in accordance with the invention, obtained from the following composition: in moles%:

In the above description and in the following claims, the amounts in number 1 of the individual components are calculated on the basis of the raw materials. The quantity of B2O3 is therefore calculated without loss of this component during the manufacture of the glass. Care must therefore be taken to prevent losses of B2O3. Slight losses, due to volatilization, however occurred in some of the compositions listed above.
