<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

"Device and procedure for radioactive decontamination of milk"
A device and method for efficiently contaminating large amounts of liquid *! food and other foods, particularly milk and drinking water.
In general, for the decontamination of milk, the following principles come into play: a) ion exchange 1) discontinuous method ("batchprocess")
2) continuous method (resin column) b) electrodialysis c) normal dairy techniques d) application of (tricalcium phosphate).
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
Under c) is understood the manufacture of cream, skimmed milk, whey, casein.
On average three quarters of the radioactivity of whole milk is found in the deproteinized whey. This is valid at least for Cs-137, J-131 and Sr-90. Method d) is very simple and could even be done by the consumer.
Until now, no procedure is known capable of simply carrying out the decontamination of very large quantities of milk continuously.
The essential characteristic of the device according to the invention consists in that means provided with decontaminating properties are fixed on a mobile support and of large surface, the support possibly being able to be vibrated, and the device being, optionally, provided with means for regenerating the decontaminating properties of the means fixed to the support. The means provided with a decontaminating activity can be balls of ion exchange resins, the support can be an endless belt passing and returning on a series of cylinders.
In what follows @@ and to better illustrate the invention and by way of nonlimiting example, a description is given of an embodiment of the device according to the invention; On an endless belt, Fig, 1 (1), made of steel, is fixed a layer of beads of ion exchange resins, Fig. 2 (2), bordered by bands of elastic material, Fig, 2 (3) of a height greater than the layer of resins, in order to prevent the liquid to be decontaminated from flowing on the sides.
The moving movement of the belt, Fig. 1 (1), is provided by a motor driving the cylinder (4), which in turn drives the belt 1. The upper part, slightly inclined,

passes over a series of cylinders (5) between which are placed vibrators (6) which, by their vibration, vibrate corresponding parts of the audossus mat and thus ensure an optimal exchange between the liquid to be decontaminated and the surface of the resin balls ion exchangers attached to the mat.
At the cylinder (7) the decontaminated liquid falls into a container (8). The belt 1, going up behind the cylinder 7 passes in front of a scraper (9) to retain most of the liquid entrained by the belt. Afterwards, the belt 1 passes through a series of receptacles whose pronier (10) serves to rinse the belt of the entrained liquid. Slightly running water is in the container 10. In the second container (11) there is a regeneration solution to regenerate the decontaminating activity of the beads attached to the mat.
The belt then passes through a third container, the rinsing container, to offer the liquid to be decontaminated, arriving at (13), a freshly regenerated ion exchange resin. The process allowing the use of carpet over very large areas can achieve continuous radioactive decontamination and high throughput.
It is obvious that the inventive idea could be realized in another form than that described above.
If the liquid to be decontaminated is milk, it is preferable to pass the endless belt through a first rinsing container 10.
- The vibration of the parts of the belt where the liquid to be decontaminated flows can be effected by means of mechanical vibrators, as described. On the other hand, nothing prevents the application of ultrasonic vibrators or other means offered by the state of the

Another embodiment of the invention, which is very advantageous, consists in causing the mat to circulate in the sound opposite to the direction of flow of the milk.
This embodiment has the advantage of presenting the freshly regencyed resins to already heavily decontaminated milk.
This is likely to increase the efficiency of the decontamination operation.
The essential advantage of the invention consists in that with the aid of a device and of the method according to the invention the solution of the problem of determining food liquids can be achieved on a technical scale and industrial
