<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

Ingot casting process.
The advantages of effervescent steel ingots over calmed steels are well known. Besides the less significant chipping that the effervescent steel ingots undergo during blooming operations, the surface of these ingots is of a higher cleanliness than that of calmed steel ingots.
On the other hand, the phenomenon of effervescence of the steel causes a segregation of the elements accompanying the iron (sulfur and phosphorus) such that there result from it significant variations in the composition of the steel and that the core of the ingot contains a lot more impurities than the outer part. The larger the ingot the segregation is all the more pronounced, which is particularly troublesome at the present time when the tendency is to cast ingots of large dimensions.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
The segregation of the elements, due to the effervescence of the steel, limits the possibilities of using effervescent steels and makes it possible in certain cases to prefer calmed steels despite the higher manufacturing cost of the latter. .
The segregation of impurities in an effervescept steel ingot increases in proportion to the duration of the effervescence. It is therefore possible to limit this segregation by interrupting the effervescence of the steel after a certain time. In doing so, we reduce the * said disadvantages. segregation while also retaining the advantages of effervescent steel from the point of view of surface cleanliness and dropping during blooming.
The present invention relates to a process for casting an effervescent steel ingot mold in which the segregation of impurities is limited by stopping the effervescence of the steel.
Various means of blocking the effervescence phenomenon have already been proposed. Thus, it was recommended to put a heavy cover on the ingot; this procedure has the drawback of difficult handling of devices. The addition of aluminum at the top of the ingot can also interrupt the effervescence of the steel but causes the appearance of inclusions in the metal. Other processes, such as placing a sheet sprayed with water on the head of the ingot, present a certain danger.
The effervescent steel casting process in an ingot mold, object of the present invention, is characterized in that with a view to limiting the segregation of impurities, the effervescence of the steel is stopped by adding at the top of the ingot an agent of inert blocking, for example dry ice or liquid nitrogen. Carbon dioxide snow can advantageously be pulverized. These blockers

Inerts have the advantage of not introducing impurities into the steel., @ to which they are added, because they are in the form of gases which evaporate.
In addition, they ensure a rapid and satisfactory interruption of the effervescence phenomenon, at the time required so that the steel has had time to be subjected to this phenomenon to acquire the advantages brought about by the effervescence, while at the same time. not undergoing excessive segregation of impurities.
