<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

Method for measuring the level of a metal bath.
The present invention relates to a method for measuring the level of a metal bath and particularly of the cast iron in the crucible of a blast furnace.
The level of pig iron in the crucible of a blast furnace is an indication of the functioning of the ore reduction operation carried out.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
Indeed, if this level is too low compared to what one expects for the fixed rate of march, one can conclude from it that the production of cast iron is insufficient and @ that there is a degradation of the work of crucible and / or tank work. The man experienced in the matter obviously knows the operating factors of the two aforementioned parts of the blast furnace and can determine the cause of this deterioration all the more precisely when he knows the result, that is to say insufficient production of cast iron.
If the level of the pig iron in the blast furnace crucible is too high, it can obviously be concluded that the production of pig iron is too high compared to that expected. In this case, there is also a degradation of operation, but in the opposite direction to the previous case of crucible work and / or blast furnace work, which must be absolutely remedied. as quickly as possible, because the case currently considered may have much more serious consequences than the first.
An abundant production of cast iron can cause the level of cast iron in the crucible to rise fairly quickly until it reaches the level of the blowing nozzles with all the consequences one can imagine: clogging of the nozzles, deterioration of the said nozzles. nozzles and all accessories, damage to the coatings or even to the external shielding and shutdown of the blast furnace for a long time necessary to repair the damage caused.
If we want to consider the worst and it still happens quite frequently nowadays, a disturbance of the walking pace can even lead to a perforation of the crucible.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
with damage all the more important as the perforation is itself more important, with risk of fatal accidents and inevitably long immobilization of the blast furnace for repairs which can amount to several tens of millions of dollars. frank.
Knowing as precisely as possible the level of the cast iron in the crucible of a blast furnace is therefore of very great importance and constitutes one of the objects of the present invention.
The method of the present invention is based on the fact that all solid or liquid bodies emit infra-red radiation whose wavelength varies with the temperature of said corns.
In accordance with this fact, the method of measuring the level of a metal bath, and particularly of the cast iron in the crucible of a blast furnace, is essentially characterized in that one inspects the outer walls of the en- enclosure containing the said metal bath by means of an optical device sensitive to infrared radiations and in that the level of the melt is deduced following the difference in wavelength of the infrared radiations emitted by the part of the walls covering the volume of the crucible occupied by the cast iron, which results in a lighter area on the image perceived by the observer by means of the optical apparatus used.
Of course, the optical device used, for example an infrared converter, can be provided with
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
filters corresponding to a certain range of radiations depending on the temperature range to which one is addressing.
In this text, it was mainly a question of a blast furnace crucible, but it is understood that the field of application of the process of the present invention is not limited to this single case. It is also applicable to any enclosure containing a metal bath, for example a converter or a melting furnace, the outer walls of which are suitable for an examination such as that described above.
