<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

Purification process.
The present invention relates to the purification of adiponitrile.
Adiponitriles are produced on a large scale, for example, by catalytic dehydration of mixtures of ammonia and adipic diacid. The liquid product of the dehydration of these mixtures contains various impurities some of which are difficult and expensive to remove. The crude reaction product also contains water and ammonia, which can be removed to a large extent simultaneously by distillation or other means before carrying out further purifications.
The invention provides a process for the purification of impure liquid adiponitrile, wherein the adiponitrile is cooled.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
so as to cause its partial crystallization and the crystalline adipontriole is separated from the mother liquor.
The point of crystallization depends both on the concentration and on the nature of the impurities present. It is generally advantageous to cool the impure liquid adipontiril to a temperature between -10 C and +2.5 C.
The amount of adiponitrile crystallizes can vary between wide limits, but is determined primarily by the consistency of the crystal suspension that can be handled.
The crystalline adipontiril separated from the mother liquor can be advantageously washed with refined liquid adipontiril having a lower impurity content than that of the crude adiponitrile which is desired to be purified. Washing can be carried out in successive stages or against the current. The temperature of the liquid adipontriole used for washing is advantageously 2.5 to 12.5 C and is preferably close to its crystallization point which is + 2.5 C, so as not to cause the melting of the liquid. 'a larger quantity of adiponitrile crystals than necessary which would reduce the yield.
The amount of liquid adipontitrile used for washing adiponitrile crystals is preferably 25 to 50 parts by weight per 100 parts by weight of crystalline adiponitrile, but! the amount to be used depends on various factors such as the impurity content of the adiponitrile to be purified, the way in which the crystals are separated from the liquor. mother and the manner in which the washing of the crystals is carried out.
Wash liquors can be recycled by combining and mixing with impure adiponitrile prior to cooling and crystallization, but alternatively they can be combined and mixed with the mother liquor which is then refrigerated. and partially crystallized to give a new amount of adipontiril. Alternatively, the mother liquor can be cooled
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
and partially crystallized without having been mixed with the washings to give further amounts of adiponitrile. The process can then be repeated until the separation of the adiponitrile crystals from the mother liquor is no longer possible.
The purification method described above is useful for the purification of adiponitrile produced by various methods and for the purification of adiponitrile already partially purified by other means. '.' - The invention is illustrated by the following example.
EXAMPLE.-
Crude liquid adiponitrile 2600 parts) obtained. by dehydration. catalyst of a mixture of ammonia and adipic acid, then by removing the bulk of the water and the ammonia is cooled with stirring until a thick suspension is formed. The crystallization temperature is + 0.3 C.
The mother liquor is separated from the adiponitrile crystals by filtration and the filter cake is washed at +3 C with 400 parts of refined adipontitrile. The amount of purified adiponitrile thus obtained by crystallization is 1044. parties.
