Organe d'obturation.
Toutefois,on
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

Sealing organ.
The invention relates to a closure member between flange assemblies in a vacuum installation.
As is known, in such flange assemblies used in high vacuum systems, a metal sealing ring can be used as the sealing means between the flanges, which prevents deterioration of the vacuum. Preferably, the sealing bagae is made of a metal which forms under the effect of the clamping force of the flanges, which ensures a satisfactory hermetic seal. In addition, the clamping ring must be of a metal which is not melted during a firing process.
A preferred metal for this purpose is gold, but in view of the high cost of a sealing means made of this metal, the amount of metal must be reduced to a minimum still ensuring a good seal. However, we

then obtains sealing rings so thin that they cause difficulties during tightening, so that a good arrangement of the ring relative to the flanges is a thorny problem,
Among other things, the invention makes it possible to position the obturator ring in a precise manner. The invention further provides means ensuring the desired tightening of the flange assembly and moreover an appropriate support for the sealing ring so that the latter can be easily handled and stored before tightening.
According to the invention the sealing means to be used between flange assemblies in a vacuum system comprises a relatively ductile sealing ring which is held in a plate-shaped support, formed so as to facilitate the correct location of the valve. the sealing ring between said flanges.
In one embodiment of the invention, the support is a substantially non-ductile material such as stainless steel and has a thickness within that of the ductile sealing ring, the thickness ratio being such that when the flanges - q-aes are tight against the support one is assured of an appropriate degree of deformation of the sealing ring.
In another embodiment of the invention, the holder is made of a material which can be substantially destroyed at cooking temperatures. This manner of removing the support offers the advantage that the faces of the flange are maintained in a state which facilitates subsequent use and which eliminates the need to remove the molten residue remaining after cooking. We can-. use for this purpose paper or other material which destroys itself by combustion, in which case after combustion of the paper, the sealing ring retains the required position between the flanges. In this embodiment, the degree of clamping of the flange can be obtained by the inclusion of spacer discs of substantially non-ductile material, suitably disposed, on the
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
support surface.
These gap discs can be made up. killed by stainless steel strips and be fixed to the support by adhesion or other suitable means.
In another embodiment of the invention, an annular support has a profile corresponding to the flanges and this ring is provided with one or more arms, directed inwards, the internal extracts of which are connected to the periphery of the base d '' shut-off, the arms being spaced apart a distance such that they leave openings that can be passed through the clamping bolts of the flanges, which ensures a precise arrangement of the sealing rings with respect to the flanges *
For the use of the shutters the support with the shutter ring is mounted between the flanges.
The clamping bolts are then introduced into the openings remaining between the support arms and the clamping nuts are put in place and tightened to a degree again determined by the thickness of the support and the spacer discs used, so that the sealing ring is deformed under the pressure of the flanges and thus provides a hermetic seal.
When the support is made of a material which can be removed, for example by combustion or otherwise, after the sealing ring has been tightened, the removal of the support does not damage the sealing ring and when the support is removed by combustion, the temperature required will not be so high as to affect the sealing ring. When a support is made of a non-removable material, for example stainless steel of such thickness. that this support itself acts as a clamping gauge, the fixing of the sealing ring can be carried out temporarily so that the sealing ring is held in position, while the support used cannot however be replaced by a new one.
The description of the appended drawing, given by way of a limiting example, will make it clear how the invention can be rezisé the particularities which emerge both from the text and from

drawing forming, of course, part of the invention.
Fig.l is a plan view of a support provided with a sealing ring in place.
Fig. 2 is a section taken along the plane A-A of fig.l and also shows the fixing brackets.
Fig.3 is a plan view of a closure means with support., Removable material.
In fig.l ', the support 1, provided with radial arms 2, is made of stainless steel and the extracts from the arms 2 are connected to a sealing ring 3, made of gold. The openings 12 remaining between the arms allow the passage of cylinders for the assembly of conjugate flanges (not shown in this figure) on each side of the support.
The section along the plane A-A, shown in fig.2, shows the relative thicknesses making it possible to obtain a good clamping pressure. The support 1 has a thickness 4 less than the thickness 5 of the gold ring 3. The ratio of the thicknesses 4 and 5 is such that after the assembly of the flanges 6, the resulting deformation of the gold ring by the faces of the flanges is limited by the thickness 4 and the degree of tightening is ensured by the thickness 4 of the support.
In fig.3, the support 7 is made of paper and is provided with openings 8 for the passage of the clamping bolts. A gold sealing ring 9 is fixed to the support by suitable adhesive means. To obtain a clamping gauge, spacers 10, made up of steel bands, are arranged on the periphery of the supports. The thickness of the spacers 10 .is such that they act as a clamping stop during the assembly of the flanges.
