Toutefois, lorsqu'on forme
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>

Zimmerman et Lavine, "Industriel Research Service" Dover, N.H. (1953).
<Desc/Clms Page number 11>

"Gelled mineral oil compositions."
The present invention relates to gelled mineral oil compositions and the process for their preparation. More particularly, the present invention relates to a gel consisting of a mineral oil, a crosslinked polymer of acrylic acid, a neutralizing agent based on an aliphatic amine for this polymer, an alcohol having a long carbon chain, as well as a short chain alcohol.
There are many known industrial uses for gelled mineral oils, for example, in printing inks.

EMI2.1
"'1." I ''; r 'cosmetics, pharmaceuticals :, lubricants and compositions for protecting metals, Until now, there is no formula for the preparation of mineral oil gels, - reproducible using synthetic polymeric carboxylic thickeners. Accordingly, the object of the present invention is to provide a stable, homogeneous, transparent 'and smooth' mineral oil gel.
The composition of the present invention is a gel derived from an exceptional mixture comprising, as essential ingredients, (A) 100 parts by weight of mineral oil, (B) 1 to 10 parts by weight of a lightly crosslinked interpolymer of. 'an alpha-, beta-monoolefinic terminally unsaturated monocarboxylic acid of 3 to 4 carbon atoms (e.g. acrylic acid and methacrylic acid) and a polyunsaturated compound copolymerizable therewith acidic and having at least two alkenyl groups, (C) an amine - aliphatic containing a carbon chain having at least 8 carbon atoms, in an amount at least sufficient to substantially neutralize this acidic interpolymer, (D) about 5 to about 100 parts by weight of a saturated aliphatic alcohol of 1 to 2 carbon atoms, for example, methanol,
ethanol or mixtures thereof, this alcohol being the short chain alcohol mentioned in this specification and (E) from about 5 to about 100 parts by weight of at least one aliphatic alcohol whose chain has 4 to 22 atoms carbon, this alcohol being the long chain alcohol mentioned in this specification.
The various gel-forming components are mixed using an ordinary mixing apparatus having a mixing chamber fitted with a low shear or medium shear stirrer.
The acrylic acid polymer, which is a fine powder material, is uniformly dispersed in mineral oil, followed by the addition of the neutralizing amine and then the long chain alcohol. The gel forms when short chain alcohol is added to this mixture.
Preferably, according to the present invention, the gels are prepared at room temperature, although mixing can be facilitated at elevated temperatures, since the viscosity of the mixture decreases as the temperature rises. However, when we train
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
composition at elevated temperatures, care must be taken to prevent loss of volatile alcoholic constituents from the mixing vessel.
In addition to the above essential constituents of the mineral oil gel (these constituents being defined more particularly below), several other materials may be incorporated therein to impart desired characteristics and properties to the product, for example. , perfumes can be added to mask the unpleasant odors of alcohols and long chain amines and to impart a pleasant scent to the gel. Pigments or dyes can easily be incorporated therein to form colored gels.
The "mineral oils" forming the basis of the compositions of the present invention are the oily liquids obtained by the distillation of the petroleum fraction having a boiling point between about 330 and-about 390 ° C. , generally speaking, they are carbonaceous oils insoluble in water, alcohol and glycerin and soluble in ether, chloroform and benzene.
The aforementioned fraction of the petroleum distillate can be subjected to a purification treatment with sulfuric acid and caustic soda, this treatment being followed by filtration through decolorizing carbon, as well as cooling and removing crystalline waxes (solid paraffins) to form refined mineral oils (also known as "liquid petrolatums"), which are colorless, tasteless and almost odorless.
Liquid petrolatum can also be classified by the following designations: "light liquid petrolatum" having a specific gravity of 0.828 to 0.860 and a viscosity at 38 C between about 70 and 110 SU, s (Saybolt Universal seconds) and "petrolatum heavy liquid "having a specific gravity of 0.860 to 0.905 and a viscosity at 38 C between about 230 and 280 SUs Among the commercially available mineral oils; there are, for example, those sold under the brand names "Nujol", "Fractol", "Kaydol", "Drakeol", "Saxol", "Alboline", "Kremol", "Marcol", Wyrol "and many others.
Synthetic resins used as thickening agents
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
in the gels according to the invention are the interpolymers slightly! crosslinked acrylic or methacrylic acid or mixtures of these acids with a poly-unsaturated compound comprising several polymerizable groups terminally unsaturated. These polymeric thickeners are sometimes referred to hereinafter as "acrylic acid polymers" or "acrylic acid interpolymers" for brevity.
They are copolymers of these acrylic acids with a minor amount, for example, about 0.5 to about 2.5% by weight, preferably 0.5 to 2.0% by weight of the poly-non- crosslinking monomer. saturated, this percentage being based on the weight of the copolymer. The copolymerization of the monomers in an inert hydrocarbon diluent is usually carried out using a free radical catalyst. The crosslinked polymers of acryli- acid are recovered from the polymerization media in the form of white powders.
These polymers are high molecular weight resins, eg resins. generally having a molecular weight of greater than about 200,000, preferably greater than about 2,000,000 and usually of about 3,000,000. These polymers of acrylic acid and their sodium, ammonium and amino salts are characterized in that they are insoluble in water and in aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons. However, they are swellable in water and a small amount can thicken the water into a thick mucilage or gel. In addition, the copolymers and their salts are solvent sensitive and can thicken nonpolar solvents under certain conditions, but with relatively less efficiency than in water thickening.
The mid-oil gels. General according to the invention are characterized in that they are practically free of water, since mineral oil and water are generally incompatible.
Among the poly-unsaturated compounds which can be copolymerized with acrylic acid or methacrylic acid in minor amounts to form the lightly crosslinked polymers of acrylic acid. there are, for example, vinyl, allyl and methallyl ethers of polyhydric alcohols having at least 4 carbon atoms and at least 3 alcoholic hydroxyl groups. The pre-
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
Polyalkenyl-polyethers are polyallyl-sucrose and polyallyl-pentaerythritol, advantageously containing, on average, at least 3 allyl groups per molecule of sucrose or pentaerythritol, the allyl groups being attached thereto by means of ether bonds.
The preferred polyallyl sucrose contains, on average, 5-6 allyl groups per sucrose molecule (theoretical maximum: 8 allyl groups) and the preferred polyallyl-pentaerythritol contains 4 allyl ether groups per molecule (theoretical maximum). Copolymers of acrylic acid, in which crosslinking monomers of the above type are employed, are described in U.S. Patent No. 2,798,053.
Among the other poly-unsaturated compounds which may be employed to prepare the additives of the acrylic acid copolymer, there are the polymeric products insoluble in benzene resulting from the polymerization of diolefins, preferably conjugated dienes, this polymerization being catalyzed by Na or K. The chain of these polymers has a very high proportion of structure 1,2 and, consequently, they contain several side groups CH2 = which can be copolymerized with acrylic acids. Interpolymers of acrylic acid containing this type of crosslinking agent are described in United States Patent No. 2,858,281.
Among other crosslinking agents which can be copolymerized with acrylic acid and methacrylic acid are polyallyl- or polyallyl-trimethylene-trisulfones. These monomers are described in United States Patent Nos. 2,535,533 and 2,535,534, while the co- polymers of acrylic acid are described in United States Patent No. 2.9 ± 8,679. Among other crosslinking agents which may be employed in the preparation of acrylic acid copolymers are polyvinyl-, polyallyl- or polymethallyl-silanes or the corresponding tin compounds. In these compounds, the silicon or tin atom is linked to a carbon atom by a covalent bond.
The silicon or tin compound must obviously contain at least two of the aforementioned unsaturated groups. Particularly good crosslinked polymers can be prepared by copolymerizing tetrallyl-silane, tetravinyl-silane, tin-tetrallyl or tin-tetravinyl with acrylic acids. However, we can
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
preparing satisfactory copolymers with tin compounds having two or three of these groups, namely the vinyl $ allyl or methallyl groups. The remainder of the silicon atom or of the tin atom can have any non-toxic group and, in particular, an alkyl group. The acrylic acid copolymers formed. with polyallyl-silane, polyvinyl-silane or tin compounds are described in United States Patent No. 2,985,631.
As other crosslinked polymers of acrylic acid suitable as thickeners for the gels of the present invention, there are copolymers of acrylic or methacrylic acid with small amounts of a polyallyl-phosphate ester as a crosslinking agent. These allyl phosphates correspond to the formula:
EMI6.1
in which R and R1 are independently chosen from the group comprising a hydrogen atom and a methyl radical, while R2 is chosen from the group comprising a hydrogen atom, an allyl radical, a methallyl radical, an alkyl radical , an aralkyl radical, an aryl radical and an alkaryl radical. Of this class of monomers, triallyl phosphate is preferred.
The blends of the present invention contain at least about 1 part of the crosslinked polymer of acrylic acid per 100 parts by weight of mineral oil and there is no practical advantage in increasing the thickening by. using more than about 10 parts resin per 100 parts mineral oil. The preferred range is about 3 to 5 parts of the polymer per 100 parts of oil.
The acrylic acid polymer is uniformly dispersed in the oil, then it is converted into an amino salt by adding, to the mixture,! a saturated or unsaturated aliphatic amine or mixtures of these aliphatic amines, this amine containing at least one carbo- chain. born with at least 8 carbon atoms attached to the nitrogen atom of the amine. Preferably, however, carbon chains of 10 to 22 carbon atoms are employed. Neutralizing agents suitable for
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
Preferred amine-based therefore include primary, secondary and higher tertiary aliphatic amines derived from fatty acids and mixtures thereof (i.e. fatty amines).
A general overview of the fatty acids from which these amines are derived is given in "Encyclopedia of Chemical Technology" by Kirk and Othmer, John Wiley and Sons, Inc., New York, N.Y., Volume 6 (1951), pp. 173-178. Fatty amines are described in detail on pages 127-135 of "Encyclo. Pedia of Chemical Technology", Second Edition, Volume 2 (1963).
Among these amines there are, for example, octylamine, dodecylamine, tetradecylamine, hexadecylamine, octadecylamine, arachnic amine, lauroleic amine, myristoleic amine, palmito amine - leic, oleic amine, erucic amine, linoleic amine, eleostearic amine, linolenic amine, didodecylamine, ditetradecylamine, dioctadecylamine, coconut oil diamine, di- (octadecenyl-octadecadienyl) -amine, 1 trioctylamine, tri-dodecylamine, coconut oil triamine and the like, as well as mixtures thereof. Preferably, primary, secondary and tertiary amines comprising one or more aliphatic chains of 12 to 18 carbon atoms and mixtures thereof are employed.
The amine is mixed with the oil and resin in an amount at least sufficient to substantially neutralize the acrylic acid polymer. This quantity is easily determined by simple calculations comprising the equivalent weights. However, it has been found that by employing an excess of amine, for example about 2 to about 5 times the amount required to neutralize the acrylic acid polymer, clearer gels of higher viscosity are obtained. The preferred ratio is about 2 to 3 equivalents of amine per equivalent of acrylic acid polymer.
The compositions prepared according to the present invention contain, per 100 parts by weight of mineral oil, from about 5 to about
100 parts, preferably about 5 to about 20 parts of a lower saturated aliphatic alcohol selected from the group consisting of methanol, ethanol, and mixtures thereof. It has also been found that the compositions should contain, in admixture, one or more long chain aliphatic alcohols, i.e. alcohols comprising
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
at least 4 carbon atoms. Although alcohols containing up to 22 carbon atoms can be employed, those having 8 to 18; carbon atoms are preferred.
The amount of long chain alcohol! required in the mixtures is between about 5 and about 100 parts, preferably between about 10 and about 40 parts, calculated on 100 parts of mineral oil. Among the alcohols of the category of so-called "long chain" alcohols mentioned above, there are primary, secondary and tertiary saturated alcohols containing at least 4 carbon atoms, such as for example butanols, amyl alcohols. , hexanols, heptanols, octanols, nonyl alcohol, decanol, dodecanol, tetradecanol, cetyl alcohol, octadecanol and the like,
as well as their mixtures as well as the ethylenically unsaturated alcohols comprising at least 4 carbon atoms and 1 to 3 olefinic bonds in the carbon chain, such as, for example, lauroleyl alcohol, myris-tolyl alcohol, palmitoleyl alcohol, oleyl alcohol, erucyl alcohol, linoleyl alcohol, linoleyl alcohol and the like, as well as mixtures thereof.
Stable, homogeneous and smooth mineral oil gels will not be obtained if the multi-alcohol system described above is not employed in the composition of the mixtures. By the term "stable gel" is meant a gel which does not separate into layers of different components which are incorporated therein immediately or even after long periods of storage. Gels prepared according to the present invention are stable for at least six months and very often for an unlimited period. Homogeneous gels can be prepared over a wide range of viscosities, i.e., between fluid gels with a viscosity of about 1000 to 25 centipoise and thick rubbery gels with a viscosity greater than 200,000; centipoise.
The viscosity of the gel is a function of the amount of acrylic acid polymer used, the amount and type of amine, ', -' as well as the long chain alcohol used. As a general rule, the longer the carbon chain of the amine used as a neutralizing agent, the higher the viscosity of the gel obtained.

The mixtures described in the following examples were prepared at room temperature as follows: The acrylic acid polymer powder was dispersed in mineral oil using an air driven propeller stirrer. Then, while stirring continuously, the neutralizing amine was slowly added - / then the long-chain alcohol was added quickly, / then the short-chain alcohol was added thereto and subjected to mixing for a short period of stirring. If the composition met the requirements of the present invention, there was. an increase in viscosity and subsequent gel formation. The viscosity of the products was measured at 25 ° C. using a Brookfield model RVT viscometer.
The amounts of the ingredients specified in the examples are given in parts by weight.
Example 1
In this series of tests, summarized in Table A below, various compositions which do not meet the conditions required for the mixtures falling within the scope of the invention (that is to say as regards the alcoholic components) did not give the desired homogeneous gel of mineral oil. When the word "no gel" appears in the summary of results, it has usually been observed that the acrylic acid polymer precipitates from the mixture of oil and alcohols as a rubbery mass or that in some In this case, a significant thickening of the mixture did not occur.
When the alcoholic component consisted only of methanol, ethanol or isopropanol, no gel formed or there was a slight gel which separated into layers; of a single alcohol containing 4 or 5 carbon atoms simply gave
<Desc / Clms Page number 11>
a slightly thickened mixture or a light non-uniform gel. As shown in the table, different combinations of alcohols which do not meet the requirements of the present invention have also given unsatisfactory results.

Example III
The tests shown in this example illustrate the specificity of the type of amine-based neutralizing agent suitable for the compositions of the present invention.
The mixtures consisted of 100 parts of mineral oil "Kaydol L-1", 5 parts of acrylic acid polymer "Carbopol 940", the specified amine in an amount such that the equivalents ratio of The amine and acrylic acid polymer equivalents are about 2: 1, 20 parts isoctanol and 10 parts methanol. The data are shown in Table C. No satisfactory homogeneous gel formed with either of the mixtures of this example. The mixture of the polymer of acrylic acid and the amino salt precipitated from the mixture of oil and alcohols as a rubbery mass or the polymer appeared as a flocculated mass or else the polymer appeared as a flocculated mass. , a light gel formed which separated into layers.
