<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

Improvements to magnetic brakes for electric motors,
The invention relates to the brakes incorporated in electric motors in order to obtain a reduction in the stopping time of the motors.
Currently there are devices of the brakes incorporated in electric motors with the same purpose, which
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
generally consist of a spring, the expansive force of which acts in the direction of applying an integral disc! to the motor axis and capable of axial displacement against a fixed disc, the spring of which is compressed during operation of the motor by means of the force of attraction opposite to the action of the spring. This force is generated by an electromagnet or by a. suitable configuration of the rotor electrical circuit which determines the formation of the necessary magnetic field.
Also known are friction brakes in which the pressure between the two friction surfaces is created by the attractive force of suitably arranged permanent magnets. The invention is an improvement on said magnetic brakes but it is fundamentally different from those known in that the use of friction discs is not essential for braking to take place because braking is effected by the contacts between two ferromagnetic discoid parts which close the magnetic circuit of the magnets being the completely secondary friction parts. Another characteristic of the invention is that the movable part is a plate made of ferromagnetic material installed so as to allow the graduation of the air gap between the pole piece and the support thereof.
Other features of the invention consist in employing the ring which closes one end of the electrical circuit of the rotor as a generator of magnetic flux antagonistic to the permanent magnets during the starting of the motor and keeps separate the plates which form the movable armature. brake while the engine is running.
Another characteristic of the invention relates to the arrangement of certain ferro-magnetic parts against
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
the front face of the rotor, parts which include the rotor short-circuit ring, placed these parts at least partially in the stator and arranged in an equal number of the grooves of the rotor. By the said parts and the corresponding plate the magnetic circuit antagonist of the permanent magnetic flux is closed, in order to facilitate the more exact interpretation of the object of the invention, a form will be described below with reference to the accompanying drawings. practice of carrying out the invention which should be interpreted only for information.
In the drawing is shown an asynchronous electric motor provided with the brake according to the invention. In the drawing the motor is formed for the most part in its normal construction form, that is to say it comprises an axis 1 installed in a ball bearing 2 and 16 fixed to the supports 3 and 15, the axis which connects at one end the fan 19 placed on the shield 14, closed sidei.ent by the frame 5 to which are fitted the cores of the magnetic plates of the stator 21, with its corresponding coils 4.
The rotor includes the core 6 of the magnetic plates with the corresponding grooves for the passage of longitudinal conductors short-circuited at both ends by the rings 23 and 22, the latter placed in the U-shaped pieces fixed against the part. front of the core with the interposition of an antimagnetic blade 24. Said parts 8 are regularly distributed in an amount equal to the grooves of the rotor. Antimagnetic blade 24 is not absolutely necessary, but its installation in common applications is desirable.
The front face of the rotor is offset inward and is located opposite the face of the magnetic parts of the stator 21, so that the parts 8
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
protrude from said face and form an annular cavity in which the spring 7 is housed, the inner end of which rests against the face of the part 6.
On the segment of the axis comprised between the ring 22 and the ball bearing 16 is installed in a form capable of axial displacement but integral in a rotatable manner with the axis the non-ferromagnetic metal cap 10 which has fixed in its inner end the plate to 11 and in its rear end the plate 9, but this one coupled with threads so that by means of a circular movement it is possible to increase or decrease the separation between the front of the plates 9 and 11 in order to adjust the extreme air gaps.
The support 15 has fixed in its concave part the permanent magnets 13 which can also be of a single piece of annular shape against which the magnets are in time fixed the fixed plate 12 provided with a rim around its entire periphery, this plate placed opposite with the movable plate 11.
The parts 15, 12 and 11 form part of a permanent magnetic circuit which closes by the air gap existing between the said rim and the plate 11. Thanks to this the tendency of the plate 11 is to rest against the said rim and an annular stepping close to the edge of the support plate 15. The concave part of the fixed plate 12 accommodates, although this is not fundamental to the invention, a ring 25 of a material suitable to constitute a friction surface which serves also to cushion lescoups when the plate to the mobile 11 is attracted. Assuming the motor disconnected, the movable assembly is in the position shown in the figure, that is to say attracted by the magnets 13 when the previously said magnet circuit is closed.
If we connect the motor, it
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
a high intensity is established during starting in the rotor which is closed gtdce to rings 22 and 23. The parts 8 placed respectively between two grooves constitute a magnetic armature in which the induced flux is concentrated which by its high intensity closes through of the air gap existing between the ends of said part and the plate 9, determining an attractive force greater than that of the permanent magnets 13.
Thanks to this the movable assembly is separated from the plate 12 to remain placed against the ends of the assembly of parts 8, the rotor rotating freely ,, When the motor reaches its nominal velocity the magnetic field generated by the ring 22 is significantly reduced. because the intensity of the current in this ring 22 is reduced but however the moving assembly remains attracted by the effect of the flux proceeding from the stator conveyed by the partially interior position vis-à-vis the stator of the parts 8.
When the motor is disconnected, the spring 7 which exerts pressure on the assembly capable of displacements in the direction of approaching the fixed plate 12 impels the said mobile assembly to a position in which is attracted by the permanent magnetic field leaning against the edge of said plate 12 and the desired braking effect is obtained. The spring 7 can be omitted in certain cases. For example, with determined on and off cycles, it is possible to reduce the axial movement of the movable assembly to minute values, since it is possible for the disc 11 to rotate in the zone of influence of the magnet. The regulation between the air gap placed between the edge of the plate 12 and the plate 11 is fundamental for the proper functioning of the brake.
For this the said regulation is easy to achieve by moving the plate 9 vis-à-vis
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
of the cap 10 in the aforementioned form and fixing it in the determined position. As an alternative embodiment, the plate 11 or the plate 12 may have a groove or any shape which determines a variation in the intensity of the field including the periphery to obtain a more active braking by the effect of the parasitic current induced by the- movement of the plate during the braking process. Obviously, in the example described, it is possible to introduce a change in the shapes, materials and arrangement of these elements while still remaining within the scope of the present invention.
