Ecran luminescent.
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

Luminescent screen.
The present invention relates to a luminescent screen and luminescent material suitable for use, for example, in cathode ray tubes, gas discharge lamps, x-ray tube screens and lasers.
In many applications, it is desirable to have luminescent materials which transform electromagnetic or particle radiation into visible light. Depending on the application, more importance will be attached to a broad emission spectrum or to an emission spectrum limited to one or more wavelength bands. But in all
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
applications, it is always desirable to obtain a high conversion efficiency. Other requirements which may be made relate to the temperature to which the luminescent material is brought during use and the degree of saturation resulting from an increase in the intensity of the excitation source.
A luminescent screen according to the present invention is characterized in that it comprises a phosphate or borate activated with europium of one or more of the rare metals, lanthanum, gadolinium or yttrium.
Luminescent materials used in a screen according to the invention put red light under the excitation of ultraviolet or particle radiation, for example electron bombardment. Analysis of the emission spectrum shows that this emission of red color consists mainly of a few very narrow bands in three areas of the spectrum, notably between 584 and 596 m between 608 and 615 m and between 620 and 630 m / u. Many luminescent materials that emit red light are already known, but their spectra generally consist of larger bands. In some cases this can be an advantage when delirious Illuminate colored objects with this luminescent light and where one wants to obtain a faithful reproduction of the colors.
In other applications, on the contrary, it is advantageous that the red color emission comes from a few well-determined bands of the spectrum, for example in the case of the screen according to the present invention. A screen according to the present invention may, for example, be used in low pressure mercury vapor discharge lamps intended to produce red radiation. Until now, when it was desired to have such a red radiation lamp, it was necessary to have recourse to the use of filter layers applied to the lamps. Such filters introduce, by their nature, a reduction in intensity of the radiation emitted.
The screens and luminescent materials according to the invention emit only little in other
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
parts of the spectrum, the emission being concentrated in the aforementioned bands. The received excitation energy is used very efficiently for transformation in the form of red radiation.
In the case of cathode ray tubes for color television, a screen according to the invention offers the advantage of having a strong emission on the wavelength of 611 m included in the band from 608 to 615 m, the a color point corresponding to this wavelength coinciding with the internationally determined color point for the red component of a color television picture. As a result, the light output of the material according to the invention is higher than that of most of the red luminescent materials used heretofore, for example cadmium zinc sulfide activated with silver.
The phosphates or borates according to the present invention can also be used favorably in high pressure mercury vapor discharge lamps because these materials can compensate for the lack of red radiation inherent in this type of lamp. Another important advantage is that the red light emission is particularly good from the temperature dependence point of view, in that the efficiency of energy transformations of luminescent materials is only very slightly lower at high temperatures. found in discharge lamps in mercury vapor at high pressure than at room temperature. As is known, luminescent screens can reach temperatures between
3500 C and 6000 C, in the latter application.
It is possible to take advantage of this independence of the materials according to the invention with respect to the temperature to bring the luminescent screen closer to the discharge tube than was hitherto possible. In the case of a conventional construction where the screen is on a bulb surrounding the actual discharge tube, this bulb
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
may have smaller dimensions when applying the present invention. Therefore, a smaller frame can also be used. The independence of the materials of the invention from temperature is also of interest when applying the present invention to cathode ray tubes.
It is in particular possible to greatly increase the intensity of the electron beam which determines, inter alia., - the temperature of the screen.
The borates or phosphates according to the invention also find a very interesting application as laser material, firstly because they exhibit very narrow emission peaks in the red part of the spectrum and also because these materials can be melted relatively. easily and can therefore be easily put into the desired shape.
The use of europium as an activator is known for strontium sulphide or strontium aluminate. However, the technical literature does not indicate that these materials possess the favorable properties of materials according to the present invention.
Although the quantity of europium introduced as activator can vary within wide limits, experience shows that the best quantum yield is obtained when the quantity of europium introduced constitutes from 0.5 to 10 mol% of the quantity of phosphate or borate.
Experience also shows that the proportion of basic oxide relative to the anhydride in phosphates and borates has relatively little influence on the emission, on the conversion yield and on the independence of the gas. emission in relation to temperatures. In general, it is possible to prepare, using boric acid, borates in which the proportion of anhydride to basic oxide is 1, 2 or 3.
Two or three of the rare metals can be combined in the phosphates and borates according to the invention.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
The use of gadolinium oxide in combination with one of the other oxides has the additional advantage that the excitation by short wavelength ultraviolet rays is enhanced. Therefore, phosphates or borates; lanthanum and yttrium with gadolinium have a higher light output than the corresponding phosphates or borates without gadolinium. If only gadolinium oxide is used, the excitation is by nature already maximum.
The preparation of the rare metal phosphates and borates according to the invention can be carried out, for example, by mixing the oxides of the rare metals and of europium or by mixing compositions from which the oxides, for example carbonates, are obtained with the desired amount of ammonium hydrophosphate or boric acid, and heat the whole in an oxidizing, neutral or slightly reducing atmosphere. The heating temperatures can be chosen between 3000 C and 1400 C. The heating time is generally a few hours; it is sometimes advantageous to carry out a heat treatment at low temperature for a few hours first and then to carry out a heat treatment at a considerably higher temperature.
The table given below contains some examples of materials suitable for the aforementioned applications. The table gives, among other things, the proportions of the various oxides, the amount of activator, the preparation process, the light output and the dependence on temperatures. The table also gives the absorption of short-wavelength ultraviolet excitation rays for which the light output was measured. The absorption of ultraviolet rays is measured in a relative manner by giving the value 100 to the ultraviolet absorption
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
of a mixture of a calcium fluorochlorophosphate activated with manganese and atimony and an equal quantity of calcium carbonate.
The last two columns of the table give the light output at 3500 C and 5000 C respectively, compared to the light output at room temperature where we have given the value 100. For comparison, it should be noted that the light output of the red luminescent material commonly used in combination with high pressure mercury vapor discharge lamps, namely magnesium fluorogermanate activa with manganese, is 80% at 3500 C and 30% at 5000 C relative, to the light output of the same material at room temperature.
