<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

electrodes of which use is made in FIG. 1, this electrode having been laid flat, FIG. 4 is a view in elevation la-. side with partial section, of a typical accumulator element comprising the electrode assembly according to the present invention; Figure 5 is a perspective view of a typical apparatus used for preparing portions of the electrode edge for housing current collecting ears.
An excellent example of a type of electrode useful in the practice of the present invention is an electrode consisting of compressed powders of an active material which are carried on a conductive grid such as an expanded metal grid. The present invention relates to the application of electrodes of this type with a view to forming a compact electrode assembly intended primarily for use in alkaline accumulators.
As can be seen in the figures
1, 2 and 3, the set of electrodes designated by the reference 10, comprises a positive electrode 12, a negative electrode 14, a central element 16 forming a core, and separators 18, 20 and 22. A beam
24 of positive current collecting legs is disposed so as to be substantially dianétralement opposite or offset by 180 with respect to the bundle 26 of negative legs, so that all the legs form substantially a straight line.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
As can be seen more clearly in Figure 2, which illustrates the electrode assembly 10 placed inside a vessel 28, the bundles 24 and 26 are arranged in such a manner that when the the assembly 10 is prepared, each bundle of legs is located within a quadrant, these two quadrants being opposite and forming an obtuse angle between them. Beams 24 and 26 do not need to be arranged in a perfectly straight line, but there may be an angle greater than ninety degrees between the radial lines of each beam.
In other words, it is possible that the line of legs of the beam 24 of positive polarity is disposed below the area limited by the angles # as shown in Figure 2 of the drawing.
The zone limited by the angles # also applies, just as well, to the beam 26 of negative polarity. The angle is preferably between
23 degrees and 45 degrees, approximately.
It should be noted that the axis of each leg of each bundle must coincide with the true axis of the legs of the associated bundle. Therefore, when looking from one side of the electrode assembly 10 of Figure 1 at the legs of a bundle, only the outer leg or leg closest to the periphery can be seen. be seen by the eye of the beholder.
However, each leg of each bundle may be allowed to deviate from the straight line formed by the legs by an amount not more than about half the width of one leg. Thanks to this construction, the legs of each beam are in

by the second tab 34 from the left edge of the electrode of Figure 3, are preferably arranged with increasing spacings, so that each tab is in the same quadrant from the top of the assembly d 'wound electrode
10. The negative tabs 34 'of bundle 6 on the negative polarity electrode are disposed along the edge of the electrode such that when the electrode is wound up these tabs 34' are preferably located. opposite to the quadrant mentioned above as containing the legs 34 of positive polarity, which reduces the risk of. short circuit.
As shown in Figure 4, the bundle 26 of negative legs is suitably secured, for example by welding, to an end leg 46 which is welded to the wall of the vessel 28. The bundle 24 of positive legs. is suitably welded to the end tab 48 which is in turn welded to the cap portion 50 of the vessel cover 52. Thanks to this construction, the risk of short circuit is reduced to a minimum and production can be increased to the maximum.
It should be noted that although it is preferred that the two bundles 24 and 26 of legs are at one end of the electrode assembly 10; it is quite possible to have one bundle of legs at the top (positive legs) and have the other bundle of legs (negative legs) arranged at the bottom. In such a construction, the legs can be placed in any way at the top and at the bottom.

rivet of the electrode assembly, the negative tabs being fixed to the bottom of the tank and the positive ones being fixed to the cap portion of the cover.
To prepare both the positive electrodes 12 and the negative electrodes 14, for the assembly of their respective current collecting legs 34 and 34 ', a model is developed at the beginning to determine the places where the legs should be attached to. their respective electrodes and for this purpose, a dummy set of lugless electrodes is made, substantially identical to the set of electrodes shown in FIG. 1. A cut is then made from one end of the end. seems to be electrodes, this cut passing through the center. When this false assembly is unrolled and laid flat, the position of each positive leg and of each negative leg is easily fixed by the parts cut in each electrode.
In order to fabricate an actual electrode, any number of tabs can be suitably attached at marked locations which will have been determined by measuring the distance between one end of the dummy set of electrodes developed to. in the cut place. Of course, the actual number of legs used for a particular accumulator is a function of the current carrying capacity of the electrode being used.
For example each electrode of a standard accumulator of dimensions "C" requires approximately two collecting tabs of taridis current that for a typical accumulator of dimensions "Said it is necessary for each electrode
