<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
'Un broyage tellement fin du mâchefer de haut-fourneau ne -4-
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>

Cements which hold cementing agents or binders are very common today in masonry and finishing doors instead of using pure hydrated lime. Usually, the binder is a mixture of cement and hydrated lime in proportions determined by the mechanical resistance which it is desired to meet with the mortar. In the official Swedish publication
EMI1.2
"Anvisningar till Byggnadestadgan", the mortar is classified according to the cement content in the binder used and four groups or classes designated by A to D.
For class A mortar, the cement content by weight is 90%, for class B, this content is 65%, it is 50% for class C while in class D only lime. The respective binders are mixed in the proportions of 1 part of binder to 4 parts of sand, by volume. The length of time during which a mortar containing cement can be used after its preparation without losing any of its mechanical strength is determined by the setting time of the incorporated cement. For cement of common qualities, the time is very short and generally does not exceed 2 to 4 hours, and once this period has elapsed, the mortar should no longer be used.
Due to this characteristic, it is generally necessary to prepare the ma-

is still in doubt about the quality of the prepared mortar.
For this reason, a binder is sought for a long time for the masonry mortar, as well as for the finishing mortar, which combines the mechanical resistance of binders containing oiment with a sufficiently long setting time to allow the preparation of the mortar. in the factory and not on the site, guaranteeing: ± superior quality

mixtures of top-level clinker, finely ground in a kiln in combination with slaked lime. Such binders are obtained by grinding granulated or crushed blast furnace clinker and hydrated lime with small amounts of setting time substances, for example plaster, in a suitable mill, for example a ball mill or a tube mill. In this process, slaked lime (or calcium hydrate) is added in an amount sufficient to give the mortar prepared with the binder the desired plasticity.
For this purpose, the amount of slaked lime should be about 50% by weight. When clinker from Swedish blast furnaces is used, the calcium oxide content of which is lower than in the corresponding bottom ash obtained in blast furnaces in other countries, a binder is obtained, the use of which gives a mortar with mechanical resistance barely greater than that of a conventional sand and lime mortar.
Even when the binder is prepared from non-Swedish maohefer, which has a higher calcium oxide content, one is forced to add in order to give the desired plasticity to the final mortar for masonry or for finishing, slaked lime in such large quantities that the mortar finally has a resistance

less mechanical than that of the cement and lime mortar with the same lime content, In both cases, the setting time is too short to allow the mortar to be manufactured in specialized factories and not on the site,
The object of the present invention is to produce a binder consisting of a mixture of ground blast furnace bottom ash and slaked lime, especially suitable for being incorporated into masonry and finishing mortars of superior quality,
whose setting time is long enough to allow its manufacture in large quantities at the plant. In this regard, it is proposed to give the binder according to the invention a mechanical strength at least equal to that of a binder consisting of a mixture of equal amounts by weight of slaked lime and cement. This resistance can be considered as the minimum required for a new binder capable of interesting the specialized industry. In other words, the new binder mixed with the sand must give a mortar meeting the requirements of the class.
C according to the above specification.
The invention is based on the discovery that the setting of a binder of the type under consideration depends on a chemical reaction between the blast furnace clinker and the slaked or hydrated lime, and that this reaction is enhanced when the clinker. is ground extremely fine. The grain size of hydrated or slaked lime, expressed according to Blaine as the specific contact area, is at least
12,000 cm2 / g and it has been found desirable to grind. the blast furnace clinker has a particle size which corresponds to a specific contact surface area of at least 4,000 om2 / g, and preferably between 6,000 and 7,000 om2 / g or more.
'Such a fine grinding of the blast furnace clinker does -4-
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
can be carried out as a mixture with slaked lime because the lime particles are not hard and would form a kind of lubricant, so the fine grinding of the clinker should be done in a separate grinding operation * A binder that is obtained by mixing blast furnace bottom ash ground to a state of very fine division with slaked lime gives a mechanical resistance to the mortar which is greater than that of a mortar containing a binder produced by usual methods, that is, that is to say by grinding granulated or crushed blast furnace clinker with slaked lime,
but the increase in resistance thus obtained is not particularly pronounced. In addition, the setting time of the intimately mixed product is only 3 to 4 hours, when measured by the method described in the official Swedish standardization "Muroementnormer" of 1960, and this setting time is much too short for allow the manufacture of mortar in industrial quantities at the plant.
According to the present invention, a very noticeable increase in mechanical strength and a very large prolongation of the setting time have been obtained in a surprisingly simple manner, namely by intimately mixing high-grade chew. finely ground furnace and slaked lime by intense grinding of these ingredients together. This joint grinding can hardly be expected to result in a further reduction in the size of the chewing particles, but it does cause the jaw and slaked lime particles to come into very close contact. intimate, thereby establishing the conditions required for a more intense chemical reaction between particles in the presence of water.
It is even more surprising to note that this joint grinding with lime results in a considerable prolongation of the duration of the setting time. We found that a crushed
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
Combining the constituents which have already been ground separately to the desired fineness, can result in an increase in strength by 50 to 100% and by an extension of the setting time ranging from 300 to 500%, which is more than sufficient to allow the manufacture of masonry and finishing mortar having a storage period long enough for the mortar to be advantageously supplied by a specialized factory.
As is moreover known, it is possible, if necessary, to add to the binder a small quantity of plaster or other sutatants such as to prolong the setting time. The plaster can be advantageously added to the basic constituents at the time of joint grinding and, if desired, with pre-grinding of the plaster.
The advantages of the joint grinding of the puint from the point of view of the mechanical resistance and the setting time of the cementing agent will emerge from the description which follows and from the results of various tests which will also be found below.
A blast furnace clinker from a Swedish iron and steel plant containing about 35% CaO by weight is separately ground to a particle size of, according to Blaine, 6200 cm 2 / g. The grinding energy required for this job is measured in kWh / tonne. This finely divided clinker is uniformly mixed with an equal amount by weight of dry slaked lime having a specific surface area of about 12,500 cm2 / g, as well as with a small amount (about 3 to 5%) of finely slaked plaster. sprayed.
The major part of the mixture thus obtained is subjected to joint grinding in the same grinder as that which was used for the separate grinding of the clinker. For a first charge, this joint grinding is continued until a point at which the energy
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
consumed represents 35% (in kwh / tonne) of the energy that was consumed for the pre-grinding of the clinker; for a second charge, the joint grinding is pushed further, more exactly until consuming an energy representing 65% of that of the preliminary grinding. From the three separate loads of binder a number of samples or test pieces are prepared and tested for compressive strength and bending forces at different ages.
The results of these tests are given in Table I below.

On the other hand, the setting time is measured according to the method described in the aforementioned “Muroementnormer” standardization. The setting time is found as follows Product simply intimately mixed 3 to 4 hours Jointly ground product with 35% energy expenditure 7 to 8 hours Jointly ground product with 65% energy expenditure 10 to 12 hours
It can be seen from these results that, thanks to joint grinding with relatively moderate energy consumption, it is possible to obtain a significant increase in the mechanical resistance of the binder and an extension of its setting time by 10 hours. or more. At the same time, there is a reduction in the setting speed.
It has therefore been found that it is possible in practice to use after 24 hours a mortar whose binder has a setting time, measured as indicated above, of 10 hours, without appreciable loss of mechanical strength. It is therefore possible to prepare a motrier during one day with the binder of the present invention and to use it only the next day, without compromising its mechanical resistance, by spoiling the mortar at the time of use with the quantity of water required to achieve desired consistency.
Thus, the binder according to the invention is perfectly suitable for the manufacture of mortar in the factory or in a central installation for mixing mortar, by eliminating the practical difficulties which one encountered in bringing the mortar from a centralized installation, in thus increasing the safety concerning the quality of the mortar used on the site.
In cases where the mortar must be prepared on the site due to the fact that no specialized factory exists in the region, the use of the binder according to the invention makes it possible to increase the safety ooncerning the quality of the mortar,
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
because it becomes possible to manufacture larger quantities at the same time, and in addition, the mortar not used the same day of its preparation can be used the next day without fear of a lowering of the resistance of the masonry *
The working characteristics of a mortar prepared with the binder of the invention will be particularly appreciated by experienced masons and bricklayers.
Skilled masons were given the opportunity to experiment with the masonry mortar and finishing mortar containing the binder according to the invention, and they unanimously expressed the opinion that working with these new products was much superior to that obtained with an ordinary lime and oiment mortar. Even a comparison with pure sand and lime mortar brings out the advantages of the new binder, because in plastering work, from the point of view of labor, the surfaces obtained have a better finished with pure sand and lime mortar. Thanks to the setting time, which is much longer than that of mortars containing cement, it becomes possible to seriously speed up manual work.
Thus, for plastering operations, the various stages can follow one another without interruption because one is no longer obliged to constantly time as one does in plastering using fast-setting mortars containing cement, finishing mortars with quick setting or casts.
Although the binder according to the invention is especially suitable for masonry mortars and plastering, its use also lends itself to other applications in batten. For example, it can be used as a binder for building stones and slabs, as a binder in wood wool insulation boards and similar products, such as bloos, slabs and other building elements.
<Desc / Clms Page number 10>
tion reinforced with organic or mineral fibers. In addition, the binder can be used for soil stabilization, in which case the longer setting solves a large number of practical problems.
The relative amount of slaked lime in the binder can vary between wide limits. The factors determining this amount are, first, the chemical composition of the blast furnace clinker used, and second, the particle size of the finely divided clinker and the desired mechanical strength. As a general rule, the binder should contain at least 10% and at most 70% slaked lime, by weight. An excess of lime in the production of masonry and finishing mortars confers, as has already been said, increased malleability or plasticity of the mortar, but in return reduces its mechanical strength. If Swedish blast furnace clinker is used, optimum strength is obtained with a binder containing about 25% by weight lime.
If excess lime is to be incorporated to increase the malleability or plasticity of the mortar, the finely divided blast furnace clinker can be ground with a portion of the total amount of lime and the remainder added. lime when preparing the mortar. A safer dosage, however, is obtained if the entire amount of lime is incorporated into the binder, and then grinding this product together with the blast furnace clinker which has previously been finely ground.
To better illustrate the advantageous characteristics of the new binder, a certain number of practical tests will be described below,
In order to practically demonstrate the possibility of using a mortar containing the binder according to the invention
<Desc / Clms Page number 11>
for long periods, that is to say the possibility of preparing the mortar in advance, the following series of tests is carried out. A certain quantity of mortar is produced in the morning of the first day. Immediately a series of brick columns were constructed having a base of 25 x 25 µm and a height of about 1 m, and other columns of the same dimensions, respectively 2 hours and 5 hours after the mortar preparation.
The mortar is left to stand overnight and is wasted on the morning of the second day. A new series of brick columns is built on the morning of the second day and at noon, 10 p.m. and 26 p.m. respectively, after preparation. mortar. After 7 days and 28 days, the columns are subjected to compression tests.

It appears from these results that the possible useful life, that is to say the time during which the mortar can be used without compromising the subsequent strength, exceeds 24 hours.
When plastering or carrying out finishing operations using a mortar containing the binder according to the invention, the dull mortar can be spoiled during the third.

A similar series of tests were carried out at the Swedish National Physics Laboratory, and the results will be given later in the specification of the resistors.
The binder according to the invention gives the mortar obtained a mechanical resistance which conforms, and beyond, to the requirements of class B and C mortars in the aforementioned official publication "Anvisningar till Byggnadsstangen" on page 75, table 16: 1 (the name of this official publication is frequently abbreviated to: "BABS"). The mechanical resistance of the mortar is measured: (1) as the resistance of the brick columns built, by comparison with the mortar according to BABS, and (2) by testing the mortar on all aspects according to the standards set out in the official publication. "Muroementnormerna" from 1960. In Tables III and IV below, the results of these tests have been recorded.
The bricks used were 3 solid bricks with a mechanical strength of about 300 kp / cm2, determined according to the official standards for "Murtegelnormer" bricks, 1955 (Sweden).
