<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
Malgré leum qualités, ces résines présentent cependant les trois défauts suivants ;
1*) adhérence médiocre sur les conducteurs métal- liques
2 vitesse de polymérisation faible et, par conséquent prix du produit fabriqué élevé;
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
Résine téréphtalate : - résine à base de téréphtalate mixée diol-triol; modifiée par 8 % de tétraoctyltitanate et par 17 % de "Desmodur CT précité;

Polyester resin-based insulation for electrical conductors,
The conductors intended for the manufacture of electrical windings are composed of a metal core (copper, aluminum, silver-plated copper, etc.) covered with an insulating material. This was formerly made up of an impregnated textile fiber. For a long time now, these fragile and heterogeneous coatings have been replaced by homogeneous coatings consisting of insulating resins, endowed with the necessary mechanical properties of hardness and flexibility and exhibiting economic advantages over the anoiens processes.
So we used initially natural resins, then synthetic resins; these resins have physicochemical characteristics which depend on their
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
nature and methods of implementation. The most widely used synthetic roots were for a long time that based on aceto-formal-polyvinyl modified by a phenoplast resin which had satisfactory qualities.
In the production of extensive electrical equipment with significant internal heating, the use of this resin which does not withstand high temperatures has proved impossible. In fact, the shots coated with polyvinylaceto-formal can only be used up to 115 ° C. Resins which withstand higher temperatures have therefore been sought. The development of polyesters based on mixed terephthalate diol-triol has given enameled conductors withstanding a temperature above 155 ° C. in continuous operation.
These resins and their use are described in French patent No. 1 143 047 filed on September 13, 1955 by the applicant company under the title: "Polyester resins and their application to the insulation of electrical conductors
Despite their qualities, however, these resins have the following three defects;
1 *) poor adhesion to metal conductors
2 low polymerization rate and therefore high price of the manufactured product;
3 *) low resistance to thermal shock, resulting in the fact that thermal stress succeeding mechanical stress causes cracks in the resin covering the conductor.
So for example, a copper wire of
0.80 mm having a total diameter of 0.865 mm with an insulator, exhibits cracks if placed, after being wound on a mandrel having twice the diameter of the wire, in an oven and if exposed to it, for an hour, at a temperature of 175 C.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
To deposit insulating resins on the electrical conductors, they are used, either in solution in mixtures of phenolic compounds and various hydrocarbons, or in dispersion in a gas (fluidization) or in a liquid (aqueous dispersion), The metallic conductor passes continuously through a container containing the resin and is then led through a calibration device which leaves on the metal a liquid coating having a thickness which may range, depending on the dimensions of the conductor, of a few microns. to several tens of microns.
The wire then passes through a heated chamber where the solvents and diluents are eliminated and, where the resins are polymerized, a series of successive passages allows the conductor to be coated with the desired thickness,
In accordance with the aforementioned French patent, the polymerization of the resin during passage through the heated enclosure is accelerated by a catalyst; the latter generally consists of an organic salt of zinc, cadmium, etc., or of organic compounds such as aromatic polyisocyanates. Unfortunately, these products have the drawback of not giving in a regular manner. binds smooth coatings.
This is the case, for example, when zino otoate is used at 0.3% to 1.5% of the dry matter, or polyisooyanate (under the name "Desmodur CT ", manufactured by Bayer) at a dose of 0.3 to 1.5%. The thermal shock resistance of these con. ductility is poor and polymerization rates low.
This can be seen in example A of the table below

in accordance with the invention, The use of organic titanium compounds, such as tetrabuty1titanate or tetraoctyltitanato, eg, between 5 and 10% by weight of resin, greatly facilitates the application and improves somewhat resistance to thermal shock (Examples B and C of the table), but the polymerization rate is not improved. It is necessary, to accelerate the polymerization, to use large doses of polyisocyanate of the order of 10 to 20% The rate of 17% relative to the dry matter allows a
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
significant improvement in speed; it also has a beneficial effect on thermal shock (examples E and 7 in the table).
Despite these additions, the thermal shock resistance of the wires insulated by this process still leaves much to be desired.
This is why we had the idea and this is the object of the invention, to use, in addition, a surface coating overcoming the drawbacks mentioned above.
In order to better understand the technical characteristics of the invention and its advantages, a certain number of exemplary embodiments thereof will be described, it being understood that these are in no way limiting as regards the mode of implementation. of the invention or its applications,
The invention makes it possible to produce an insulated wire characterized both by good resistance to thermal shock, by a high rate of polymerization of its insulation and by an excellent surface condition.
It has in fact been found that the simultaneous use of large amounts of polyisooyanate and tetracotyltitanate gives varnishes of easy application, which can be used equally well on threads of circular cross section (with a diameter ranging from 0.05 mm up to several millimeters) than on wires of rectangular section (example F in the table).
Conductors according to the present invention have improved characteristics. In the single figure, the conductor 1 is covered with a resin 2, the main characteristic of which is to polymerize rapidly without causing processing difficulties, and with a thermoplastic resin 3 which gives good resistance to thermal shock. The last resin is much less thick than
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
terephthalic resin can constitute less than 30% of the total thickness of the insulating layer.
For this purpose, a thermoplastic resin is advantageously used which does not contain an aromatic nucleus, such as that belonging to the group of superpolyamides and in particular 6-il superpolyamides, or better still, 6-6 superpolyamides commonly discontinued under the name nylon (example 0 of the table ).
The thickness of the thermoplastic coating should not be too great so as not to reduce the thermal stability of the insulation produced. In practice, the terephthalic resin should constitute more than 70% of the insulation. The varying thicknesses of terephthalic and thermoplastic resin are obtained by varying the number of layers of each resin, the concentration and viscosity thereof, and the size of the coating deposited.
To illustrate the practical application of the present invention, three examples are given here relating to the manufacture of enamelled conductors with formed cores of copper or of metals other than copper.
Example # 1,
An enamelled conductor is made by passing a wire of ouivre of diameter 0.80 mm on a maohine to be enameled.
Two varnishes are applied successively consisting of terephthalate resin and thermoplastic resin which respectively have the following characteristics:
Terephthalate resin: - resin based on mixed terephthalate diol-triol; modified by 8% of tetraoctyltitanate and by 17% of "Desmodur CT mentioned above;

The 0.80 mm wire receives four layers of terephthalate resin, resulting in an outside diameter of 0.845 mm, then two layers of thermoplastic resin, resulting in a final diameter of 0.868. After each layer, the wire passes, at the speed of 28 m / minute, in an oven 8 meters high where the resins are polymerized at a temperature of 380 C. The enamelled wire obtained, lengthened by 25% and wound on a mandrel having its diameter, is brought to 175 c for one hour; the insulation does not show any cracks or cracks.
Example # 2.
