<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
1
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

-Device for checking the string tension of tennis rackets and the like ".
It is useful to have an apparatus which enables the tension of the stringing of tennis rackets or the like to be checked quickly and with good precision, either to check the regularity of the tension of strings executed mechanically and in series, or to check the loss. possible tension / strings after a certain time of use of rackets or after storage of these.
The invention relates to a device of this type, which enables the checking of the overall tension of the string of rackets and the like to be carried out easily and quickly.
To this end, the invention provides a device comprising essentially.a comparator fixed to a part of the frame of
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
the apparatus, this part also carrying a cuvette open downwards, into which can penetrate the rod of the comparator, a bloo with a smooth upper surface and muai., in the center of its lower face, a stud having a slightly diameter smaller than the normal spacing between the strings of a racket, this bloo having a shape corresponding to that of the said bowl, so that when the bloo is engaged in it, the rod of the comparator is practically opposite from the center of said bloo,
a nut or the like intended to be engaged on said titan after having passed the latter through the string in the center of the racket, a support for this frame, this support being mounted on said frame, means for retaining said frame on said frame support after having engaged in said bowl said block already attached to the rope to be checked, said de @@ u or the like being provided with a fastener on which a constant and slow-acting tensile force will act, this force being advantageously produced by a weight the descent of which is braked by a hydraulic shock absorber, the dial of said comparator being provided with a graduation indicating the tension of the rope according to the displacement that the rod of the comparator will have undergone when said force becomes equal to the resistance of the rope,
especially when said weight has deformed the rope until it reaches a position of equilibrium.
Other features and advantages will emerge from the description of an exemplary embodiment of the device according to the invention, which will be given below with reference to the appended schematic drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary elevational view, partially in vertical section, of a device according to the invention, and
Figure 2 is a plan view of the essential part of this device.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
The frame of the machine comprises, in the example illustrated, two columns 1 which support a cross member 2 on which is fixed a comparator designated as a whole by the reference 3. This comparator mainly comprises a movable rod 4 whose movements are transmitted, for example by means of a pinion and rack linkage, to a needle 5 moving in front of a dial 6 with adjustable angular position. This comparator is provided with a tubular projection 7 which serves as a guide & the rod 4 and this flxed to the cross member of the support 2, for example by engaging the tubular projection 7 in a sleeve 8 fixed to the cross member and extending to the- below the latter, by a bowl 9 open at the bottom.
In the example illustrated, the sleeve 8 passes through a hole provided in the cross member and is fixed to the latter by means of a nut 10 which engages an external thread of the sleeve. The comparator is immobilized in the sleeve 8 by a clamping screw 11 passing through the latter and. acting on the tubular projection 7.
The frame 12 of the racket, the string of which must be checked, placed on supports mounted on the frame of the machine, these supports being for example each constituted by a plate 13 articulated at the end of a rod 14 telescoping in a tube 15 secured to said frame and therefore to the columns 1, a powerful spring pushing the rod 14 upwards. With each plate 13 cooperates a hook 16 terminating a rod 17 articulated to the corresponding tube 15. The frame 12 will for example be immobilized by four hooks 16.
For clarity of the drawing, the rope 18 to be checked is shown schematically by a single rope in FIG. 1.
In the center of the rope 18 is placed a cylindrical block 19 whose diameter corresponds to a few spacings of the ropes, so that its lower face covers a central area of the
1
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
rope which is large enough so that the force exerted by said block on the rope, perpendicular to its plane, constitutes a measure of the tension of the rope. For a tennis racket, the diameter of the block 19 will advantageously be about three centimeters, which corresponds approximately to the strike zone of a tennis ball.
The block 19 has, in the center of its lower face, a stud 20 which is passed through the central mesh of the rope and which serves as an element for applying the downward tensile force on the rope. As shown in Fig. 1, this stud is threaded and cooperates with a nut 21 carrying an eyelet 22 intended to engage a hook 23 integral with a weight 24 serving to create said tensile force. This weight is arranged in a guide cylinder 25 forming part of a hydraulic damper braking the movement of the weight 24 downwards, but allowing its rapid ascent.
To check the tension of the rope 18, one operates as follows. The block 19 is fixed in the center of the rope by means of the nut 21 and the block 19 is engaged in the bowl 9 so that the axis of the block is at the center of the curette 9 and practically coincides with the axis of rod 4. This blocking of the block is easily effected by giving the bowl 9 a cross section in the shape of a U with a semi-circular base and practically the same diameter as said block 19, so that it suffices to engage this laterally in the bowl until it comes into contact with the para: thereof.
During this interlocking of the members 9 and 19, the rod 4 is lifted, so that the racket can be moved in a horizontal plane a little higher than that shown in FIG. and that the frame 12 can be easily placed on the plates
13, the hooks 16 being released. Then just place. these hooks on the frame to immobilize it.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
The rod 4 is then lowered to support its lower end, generally bearing a ball, on the block 19, and the dial 6 is turned so as to bring the zero of the scale in front of the needle 5. We then make act the weight 24 by hooking the hook 23 to the eyelet 22, so that the weight will exert a traction on the rope and will cause a deformation of the latter, this deformation being a measure of the tension of the rope, which is directly indicated by needle 5 of the comparator. The graduation of the scale of dial 6 can be established empirically by testing the device with snowshoe strings, the tension of which is known with precision.
It will be understood that the size of the weight 24 and its hydraulic braking must be such that the traction applied by the weight on the rope is not sudden and is very progressive, in order to avoid measurement errors which could result from the inherent elasticity strings, which varies for strings of a different nature, even of identical tension. The weight 24 will therefore be relatively low, for example around 4 kg. for tennis rackets, the string of which generally presents a tension of the order of a good twenty kg. The rate of descent of the weight 24 should be practically constant, which is ensured by the hydraulic shock absorber. For snowshoes of different shape or nature, it will suffice to establish corresponding graduations on the scale of the dial 6.
The practical conditions of the tension test can be carried out practically in such a way that the stroke of the weight 24 will be barely of the order of magnitude of a millimeter, which can correspond to at least one revolution of the needle 5. , so that the measurement can be done with good precision. @

It goes without saying that the invention is not limited to the example described and illustrated, to which various modifications can be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
