<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 7>

<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
d'autres moyens.
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>
<Desc/Clms Page number 11>
<Desc/Clms Page number 12>
EMI12.1
, du tube,, est in s;1. cr 1 fian te \ , mist ,l,Qrae-!i diam.
<Desc/Clms Page number 13>

The present invention relates to a method and apparatus for shaping plastics and, more particularly, it relates to methods and apparatus for shaping plastics into continuous tubes without using extrusion methods and apparatus.
With the advent of various plastics, it has been recognized that it is advantageous to give some of these materials various forms for many different uses. For example, in certain cases, certain "Method and apparatus for manufacturing plastic tubes" can be conformed.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
of these materials to make pipes which are used to conduct corrosive fluids which have an adverse effect on the substances previously used to make pipes. Further, it has been recognized that tubes and similar plastic articles have advantages in certain situations which require a winding driving path or where weight can be a problem.
Although the plastic tubo has been widely adopted in many industries, it is nevertheless subject to certain limitations which have restricted its use in certain circumstances.
For example, although the flexibility of the plastic tube is sometimes an advantage, in other situations where external crushing stresses may be exerted on the tube, such flexibility is a limitation. well-defined job.
It would of course be possible to increase the rigidity of the plastic to some extent to obviate the limitation set out above.
There are many good plastics

In the hole 26 is fixed a mandrel 28 having an axial duct. 22 which communicates with the interior of the tube subjected to the extrusion. A duct 31, perpendicular to the duct 29, communicating with the latter, is also formed in the body 24 and does not tarnish on the outer surface of the latter. These two conduits 29 and 31 cooperate to form the vent 15 shown in Figure 1,
A heating element 32 is in contact with body 24 to maintain it at a temperature equal to or greater than the softening point of the material from which tube 12 is formed.
The calibration sleeve 14 is connected to a wider plate 33, which may be integrally with the sleeve, and which has a thicker part 34 provided with a recess 36 in which
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
the projection 27 is applied in a manner that is relatively gas-tight. In front of the plate 33, the sizing bush 14 is provided with means for equalizing the pressures on its internal and external surfaces. In the present embodiment, these means are shown as a number of radial holes 37 which pass through the sleeve and communicate with a number of annular grooves 38 made in the interior surface of the sleeve.
As shown in Figure 3, each of the barley 38 lies in a plane substantially perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the sleeve 14. It will be understood that other groove arrangements can be employed. For example, a single helical groove might be found to be satisfactory if dictated by equipment design criteria.
Returning to FIG. 2, it can be seen that the sleeve 14 passes through an opening 39 made in a wall 41 of a chamber.
16, and extends into the interior of this room.
A sealing device such as an anrular seal
42 is employed to maintain a fluid tight seal between plate 33 and wall 41.
The cooling chamber 16 comprises the wall 41, a parallel wall 43 spaced therefrom, a cover 44 spaced from said walls by a seal 46, and a bottom plate 47 provided with an orifice 48 which communicates with a gasket. source of coolant 19. Similarly, cover 44 is provided with an orifice. 49 to allow communication
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
nication between the vacuum source 17 and the interior of the boiler 16. The refrigerant, which is preferably water, is directed onto the tube 12 as the latter emerges from the sleeve 14, by a number of nozzles 51 which receive the coolant from a manifold generally designated 52.
The refrigerant thus supplied is withdrawn from chamber 16 by pump 18 through the practical port 53 in wall 43.
In an alternative arrangement (not shown), port 49 is omitted and the coolant outlet port is connected to a positive displacement turbine, or high flow pump. In such an arrangement, the pump or impeller maintains both a vacuum within chamber 16 and the desired refrigerant level.
The outlet opening 54 of the tube made in the wall 43 is surrounded by a device for wiping the coolant which, in the embodiment shown, comprises an elastic disc, flexible hat-shaped 56, having an opening central circular 57 of a diameter -sensibly less than the diameter of the tube 12. The disc 56 is held in place by fixing means generally indicated by 58, and it is flexible enough to form a tight seal around the tube 12 when the pressure inside the tank drops below atmospheric pressure while allowing the tube to be pulled by rollers 21 and 22 (fig. 1), or by
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
other ways.
In an assembly process of the structure shown in Figure 2, a device, not shown, is actuated to bring the water 27, on the body 24 into firm contact with the recess.
36 corresponding to the socket 14. The refrigerant is then injected into the chamber 16 until it reaches a level just below the orifice.
53. A sufficient quantity of tube is then produced by extrusion and cooled until the first extract of the tube produced by extrusion can be inserted between the rollers 21 and 22.
After the snorkel has been thus inserted, the cover is placed in the position shown in FIG. 2, the injection of refrigerant is restarted and the canker 16 is evacuated through port 49.
When the refrigerant reaches the desired final level shown in figure 2, refrigerant is started to be withdrawn and the injection and extraction of the refrigerant is adjusted to maintain it at a constant level in the chamber. cooling.
The extrusion process is then continued as desired.
When it enters the calibration sleeve 14, the tube 12 is still in a heat-rolled state and would crash if there was no interior support present. However, when applying the present invention, the interior of the tube is in communication with the atmosphere and there is a partial vacuum on the outer wall of the tube. A sufficient pressure difference is thus obtained
<Desc / Clms Page number 10>
to hold the heat-bonded plastic against the cool inner wall of the sizing sleeve 14, until the outer surface of the tube has cooled to form a solidified outer skin 59 of relatively hard plastic.
The cooled skin is strong enough to resist the difference in pressure when the tube leaves the socket 14.
At the same time, any gas which might be between the inner wall of the calibration sleeve 14 and the outer surface of the tube 12, usually due to leaks between the projection 27 and the recess 36, escapes from the inside of the tube. room 16 by the gorgea 38 and the holes 37.
The escapement opposes the possibility of the tube breaking as it leaves the socket 14, which might otherwise occur in the absence of formation in the air entrained area of a solidified skin 59 ..
Under ordinary operating conditions, the temperature of the refrigerant is not critical. In general, the softening temperature of the material subjected to the extrusion varies from 121 C to 315 C. In any case, the temperature of the refrigerant must be about 5 to 110 C below the temperature. softening of the plastic. It will be emphasized, however, that this temperature difference is not critical and that, if the conditions so require, a larger or smaller temperature difference can be employed, affecting the product excessively.

The differential pressure applied to the tube produced by extrusion by means of the vacuum device is also not critical. In general, this differential pressure should be enough Brande to ensure close contact between the heated plastic and the inside of the calibration socket 14, and, at the same time, it should not be large enough to cause rupture of the tube when it leaves the calibration sleeve.
A satisfactory differential pressure depends on many factors, including the depth of the coolant, the temperature difference between the coolant and the softening point of the plastic being extruded, the length of the sleeve -Sizing, and the wall thickness of the tube produced by extrusion. However, under all circumstances the differential pressure can vary within wide limits. Usually a differential pressure of 70 to 350 grams per cm3 of absolute pressure is well within any critical limits, and values outside this range can be expected to give good results. if the circumstances give the values blue.
When operating this apparatus, one can adjust the thickness of the walls of the tube produced by extrusion, by acting on the relative speed of exit of the tube from the extrusion head, by means of the rollers 21. and 22. In general, the faster the tube exits relative to the

extrusion rate, the thinner the walls.
Likewise, the output of the tube can, if desired, be slowed down to such an extent that the resulting product takes the form of a cylindrical bar full of plastics.
± Since this was a common technique for adjusting tube thickness, the particular speed ratios required for a given tube wall thickness, can be determined for any particular piece of equipment by a specialist. one skilled in employing the obvious expedient of trying various speed ratios and observing the corresponding wall thickness.
Usually, when producing tubes with this apparatus not exceeding about 100 mm in diameter, the differential hydrostatic pressure between the upper surface and the lower surface

This is especially true when producing relatively thin walled tubes. However, such measures

Corrective measures do not involve fundamental changes in the equipment, but can instead be achieved by adjusting the operating conditions of the equipment.
For example, one possibility is to simultaneously increase the vacuum in chamber 16 and decrease the temperature.

coolant temperature. One procedure ensures that the hydrostatic pressure at the bottom of the gauge socket 14 is not large enough to overcome the pressure differential between atmospheric pressure and the external pressure exerted by the vacuum on the undersurface of the cylinder. tube.
In short, the lowering of the temperature of the coolant acts to increase the thickness of the solidified skin formed inside the calibration sleeve to allow greater differential pressures on either side. of the tube produced by extrusion as it leaves the calibration sleeve. This is just one method by which any small problem resulting from differential hydrostatic pressure can be solved. Specialists readily find other methods without having to resort to the exercise of their inventive powers.
Of course, the invention is not limited to the operating mode and to the embodiments of the apparatus described and shown and to which various codifications can be made without departing from the scope of the invention.
