<Desc/Clms Page number 10>

The conductor wires 14 and 18 are inserted through the tube 12. The conductor 18 is preferably provided with an e-mail coating, to prevent shorting between the wires. In the event that they should fail. touching each other in assembly When the conductors 14 and 18 are not constituted by tapes, the ends 16 and 20 are flattened and joined by a metallurgical process at the free ends of the strands 22 and 24 .
The combustion retarders 30 and 32 are then force-fitted through the inner end of the tube 12, until they occupy the position shown in FIG. 1. Combustion retarders 30 and 32 are located approximately one inch from the adjacent end of tube 12.
The lower end of the wires 14 and 18 is then pulled until the hot solder 26 occupies the position shown in Fig 1. In this position, the free ends of the tube 28 are at the other end. below the upper end of the tube 12. Cement 34 is then poured over the combustion retarders 30, until the latter completely fills the. upper end of tube 12.
The cement 34 is made up of a pre-teronce by a siccative ceramic cement, capable of constituting a rigid support for the free ends of the tube 28 and agitating

cylindrical 42, thus slightly deforming the latter, at the place where it is in abutment contact with the conductor 14. The contact element 54 simultaneously comes into contact with the wall 44, thus slightly deforming this last where it is in contact with the conductor 18.
The tube 70 is then rotated relative to the tube 76 and to the pipe 62, in order to remove by friction the protective enamel which covers the conductors 14 and 18, and thus to ensure good electrical contact. The above operations automatically result in establishing a polarized connection between the conductors 14 and 10, on the one hand, and the conductors 56 and 60, on the other hand.
Therefore, there is no need to take care when assembling the lance 10 to the pipe 62 and when handling the lance during playback. Until now, we were obliged to take these precautions, because the previous constructions did not allow to establish a polarized connection purmotting a rotational movement. Rotary motion is the inevitable result of inversion of the lance in a molten bath and of its movement therein. It follows from the foregoing that, in order to take a temperature reading using the lance according to the invention, it is not necessary to refer to qualified personnel.
When the lance 10 is immersed in a molten bath, a recording is made in accordance with common practice, which indicates the temperature of the molten bath. During this recording, a significant part of the upper end of the lance 10, Fig. 1, is consumed by the molten pool. The stopper 74, the tube 28, the cement mass 34 and the combustion retarder 30 ensure that the lance 10 does not burn too quickly. If necessary, plug 74 can be omitted.
After a reading has been taken, the remainder of lance 10 is removed and discarded, thus leaving hose 62, lance holder 61, and contact holder. 52, When a new measurement has to be made, -

removably attaches a new lance to the pipe 62, in the manner described above. In this way, the calibration of the thermooouple after each reading, which was standard practice to this day, is now eliminated. Likewise, the removal and replacement of burnt parts of a permanent lance is also eliminated.
Thus, the lance 10 according to the present invention reduces the time required to take a reading, can withstand rough handling by inexperienced personnel, and eliminates coupling problems, which exist in the absence of a coupler. not polarized. The flexibility of the contact carrier 36 allows a small angular displacement between the pipe 62 and the tube 12.
Such angular displacement is due to the movement of the lance 10 in the molten pool. Due to the length at which the lau @@ 10 is immersed in the molten bath, a slight angular shift inevitably occurs between the tube 12 and the tube 62, from @ @@ @@ @@ @@ @@@ this, has caused problems as regards concerns the maintenance of electrical contact between the recorder and the conductors.
The present invention may be carried out in other particular forms without departing from the spirit of the invention or the essential features thereof.
