<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

"Method and apparatus for effecting smokeless combustion of oily and lean bituminous coal"
The present invention relates to a method and apparatus for effecting the smokeless combustion of oily and lean bituminous coal and is particularly, although not exclusively, applicable.
the combustion of this coal from a domestic central heating boiler *
The present invention proposes to carry out this combustion in a domestic boiler without requiring a mechanical arrangement for loading the fuel and without requiring that the size and the quality of the fuel be specified with precision *
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
According to one aspect of the invention, it provides a process for the smokeless combustion of fatty coal and lean bituminous coal / in which the coal is admitted by gravity through a cooled passage in a combustion zone,
and air is admitted into the passage and the combustion chamber so as to form a carbonization zone above the combustion zone.
In another aspect, the invention provides an apparatus for effecting the smokeless combustion of fatty and lean bituminous coals, which comprises a means for admitting the coal by gravity through a passage through a duct for the flow of oil. a cooling vent and in a region below said passage intended to constitute a combustion zone, and means for admitting air into said passage and the region arranged so that in operation a gas is formed. carbonization zone above the combustion zone and that the carbonization products descend into the combustion zone.
By "carbonization" is meant a heat treatment of the coal at a temperature high enough to evaporate the volatiles forming the smoke, and at a temperature above that at which a plastic zone exists in the coal, without that any significant combustion occurs.
This effect occurs in the carbonization zone.
By "combustion" sone is meant the sound system in which the main combustion occurs.
The heat of carbonization is conveniently provided by combustion produced by 5 to 15% of the total air used for fuel combustion.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
which is injected at the junction between the water-cooled tube and the extension lined with a refractory material,
This flow of air favors the formation of a carbonization layer extending to the level of said junction against the downward flow of the compound. The injected air also promotes the free flow of the coke formed by burning its outer surface and releasing it from a contact with the refractory material ** The carbonization products then flow through the combustion zone and promote combustion. smoke jump, At idle speed, that is to say at low boiler flow rates,
the fire is maintained in the continuation of the refractory material, reducing the generation of smoke at these flow rates.
Coke from the mud from the refractory-lined inlet tube extension. the coke being in the form of a billet, is advantageously burned in a combustion chamber located below. This chamber may be lined with a refraotary material and may include a grid at its base. An air ring may be arranged to blow air over the coke billet 4 at its point of exit from the refractory-lined extension of the charging tube.
This air burns the volatiles exiting the feed tube and also burns and breaks up the coke billet to a limited extent. The air can also be conveniently admitted through the air. grate to burn off the lower part of the ooke billet as well as the bed of loose coke particles that have become detached from the billet during combustion. The ratio of air intake from above and air intake below the grille is advantageous.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
It is proportioned so that there is always a complete coke bed and that the small coke fragments do not burn in preference to the ooke billet.
The air can be admitted through a third air ring provided at the top of the combustion chamber lined with refractory material to complete the combustion of the gases leaving this chamber.
A particular embodiment of the invention will now be described, given by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which FIG. 1 shows schematically a vertical section of a heating boiler. domestic central heating constructed according to the present invention 1 and FIG. 2 shows in vertical section a construction variant.
Referring first to Figure 1, bituminous coal is stored in hopper A and flows downward into a water-cooled inlet or feed tube B, which has a circled cross section. - circular and which is sufficiently wide to allow the free flow of the partial dimension of the compound used. At the base of this water-cooled part, which is wider at the base than at the top, is an air injection assembly in the form of a D-ring through which 5 to 15% of the air passes. total air admitted into the boiler.
Coking and some degree of fogging occurs below this level in an extension C lined with refractory material from charging tube B. The air from ring D serves to ensure that it does not produce a free flow in the lined extension of refractory material by combustion
