<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

Multiple electric shredder.
The invention relates to a miniature multiple electrical limiter, and more particularly to an electrical limiter intended to be used in protection against overvoltages, in current limiter in lightning arresters, in protection of rectifiers, in protection of magnetrons, in limiter. high currents for discharge capacitors, as a limiter for relay circuits, as protection against overvoltages for cables * etc ..
Skimmers are already old in the art and are in common use. However they are complicated, bulky, expensive, and are specialized. They are considerably affected by local conditions and do not have a constant arc overvoltage * In addition they have only a short useful life and are not capable of cutting extra currents created by the equipment associated with them.

The invention relates to a multiple skimmer *
The invention relates to a multiple skimmer comprising a conductor with a helical electrode of diameter decreasing in one direction, a cylindrical electrode near and around the helical electrode, a third electrode near and outside the electrode. cylindrical, and a coil around the cylindrical electrode connected to the cylindrical electrode and to said third electrode, which is functionally grounded.
The invention will be described with reference to the following figs, given by way of non-limiting examples! - figure 1, an overall perspective

of the clipper - Figure 2, an axial section along the plane 11-11 of Figure 1; - Figure 3, a cross section along the line 111-111 of Figure 2; - figure 4, the schematic diagram of the use of the shipper,
These figures show a shield with two helical spark gaps * Oven for many uses, only one helical spark gap is needed. Unnecessary one can be left on standby as a spare or can be removed entirely.
As two helical spark gaps are necessary for certain uses, for example for cables with balanced pairs, we will describe here a skimmer with two helical spark gaps, it being understood that in many applications a single helical spark gap will be used,

The references 10 and 11 are applied to two metal rods aligned axially but held apart from each other by an insulating connection 12.
The rods 10 and 11 are electrodes and constitute conductors. On and around the internal part of the rod 10, and close to the connection 12, is an electrode 13 in the form of a helical metal rib, the diameter of which decreases as it approaches the connection 12. On and around the internal part and near the connection 12, is an electrode 15 in the form of a helical metal rib, the diameter of which decreases as it approaches the connection 12. Each of these helical ribs may be an integral part of the rod which it encloses. Each rod is surrounded, towards its external part, by an insulating disc 16 or 17. These discs 16 and 17 are preferably made of glass, in order to allow visual monitoring of the state of the helical electrodes 13 and 15.
A cylindrical housing 19 is mounted on the discs 16 and 17. In the cylindrical housing 19 and against its inner wall is placed a coil 20 which receives the coil 21. Inside the coil 20 is a cylinder 22 of insulating material such as compound. filling. A metallic cylindrical electrode 23 is fixed against the inner wall of the cylinder 22. This cylindrical electrode 23 is near and around the two helical electrodes 13 and 15, thus leaving two spaces forming spark gaps 25 and 26; spark gap 25 is located between helical electrode 13 and cylindrical electrode 23, and spark gap 26 is located between helical electrode 15 and cylindrical electrode 23.
A flank of
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
the coil 20 extends inwards but leaving a third space forming a spark gap 27 with respect to the cylindrical electrode 23. The coil 20 is an electrode of conductive material and it is held in a central position in the device by two rings insulating 29 and 30. Two other insulating rings 31 and 32 surround the rods 10 and 11 to hold and center the helical electrodes 13 and 15 in the correct position relative to the cylinder electrode. drique 23.
FIG. 4 is the functional diagram of the apparatus. A conductor 33 connects one output of the coil 21 to the cylindrical electrode 23, and a conductor 35 connects the other output of the coil to the ground 36. The conductor 35 and the ground 36 are connected to the coil 20 and thus go to a point. spark gap terminal 27.
In order to use only one helical electrode, it is possible to remove either the helical electrode 13 or the helical electrode 15, as well as the rod 10 or 11 which is connected to it. Alternatively, one can simply use one of the rods, for example rod 10 and connect the associated equipment to both the inner and outer ends of rod 10. If necessary, rod 11 can be used.
When a single helical electrode is used, there are only two spark gaps in service, namely the spark gap between this helical electrode and cylinder 23, and spark gap 27 between cylinder 23 and coil 20,
As already stated, the miniature multiple clerk can be used in many different applications. In operation, a constant current in the winding 21 creates a magnetic field
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
in the spark gaps, which causes the arcs in the helical spark gaps to rotate in the same direction regardless of the direction of this current.
The helical spark gap 25 and the helical spark gap 26 cause the arc to rotate downward and away from the ignition point which minimizes possible damage to the ignition points of spark gaps 25 and 26. The arc will continue to rotate towards the lower points of the helicoids until the current ceases or the voltage across the device drops below a critical value. This critical voltage increases with the lengthening of the arc as it rotates downward from the helical spark gaps. The arc in the spark gap 27 also rotates between the end of the coil 20 and the cylindrical electrode 23, but without moving helically. The rotation of the arcs in the different spark gaps prevents the arcs from significantly eroding the different electrodes.
Moving the arc through spark gap 25 and spark gap 26 away from the point of initiation allows the arc initiation voltage to remain substantially constant. The spark gap 27 however has no effect on the initial starting voltage since it is shunted by the coil 21.
When the arc in the spark gap 25 or in the spark gap 26 lengthens while rotating, it requires more energy from the power source for its maintenance. This condition allows the device to extinguish the arc which may persist under the normal voltage of the equipment connected to the device after the voltage peak has disappeared.
If desired, the apparatus can be used in conjunction with an impedance which limits the peak current through the equipment which is thus protected. The device can cooperate with a capacitance,
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
or an inductor, or a resistor, or any combination of these elementary circuits. The impedance can be placed externally to the device, or internally by lengthening the outer casing of the device.
From what has been stated, it is clear that when the current peak enters through the input end of the helical electrode, it arcs between that location of the helical electrode which is near l cylindrical electrode and cylindrical electrode.
At the same time an arc occurs between the cylindrical electrode and the fixed metal electrode which is connected to earth or to some return circuit. The voltage across the stationary spark gap 27 produces a constant current in the winding, because the intrinsic characteristic of such a spark gap is a constant voltage over the duration of the arc. .
