<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>

<Desc/Clms Page number 10>

Treatment of particulate solids.
The present invention relates to an improved apparatus and method for grinding particulate solids in liquids. By “grinding” is meant here both the crushing of the solid material to reduce its particle size and the dispersion of this material in a liquid not accompanied by a reduction in its particle size.
It is known to grind patioular solids, particularly finely divided solids, for example pigment particles, in liquids in which these solids are stirred in the presence of a liquid and a conditioning agent. particulate grinding (which can serve as a grinding agent). This process is hereinafter referred to as "sand grinding".
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
Sand grinding has been used to decrease particle size, disperse solids in liquids and, in the case of pigments, improve their coloring power. One case in which sand grinding can be used for three different purposes is that of titanium dioxide pigment where the process can be used to reduce pigment particles and / or improve their coloring power and / or disperse. the pigment in a paint vehicle.
A disadvantage of existing sand grinding methods is the excessive residence time of the solids to be ground in the apparatus to achieve sufficient grinding or dispersion for solids. This excessive residence time seriously limits production in the mill to the stable.
It is an object of the present invention to provide an improved apparatus and method for sand grinding in which the residence time in the grinder, necessary to obtain the desired result, can be relatively short.
However, the present invention resides in a sand grinding apparatus comprising a container and a shaft rotating in the container, the shaft carrying a plurality of agitators spaced apart longitudinally in the container, an end baffle being provided and extending towards it. inside from the inner wall of the container between the agitators so that the inner edge of the baffle and the outer edges of the agitators overlap with the baffle extending uninterrupted or substantially uninterrupted all around the inner wall of the container .
The container is preferably a substantially cylindrical container open at one end and having an orifice at its opposite end. In the preferred apparatus the container is open above and the shaft extends downward from a drive mechanism and passes through the open top of the container.
The liquid and the solids to be ground are then introduced usually in the form of a magma into the apparatus through the orifice provided at the lower end of the container and are withdrawn by its end.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
By crying out, the shaft may extend upwardly through the formed lower end of the container for example by passing through a seal such as a mechanical seal. preferred container is a container comprising an upper part and a lower part,
the lower part coitusing said cylinder and having an open end on which is mounted the upper part which extends the lower part and which has non-inclining walls outwards to form a hollow cent inversa trunk. Such a container allows the particulate grinding agent (for example particles or beads of silica, zircon, alumina, titanium dioxide, glass or ceramic) which is in the chamber during the grinding. sand, to settle preferentially and to return to the lower part of the container as the ground solid-liquid magma rises in the upper part of the container.
In such vessels, liquid and ground solids can be drawn off as magma from the top of the upper part of the apparatus and, as noted above, the grinding agent. The particulate is selectively deposited and returns to the lower part of the container to be used for grinding new amounts of pigment *
If desired, the upper part of the container can be a cylindrical extension of its lower part, of the same diameter.
Another form of container which can be used is a container having an inlet port at one end and an outlet lumen at the other end, provided with a mesh or the like filter for selectively retaining the grinding agent in the container. container while allowing liquid and crushed solids to exit the container. When this container form is used, the pigment and liquid agent (e.g. water), may, if desired, be introduced separately or in the form
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
magma from the upper end of the container and be discharged after crushing through the bottom of the container where the filter retains the grinding agent.
If desired, a grinding apparatus in which the materials are introduced from the top of the container can be used in series with another grinding apparatus in which the materials are introduced from the bottom *
The shaft carrying the agitators is advantageously a cylindrical shaft capable of being driven by an electric motor.
The agitators which are normally rigidly fixed to the shaft and rotate with the latter may be solid or hollow discs with a diameter smaller than the internal diameter of the container in which they rotate; annular spoked stirrers can also be used. The stirrers can have protrusions on their upper and / or lower faces, if desired. They can be about 0.1 to 6 inches (2.5 to 152mm) thick, preferably 1 to 3 inches (25 to 76mm) thick.
The diameter of the agitators is preferably such that there is a gap of about 0.1 to 6 inches (2.5 to 152 mm), more preferably at least about 1 inch (25 mm), between the inner wall of the container and the periphery of the agitators. It is preferable that at least two agitators are attached to the shaft in the container, but any number can be used, for example up to 12. A convenient spacing of the agitators along the shaft is between 1 and 10. inches (2.5 and 25 cm) between two adjacent agitators, although this distance can be increased or decreased, if desired.
It is preferable to position the baffles so that a baffle extends between each pair of adjacent agitators. For this purpose, the container can be formed of sucoesive elements and annular discs can be bolted or otherwise clamped between
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
the elements such that the inner edge of each annular disc extends between the agitators,
In the case of large machines, however, it has been found to be advantageous to use a container composed of vertical elements bolted or otherwise assembled.
Such a container in which baffles are welded or otherwise fixed between the elements makes assembly of the apparatus easier since the vertical elements of the container must simply be pulled into place and secured in such a way that the baffles extend between the agitators which are already mounted on the tree *
The width of the baffle which extends into the container must be greater than the distance separating the periphery of the agitator from the inner wall of the container,
which ensures that the inner edge of the baffle extends inwardly beyond the periphery of the agitator into the space between the top and bottom faces of two adjacent agitators * It has been found that It is advantageous to provide baffles which extend inwardly from the inner wall of the container over a distance of approximately up to twice that which separates the periphery of the agitator from the inner wall of the container, but this distar it can be higher, if desired.
The calmer of the baffles must obviously lift such that an interval exists between the upper and interior faces * of adjacent agitators and the upper and lower faces of the baffle located between these agitators to allow the magma contained in the container to pass freely. between the baffles and the rotating agitators in the space between two adjacent agitators.
It has been found that it is advantageous to give the baffles a section such that the sharp angles between the upper and lower faces of the baffles and the inner wall of the container are! removed and replaced by a well rounded curve. Baffles in this section prevent pigment or solid grinding agent
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
Do not accumulate in the angles between the baffles and the wall of the container.
The inner edge of the baffles can, and is desired, be serrated or crenellated. The indentations or crenellations can be formed other than in the plane of the corresponding baffle so as to affect the direction of flow of the material which crosses the edge of the baffle.
The agitators and baffles should normally be of a material resistant to the abrasive action of the particulate solids in the container. The agitators can be coated or made of polyurethane rubber and, if desired, the baffles can also be coated or made of this material. Polyurethane rubber is abrasion resistant and does not tend to color code crushed solids. The latter quality is particularly useful when the ground solid is a pigment because it is very desirable to avoid any change in color of the pigment.
The apparatus according to the present invention makes it possible to increase the efficiency of grinding with sand and to greatly reduce the residence time necessary to obtain a given result. A notable increase in the coloring power is therefore obtained in the grinding of a dioxide pigment. of titanium in water or other. liquid agents or a satisfactory dispersion of the solid material in a liquid, in a much shorter time than that necessary in the absence of the baffle (s) of the invention. The invention therefore significantly increases the amount of solid material which can be ground in a given lapse of time in an apparatus of given dimensions, for example in some cases the yield of the ground pigment can be doubled.
One reason for this increase in efficiency appears to be that in the absence of the baffles of the invention, a significant proportion of the solid material to be ground passes into the container between the inner wall and the periphery of the agitators without passing through the space.
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
separating the top and bottom faces of adjacent agitators, where the grinding action is maximum. To achieve this increased efficiency, it is essential that the inner edge of the baffles and the outer edge of the agitators overlap.
Consequently, in the absence of the baffles of the invention, the solid material to be ground must be retained in the apparatus for a sufficient period of time to ensure that the solid material which initially escapes the action of the agitators is returned. circulating around the container until it is subjected to the action of the agitators,
In addition, the proportion of static area to moving surfaces (i.e. agitators and shaft) increases in the vessel when equipped with the baffles according to the present invention, further delaying the turning movement flooding the contents in the container and consequently increases the efficiency of the grinding.
The solid grinding agent can include particles * of silica, zirconia, alumina, titanium dioxide, glass or ceramic. The particle size of this grinding agent can vary depending on whether it is desired to crush or disperse the ground solid material, but an average size graded in the range of about 76 to 3000 microns, preferably 250 to 2500 microns and in particular 400 to. 600 microns is generally suitable.
A method for using the apparatus of the present invention will now be described *
A charge of grinding agent is introduced into the actual pient and the agitators are rotated at high speed, for example in the range of 2000 to 4000 feet (600 to 1200 m) per minute, mined at the periphery of the 'stirrer. The solid material to be ground as well as a liquid are then continuously introduced into the receptacle - preferably through an inlet port provided in the bottom of the receptacle, provided with a flexible tent retaining valve, for example of the Perreaux type. .
Solid matter and liquid rise in the
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
vessel above the baffle (s) and are therefore directed between the upper and lower surfaces of adjacent agitators where the solid material is subjected, in the presence of a grinding agent, to the grinding action induced by the rotational agitators - tits.
When the pigment-liquid magma containing the grinding agent arrives at the top of the container, the grinding agent can be selectively retained by a filter which allows the crushed solid-liquid magma to pass through or the mixture can pass through a settling zone, for example an upper part of the container of the inverted trunk type or a cylindrical extension of the lower part of the container described above, into which the grinding agent is deposited in a preferred manner - rential and returns to the lower part of the container.
If we. If desired, water or other liquid can be added to the upper part of the vessel to dilute the magma present at this right and thus facilitate the selective settling of the grinding agent.
The best results can be obtained when the lower part of the vessel, where the grinding takes place, is filled with grinding agent before the start of operations. The apparatus is preferably filled, before the operation, with grinding agent up to the beginning of the frustoconical upper part of the container, when such a frustoconical upper part is to be used. The operation of the agitators can lift the mass of grinding agent to some extent.
If the material is a pigment to be dispersed in a liquid, the liquid of the magma is the liquid in which the pigment is to be dispersed, for example a vehicle for a paint.
The invention is illustrated by the accompanying destiny which is a vertical section of a preferred grinding apparatus.
The container of the apparatus is formed by a lower cylindrical part 1 and an upper part in the form of an inverted truncated cone 2 which extends the inner part 1. The lower part 1 to 10 inches (25 cm) in diameter and 24 inches (61 cm) high. The upper part 2 therefore also has 10 inches.
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
these (25 cc) in diameter at its lower end and 48 inches (122 nn) in diameter at its upper end 4. Its height is 16 inches (41 cm).
The container is open at its upper part 4; an evening. fice 5 is provided at its inner part and is connected to a supply duct 6 provided with a rubber slot retaining wuvette 7 of the Perreaux type. An overflow gutter 8 comprising a discharge pipe 9 encircles the upper end 4 of the container *
A shaft 10 extends downward along the vertical axis of the lower and upper parts 1 and 2. The shaft 10 comprises five agitator discs 11 mounted concentrically and capable of rotating with the shaft. These discs are 8 inches (20 cc) in diameter and 3/4 inch (1.9 mm) thick.
The agitator discs 11 are spaced 4 inches (10 cm) from each other by tube spacers 12 and the lower disc 11 is supported by a nut 13. The part of the shaft 10 located in the upper part 2 is. surrounded by a loose sleeve 14 carrying four vertical fins * 15. The fins are not rotated by the Nais shaft serve to minimize or prevent vortex formation in the upper part 2.
A baffle in the form of an annular disc 16 extends inwardly from the wall of the lower part 1 between each pair of adjacent agitators 11. Each annular disc 16 is mounted between two cylindrical elements 17 forming the lower part. - higher 1 and is held in place by bolts 18 passing through the annular disc as well as external projections 19 of the cylindrical elements. 17.
Each 16 annular disc is 3/16 of an inch (4.8 mm) thick (when, as in this case, mild steel) and extends inwards a distance of 2 inches (5 cm) from the wall of the lower part 1. (The thickness of the annular discs may be greater especially if these discs are made of another material, for example polyurethane),
<Desc / Clms Page number 10>
In the operation of the apparatus, a charge of grinding agent such as sand or glass beads is placed in the lower part of the container 1 and the shaft 10 is rotated at about 1400 rpm.
A magma of the solid material to be ground, for example an aqueous magma of titanium dioxide pigment, is then introduced through the feed port 5. As the magma rises along the sloping sides of the upper part. - re of the container 2, the grinding agent is deposited in a preferential manner and returns in the lower part of the container 1. The remaining solid-liquid magma rises over the edge of the upper part of the container 4 and settles in the overflow gutter 8 from where it is discharged through the pipes 9. If desired, additional water can be discharged into the upper part of the container 2 to aid in the preferential settling of the water. grinding agent.
The check valve 7 allows the magma to pass through the inlet 5 in the lower part 1 but if the inflow of magma decreases or ceases, the check valve 7 closes and prevents the magma containing the magma. grinding agent returning from feed port 5 to feed line 6.
EXAMPLE 1 -
The device used is similar to that described above,
A load of 200 pounds (91 kg) of sodium hydroxide glass particles having a particle size between 0.4 and 0.6 mm is placed * in the lower part of the vessel 1 and the stirrers 11 are rotated at 1400 revolutions / minute.
On magma of titanium dioxide having a concentration of
600 g per liter is introduced through the feed port 5 at a rate of 0.08 µ / hour which gives an average residence time in the lower part of the container of 9 minutes. The material discharged through the pipes 9 has a coloring power (estimated on the scale
Reynold) from 1790.
For comparative purposes, the baffles 16 are removed from the device and an aqueous titanium dioxide magma containing.

ing the Berne pigment at the same concentration as in the example through the supply port 5. It is found that a feed rate of 0.045 m3 / hour is necessary to give the material a coloring power. evacuated by pipes 9, from 1730 only.
This feed rate means that the residence time is 16 minutes instead of the 9 minutes in the example. If a feed rate as high as in the example is used (0.08 m3 / hour, i.e. a residence time of 9 minutes), the coloring power of the discharged material falls to 1675.
