<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

A method of molding high molecular weight polyethylene and molded articles obtained by this method.
The present invention relates to a method for molding high molecular weight polyethylene as well as to the molded objects obtained by this method.
Very high molecular weight polyethylene, for example greater than 106, has remarkable mechanical properties, in particular exceptional impact resistance. However, the transformation of this polyethylene by the usual extrusion or injection molding techniques is practically impossible because of its melt viscosity which is very high. On the other hand, the molding of this material by compression is possible but is little used because of the length of the heating and cooling cycles of the molds.
Various methods have already been proposed to improve this compression molding technique in order to make it more suitable for the use of this type of material.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
Thus, it has already been suggested to press mold, 'OR, a. pressure of the order of 500 to 1000 Kgr / cm2 and at ambient temperature, the preforms, which are then heated without pressure and then transferred from a hot mold, or they are compressed * and cooled This hot mold can be maintained at a temperature below the melting point of polyethylene, for example at 75 ° C., throughout the duration of the compression and the part can be demolded at this temperature.
It will be appreciated that such a technique makes it possible to shorten the molding cycle, since the heating of the preforms is carried out outside the mold and the latter can be maintained at a constant temperature. However, this method still has certain drawbacks. Thus, it requires the immobilization of two presses, one of which must be able to exert considerable pressure. In addition, compared to the molding time, the time required for heating the preforms is quite long since it is of the order of 30 minutes.
Another technique consists of preplasticizing the polyethylene by heating it for 10 to 30 minutes, at a temperature above 180 ° C., in a powerful jacketed kneader. The preplasticized material is then transferred into a mold maintained between 180 and 200 C where it is compressed at 100 Kgr / cm2 for 15 to 30 minutes, then cooled for 1 hour under a pressure of 200 to 250 Kgr / cm.
This process also has certain drawbacks. It involves in particular a pressing cycle lasting a minimum of 1 hour 15 minutes, not taking into account the time necessary to heat the mold before the next molding cycle. The one hour cooling can probably be shortened when molding small parts, but the hot pressing time cannot be changed because of the extremely high viscosity of the melt. Indeed, the preplasticized state of the material introduced into the mold implies the need to subject it to significant shear forces which would generate internal stresses if the duration
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
of hot pressing was not long enough.
The Applicant has now developed a new process for molding high molecular weight polyethylene which no longer exhibits the aforementioned drawbacks and which also makes it possible to obtain molded articles of very good quality.
In accordance with the process forming the subject of the invention, the polyethylene is preheated in the pulverulent state before being tram; .. féré in the shaping molds. During this preheating, the resin is brought to a temperature slightly above its crystalline melting point (130 to 135 ° C.). Furthermore, it has also been found that it is advantageous to maintain the molds at a temperature slightly below the crystalline melting point of polyethylene.
Finally, agglomeration of the polymer particles is avoided during preheating by subjecting these particles to continual stirring during preheating. This preheating can, in particular, be carried out in a fluidized bed or by continuous passage through a rotary kiln.
The Applicant has, moreover, found that the high denity polyethylenes produced by suspension processes have the party. characteristic of being in the form of a fine and regular powder which is particularly suitable for carrying out the process according to the invention,
The method according to the invention therefore comprises the following operations; - Preheating, for example in a fluidized bed or in a rotary oven, of the polyethylene to a temperature above 130-135 ° C. so as to make the product amorphous.
- transfer of the hot powder into a mold maintained at a temperature of the order of 120-130 C, temperature at which crystallization of the polyethylene is rapid - compression of the powder in the mold for a sufficient time so that the crystallization of the polyethylene is complete
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
demolding of the shaped object without cooling the mold, and cooling of this object outside the mold.
Besides that it is characterized by a very short molding cycle owing to the fact that the preheating is very rapid and that the molds are maintained at constant temperature, the method according to the invention has other not insignificant advantages.
Thus, since most of the crystallization, hence shrinkage, occurs when the material is compressed in the mold, it follows that the dimensional accuracy of the molded objects is very good.
In addition, since the material undergoes practically no shearing forces during its molding, the parts obtained are practically free from internal stresses and their dimensional stability is therefore excellent.
The process according to the invention is illustrated by the examples of practical implementation given below. However, it is understood that these examples in no way limit the invention because it is susceptible of variants which do not go beyond its scope or its spirit.
