<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
Cette enveloppe a de préférence un profil poly- gênais par exemple trapézoïdal, la grande base reposant sur le fond..;;
'
Suivant une autre caractéristique de l'invention, l'extrados présente une certaine rugosité créant une prétur- bulence tendant à déplacer vers l'amont le point de décollement des filets liquides et, par suite, à diminuer les dépressions ;
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

"proceeded to reduce the action of the transverse currents on a pipe or a group of submerged pipes and device for the implementation of this method."
The invention relates to underwater pipes liable to be subjected to the action of transverse currents and more particularly to pipes laid on the bottom of the sea, of a river or even of a lake.
The forces which act on a submerged pipe of any fora, placed on the bottom and subjected to the action of a transverse current, exert, on the pipe, on the one hand, a sliding force on the bottom and, on the other hand, an effort of reversal known as of "cabanement". In fact, the hydrodynamic forces can be reduced to a vertical force or "lift" generally acting in the opposite direction of the weight and to a horizontal force or "drag" which tends to make the pipe slide in the direction of the current if the
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
The current is strong enough and depending on the weight of the pipe, it can slip or pry.
The present invention relates to a method intended to modify the forces acting on an immersed pipe subjected to transverse currents with a view to reducing or even eliminating the risks of slipping or shifting,
The process according to the invention is remarkable in particular in that the external shape of the pipe or pipes is modified by placing the pipe or pipes inside a protective casing having a certain rigidity,
and a geometric shape chosen so as to give it a profile having a lift and / or a drag that is as low as possible $ and that action is taken on the state of the outer surface of this envelope so as to modify the state of the pressures external on this envelope in a direction tending to reduce the lift.
The subject of the invention is also a protective envelope for implementing the method defined above and making it possible in particular to ensure the modification of the state of the pressures in the direction indicated above, said envelope being remarkable in particular in terms of that it comprises one or more vents making communicate the upper surface and the lower surface of the casing in order to reduce the pressure gradient existing between these two surfaces *
This envelope preferably has a Polygenese profile, for example trapezoidal, the large base resting on the bottom.
'
According to another characteristic of the invention, the upper surface has a certain roughness creating a pretur- bulence tending to move upstream the point of separation of the liquid threads and, consequently, to reduce the depressions;
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
on the portion of the upper surface located downstream of the separation point.
The stability of the assembly can be improved by adding, on the underside of the casing resting on the bottom, steps and / or protrusions tending to! -. fishing or reducing any slipping on the bottom,
The advantage of the vents according to the invention is to reduce the uplift pressures in all cases where oelles-oi may appear such as; pipe more or less inclined transversely on the seabed, formation of foxes upstream under the effect of erosion; start of abanement, etc ...
Tests have shown that the maximum speed of the current causing the shearing could, in this way, be increased by at least 30%. The dimensions and location of the vents are determined taking into account the construction requirements of the whole of the pipe (s) and of the casing, 'In the case of two pipes enclosed side by side in the same casing , the vents will advantageously be provided in the interval between the two pipes. The general shape of the vents has an influence on their efficiency. This is how their ends can be flared.
The roughness sought according to the invention for certain portions of the upper surface of the casing can be obtained by various means, for example a metal mesh, bars or plates suitably welded to the surface and more generally any other devices. creating turbulence,
Other features of the invention appa. will be missed in the description which follows, with reference to the accompanying drawing, showing an exemplary embodiment of the invention and in which

Fig.1 is a schematic cross-sectional view showing two submarine pipes surrounded by a casing, the whole resting on the seabed, for example, and - Pig.2 is a schematic top view of 'a portion of the envelope,
According to the exemplary embodiment shown, two pipes 1a, 1b are arranged inside a protective envelope 2 of particular shape, with the interposition of a suitable filling material 3.
The profile of the envelope
2 has the general shape of a trapezoid with the large base or intrados 4 which rests on the seabed. not shown - comprises a central portion 4a set back with respect to the two lateral portions 4b, 4c serving as supports and provided with projections or hinds 5. The upper surface of the casing is ('}, roughened at the means of a strip 6 of metal mesh which covers the small base and the upper portion of the sides of the trapezoidal profile.
Ducts or vents 7 arranged between the two pipes 1a, 1b communicate, according to the invention, the intrados and the extrados of the protective casing,
These different arrangements give great stability to the entire duct and casing under the action of transverse currents such as F.
The invention is not limited to the embodiment described and shown which was chosen only as an example. In particular, it applies to the case where the installation is reduced to a only pipe which would not, strictly speaking, be enclosed in a protective envelope but which would have the external characteristics in accordance with the invention.
