;" DISPOSITIF DE RETENUE ELASTIQUE D'ARTICULA.- TIONS SPHERIQUES ".-
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

; "ELASTIC RETAINING DEVICE FOR SPHERICAL JOINTS" .-
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
The present invention relates to a device for resiliently retaining spherical joints for connecting rod mechanisms, in particular for windscreen wipers used on board vehicles.
In the particular, but not exclusive, case of connecting rod mechanisms for wiping devices where the invention finds an advantageous application, it is necessary to insert a spherical articulation between the connecting rod and the oscillation pivot. of the balance, when the axis of this pivot is oblique * Simpler types of articulations are made up of a flexible member interposed between the connecting rod and the pivot of the balance.
However, these joints have a limited duration. and can only be used for tilting on the axis at 50 * When the angles of tilt on the axis exceed this limit value, ball joints must be used to allow correct operation of the wiper. known sphericals have elastic means for recovering or compensating for the play which forms between the ball head and its seat and also for obtaining, with rough mechanical work, perfect functioning of the joint without play and without beating, * * if this joint undergoes notable forces,
likely to vary continuously *
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
This is the case with the connecting rods of panoramic window wipers which work on curved surfaces and which usually have two oscillating pivots for their arms. The axes of these pivota have a considerable angle of inclination so that the arms can follow the curvature of the ice, which angle reaches and exceeds some times the value of 16
The object of the present invention is to provide an articulation of the type described, suitable for allowing considerable angles of inclination, allowing, in particular, to take up the play which forms between the spherical head and its seat, even when this play is important*
The device according to the present invention,
applicable to spherical articulations constituted by a spherical head drilled axially and the seat of which is constituted by two complementary parts joined together, is characterized in that at least one of said parts is complementarily constituted by a plate provided with at least one appendage, the end of which is fixed to the other part to tighten and resiliently retain said spherical head.
According to the invention, the appendage of the plate comprises at least one transverse fold to ensure its elastic action.
It is understood that the present invention also covers the spherical joint comprising the device in question.
The present invention will be explained in the following description which refers to the appended drawing in which - Figure 1 shows in perspective view the end of the connecting rod, the spherical articulation of which is produced according to the present invention; - Figure 2 is a section of this joint, and - Figure 3 is a plan of this joint *
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
The connecting rod 10 is made of stamped sheet metal and has towards its end a hemispherical seat 12 which serves as a housing for a spherical head 14 pierced with a diametral hole 16 suitable for receiving the pivot of a crank not shown on the figure.
At the edge of the hole 16, the spherical head 14 has a flattened part 18 perpendicular to the axis of said hole and which can be provided at both ends of the hole 16 and not only at one end, as shown in FIG. 2. In this figure , the head 14 has, at the other end of the hole 16, a collar 20 of suitable size, the periphery of which is intended to cooperate with the edge 22 of the hole drilled in the hemispherical seat.
The purpose of the collar 20 is to limit the oscillation or pivoting of the connecting rod 10 and this when the joint requires a limitation of the angle of oscillation considered. Obviously, as has already been said, the collar 20 can be formed at both ends of the hole 16.
In its middle part, the spherical head 14 has a cylindrical strip 24 which facilitates the operation of said head.
A profiled plate 26 has in its central part a hemispherical projection 28 cooperating with the surface of the spherical head 14 to retain the latter with elasticity and cane play at the end of the connecting rod 10.
According to the present invention, the resilient action of the plate 26 is achieved by providing one end of the plate with an appendage 30 having one or more corrugations 32. The appendage 30 is drilled and rivets 34 secure it to the connecting rod 10.
At the other end of the plate 26m, other rivets 36 are provided to complete its attachment to said connecting rod 10, These rivets 36 could possibly be omitted, while
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
that the plate 26 could have, near the end, folded legs.
or others = yen cooperating with the side tacts of the connecting rod 10,
The corrugations 32 could be located one to the right and the other to the left of the spherical seat but always due to a position between the rivets 34 or 36 and the spherical seat 28.
From the above it obviously follows that the corrugations 32 only make the plate 26 flexible with elasticity only in a direction perpendicular to the direction @ the force transmitted by the connecting rod 10. Thus the spherical head 14 can move. freely in its seat without moving the center of oscillation of the spheres and that without play and without noisy laths under the alternating forces produced slanting normal operation.
In addition to the variants provided for in the preceding description, other variants may be envisaged without departing from the aim of the present embodiment and therefore without departing from the scope of the present invention. For example, the connecting rod 10 could have two opposite plates 26 suitable for retaining the spherical head 14,
