<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>

Improvements to nuclear reactor core structures. ,
The present invention relates to core structures! Nuclear reactors of the kind comprising a group of series of prismatic blocks of moderator material arranged end to end, usually vertically or horizontally! at least certain series of blocks comprising passages which pass right through them and which are in line to form channels intended to receive fuel elements.
Because of this unitary nature of the core structure, a rubbing device must be provided to stabilize it.
In one type of shrinking device, the peripheral blocks of the core are connected to a surrounding support structure, the core by retaining pins housed in axial passages,
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
formed in these blocks and fixed at their ends to the support structure, and the present invention aims to provide an improved hooping device of this type.
According to the invention, in a rubbing device for a core structure of the type specified, the peripheral blocks of the core are connected to a support structure surrounding the core by pins housed in axial passages formed in these blocks and fixed. at their ends to the support structure, each plug has a first bearing surface which carries its * being a cooperating surface in a respective passage so as to allow the plug to flex under the effect of an applied bending force, and other bearing surfaces located in the vicinity of the ends of the plug and capable of limiting its bending with respect to the axis of the passage.
In applications where the core is subjected to strong stress, a flexible connection must be provided between the core and the support structure so that the transverse forces acting on the core can be transmitted in a uniform manner to the core. the support structure, and a rubbing device according to the present invention provides this flexible connection.
The first bearing surface of the plug may be an annular surface of spherical profile which bears against a cooperating cylindrical surface in the passage, and the other bearing surfaces may be formed by annular projections on the plug, these surfaces being normally spaced from the wall of the passage but able to cooperate therewith when the plug flexes to a predetermined extent.
In order to make the present invention fully understood, a rubbing device according to the invention will be described below, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: FIG. 1 is a vertical section of part of a core structure; Fig. 2 is a section on a larger scale following the

shrinking cylinder 14 surrounding the core and welded at its lower end to the annular plate 12.
Transverse reinforcements 15 are welded to the inner surface of the rubbing cylinder 14 and extend circumferentially all around the cylinder and radially inward between the cooperating ends of adjacent peripheral blocks 2c. The peripheral blocks 2c are pierced with axial passages in which the retaining pins 16 and 17 'extend., The ends of the pins being engaged in openings made in the transverse reinforcements 15. The lower pins 17 are held by support tenons 18 fixed to the support plate 9 and forming a support base for each column of peripheral blocks 2c.
In order to position the pins 16 and 17 with precision relative to the support structure 7, the ends of these pins can be held by adjustable devices 19.
Fig. 5 shows in detail the adjustable device used to hold the upper end of the upper plug 16, and FIG. 6 shows the adjustable device used to hold the lower plug 17 and the lower end of the adjacent plug 16, these devices 19 being of identical construction. Each device 19 comprises two cylindrical bushes arranged one inside the other. The outer sleeve 20 is housed in a circular opening made in the transverse reinforcement 15 and can rotate in an adjustable manner about its axis. Two retainers (not shown) are driven like an axle key into opposing walls of sleeve 20 to prevent it from rising through the opening.
The upper part of the socket 20 is threaded and a retaining nut 47 tightened on the reinforcement 15 allows the socket 20 to be blocked so as to prevent it from rotating. A wing washer 48 deformed on the sides of the nut 47 secures the locking of the sleeve 20 which comprises diametrically opposed notches 49 intended to receive the ears of the washer 48. The inner sleeve 21 is eccentrically housed.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
ment in the sleeve 20 and it can also rotate in an adjustable manner about its axis. A clamping nozzle 50 is screwed into the nut 47 so as to press on the inner sleeve 21 and to lock it.
The nozzle 50 has a thin flange which can be deformed to engage grooves in the top of the nut 47 and locks thereon. The inner and outer sockets have holes made in their upper faces for receiving claw wrenches used to adjust them.
The end of a plug or the cooperating ends of adjacent plugs are held eccentrically in the inner sleeve 21 so that the positions of the ends of the plugs can be adjusted relative to the scrub structure *
Each plug 16 can flex when a bending force, for example due to a seismic shock, is applied to it. The plug is of circular section and tapers towards its ends.
In its middle, the plug comprises an annular projection 22 which comprises a first bearing surface of spherical profile which bears against the cooperating cylindrical surface of a lining 23 placed in the passage of the respective block 2c. Further annular protrusions * 24 are provided near the ends of the plug. Each protrusion 24 has a spherical bearing surface which is normally very slightly spaced from the interior surface of the passage in the block but which may come against the interior surface to limit flexing of the plug when the applied force exceeds a certain value. .
The core is therefore connected to the support structure by flexible means capable of allowing a certain transverse displacement of the blocks of the core with respect to the support structure 7. The ends of the pins are provided with annular bearing surfaces 25. of spherical profile and these surfaces bear against the cooperating cylindrical surfaces located in the inner sockets 21 to hold the ends of the pins in these sockets. The lower plug 17 is of substantially cylindrical construction and comprises a cylindrical part.
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
main block 26 and end parts 27.
The main portion 26 is provided with two radial protrusions 28 having spherical bearing surfaces bearing against a cylindrical inner liner 29 housed in the lower block, and the end portions 27 are each provided with a protrusion. radial 30 bearing against a cylindrical surface in a recess 31 provided in the support pin 18 and in the inner sleeve 21 of the adjustable device 19, respectively.
As the transverse reinforcements 15 extend between the ends of the peripheral blocks 2c, these blocks must be spaced from each other. To this end, use is made of spacers or columns of graphite 32 which extend between the cooperating ends of adjacent peripheral blocks, these columns passing through openings made in the transverse reinforcements 15. Although the core is positively connected to the support structure so that the transverse loads exerted on the core are transmitted to the support structure, no axial stress exists between the core and the support structure.
The core is therefore free to expand or contract axially independent of the support structure when it is concerned with thermal variations.
In a kind core, the thermal expansion of the rubbing device deforms the columns of graphite blocks 2. It is possible, by properly adjusting the double eccentric device 19 during the assembly of the core, to preset the graphite blocks 2. such that when the reactor is at operating temperature, the block columns 2 are substantially straight, thus minimizing any coolant leakage from the bushings 3 or one or more channels. Another annular gap existing between the wall of the channel and one or the other socket housed in the channel.
In Figs. 3 and 5, the reflector blocks are covered by radial cover plates 33 * The positions

cover plates are adjusted vertically and horizontally by means of via-jacks 35 and 34 to center the openings 37 on the tenons 36. Subsequent movement, the. cover plates and, consequently, of the loading nozzles 5 and 6, is limited by these screw jacks 34 and 35. The tenors 36 coopi-. rent with the higher cards 16 to limit their dep. vertical cement.
In Figs. 2 and 6, a gas-tight seal is established between the periphery of the backing plate 9 and cylinder 14. The gasket comprises a preferred snnular plate 38 welded to the inner surface of the cylinder 59 and a. year 40 welded to the plate 38 and bearing against the support plate, the gasket 38, 39, 40 being clamped to the support plate by clamping bolts 42. The gasket also includes a second annular plate 43 which is welded to the cylinder a 14 at 44 and which is clamped on the support plate by clamping screws 45.
