<EMI ID=1.1>
<EMI ID=2.1>

<EMI ID=5.1>
<EMI ID=7.1>
<EMI ID=8.1>
<EMI ID=9.1>
<EMI ID=10.1>

<EMI ID=12.1>
<EMI ID=13.1>

"Proc d and device for sealing tubes without fusion.
<EMI ID = 1.1>
and Giuseppe MUSSO, relates to a process and a device
for tight sealing of tubes made of materials which cannot withstand melting without destroying their structure.
It applies in particular - although not exclusively -
sintered metals, such as sintered aluminum for example. She
is applicable in particular to the tight closure of fuel element cladding for nuclear reactors.
We know that aluminum is used for sheathing
fuel elements due to its good mechanical, thermal and neutronic properties. Its welding is currently carried out without difficulty. But the adoption of sintered aluminum posed problems for technicians in assembly and

hot, spark and application of ultrasonic waves.
The method of electron bombardment which is carried out under vacuum and in which the heat input comes from the transformation of the kinetic energy of the electrons produced, for example by an electron gun, has also been used for welding. Electronic bombardment makes it possible to obtain a very narrow beam, therefore a very localized melting zone, but like all welding systems, it therefore causes
from this fusion, a transformation of the metallic structure

come while still using electronic bombardment. To this end, in the method according to the invention, the end of the tube to be closed is cut off along a substantially permeable plane.
<EMI ID = 5.1>
having a protruding part covering the end of the tube and various points of the outer surface of the protruding part of the plug are successively subjected under vacuum to electron bombardment, while at least the part of the periphery of the end of the tube, which is adjacent to the bombarded area, is pressed radially by clamping means against the actual plug placed in the end of the tube, the intensity of the bombardment and the thickness of the protruding part of the plug being chosen so that the end of the tube does not melt, but is subjected to sufficient heating to produce, by diffusion, the joining of the end of the tube and the stopper itself. The combination of a certain clamping pressure <EMI ID = 6.1>
that of assembling the two parts, not a fusion, but a diffusion which has the double advantage of not codifying the structure of the phases present and of ensuring a very intimate connection, as microphotographs have proved, and therefore a perfect seal. The choice of the production conditions makes it possible to limit the molten zone to the protruding part of the stopper, which part can then be eliminated.
In a particular embodiment, a relative movement of the tube-stopper assembly, on the one hand, and of the electronic bombardment and clamping means, on the other hand, is carried out at a speed of the order of a few turns. per minute and for a period of a few minutes.
In another particular embodiment, the clamping means develop on the aforementioned part of the periphery of the end of the tube a force of the order of a few tens of newtons.
The device according to the invention, for the implementation of the above method, comprises a vacuum chamber in
<EMI ID = 7.1>
carrying its stopper, an electronic bombardment means, the axis of which is preferably parallel to that of the tube and passes in the vicinity of the wall of the tube, this axis preferably passing through this wall, the tube with its support, on the one hand, and the assembly formed by the electronic bombardment means and the clamping means, on the other hand, being movable with respect to one another.
A further subject of the invention is a tube stopper for implementing the aforementioned method, a stopper in which the bottom of the stopper proper has a thickness substantially three times that of the tube to be closed, the protruding part having a thickness, counted parallel to the axis of the tube, substantially equal to that of the tube and a width, counted radially, substantially double the thickness of the tube, the shoulder joining the bottom and the protruding part having a height substantially triple of l thickness of the tube.
Other details and features of the invention will emerge from the description given below by way of nonlimiting example and with reference to the appended drawing which schematically shows, in axial section, a device for sealing tubes, in accordance with 'invention.
The tube to be closed is a cylindrical tube 1 made of sintered aluminum, intended to constitute the cladding of a nuclear fuel element (not shown). A stopper 2, also made of sintered aluminum, comprises the stopper proper introduced into the tube 1 and the bottom 3 of which is joined by a shoulder 5
to a projecting annular portion 4. According to the invention, if a denotes the thickness DC of the tube 1, the thickness of the bottom 3
has a value of the order of 3a and that of the projecting part, BC, a value of the order of a, ie BC = CD; moreover, the radial width AB of the projection 4 has a value of approximately 2a and the height of the shoulder 5 (AF) a value of the order of 3a.
It should be noted that the dimensions which have just been defined could be modified, as could the shape of the stopper. This is how the bottom 3 could carry means for attaching or fixing the tube.
The assembly device comprises, according to the invention, (inside a vacuum chamber not shown), a man-
<EMI ID = 8.1>
of the tube 1, and supporting said tube 1. The latter is placed under an electron gun 8 mounted vertically so that its
<EMI ID = 9.1>
put, by means of a yoke 11, to a force of the order of 50 newtons produced by a spring 10, supports so
centripetal on the peripheral part of the end of the tube 1, adjacent to the bombarded zone.
To avoid any deviation of the tube 1, two other rollers, such as 14, mounted like the roller 9, are arranged for example at 120 [deg.] From this roller 9.
The device also comprises means for cooling the tube 1, located under the rollers, therefore in the vicinity of the clamping means. These cooling means consist for example of two red copper half-rings 12 clamped around the tube by a collar 13.
The assembly of the tube and its cap is carried out
<EMI ID = 10.1>
order of two revolutions per minute, the barrel 8 is put into operation and bombards the upper zone AB of the plug 2. This electronic bombardment causes a slight fusion, at 7, in the projecting part 4; the thickness of this part is sufficient so that the intensity of the electron bombardment can be adjusted so that the molten zone 7 does not reach the terminal surface of the end of the tube and lest the local heating caused by the melting generates a temperature gradient along the thickness BC of the plug, and therefore an attenuated heating along the line CD and, to a lesser degree, according to the

<EMI ID = 12.1>
diffusion does not cause any alteration to the metal structure of the parts, and therefore to their mechanical resistance or their thermal conduction coefficient. It is complete after

Thanks to the presence of the half-rings 13, the heat is quickly evacuated below the CDE section. The temperature gradient is very high at the location of the half-rings; és and a significant heating of the tube / of the internal zone is avoided.
below interested in the closure.
The tightness of the assembly was tested with helium under a pressure of 20 kg / cm <2> at a temperature of the order of
500 [deg.] C without it being possible to detect a leak, by means of a helium mass spectrograph connected to an enclosure surrounding the end of the closed tube.
It should be understood that the invention is in no way limited to the embodiment described and that many modifications can be made thereto, without departing from the scope of the present patent. Thus, the leaktight closing method according to the invention applies to tubes of any section, that is to say cylindrical with or without heat exchange fins, square, etc.
