<EMI ID=1.1>

<EMI ID=4.1>

<EMI ID=11.1>
<EMI ID=12.1>
<EMI ID=13.1>

<EMI ID=28.1>
<EMI ID=29.1>
<EMI ID=30.1>

Process for bleaching fibrous materials
and compositions for use in this process.
The invention relates to the bleaching of fibrous materials and to novel compounds and compositions which can be used for this purpose.
Great difficulties have been encountered in the past in finding good bleaching agents for fibrous materials, which at the same time possess the stability necessary to make them commercially useful. The major object of the present invention is to satisfy this need.
According to the invention there is provided a process for bleaching fibrous materials which consists in treating the fibrous material in an aqueous bath containing a diacyl peroxide of
general formula:

<EMI ID = 2.1>
nible when stored for a period of nine months at room temperature; benzoyl auccinyl peroxide,

All diacyl peroxide of the general formula:

are not suitable for bleaching according to the invention. It can be determined whether or not a particular diacyl peroxide of the general formula above is suitable for the purpose of <EMI ID = 6.1>

<EMI ID = 11.1>
It is believed that the bleaching action is effected, not by the diacyl peroxide itself, but by the peracids produced in aitu by hydrolysis of the diacyl peroxide. Therefore the diacyl peroxides used in accordance with the in-
<EMI ID = 12.1>
vention must be either soluble or easily dispersible in the liquid of the bath, otherwise we obviously do not know how to obtain this title. Likewise, the aqueous bath must be such that
<EMI ID = 13.1>
bath has an alkaline pH sufficient to assist the production of this hydrolysis. The pH of the bath is preferably in the range 7.5 to 11, preferably 9 to 10. In order to ensure this pH, the bath may also contain one or more alkali salts. Likewise, one or more organic detergent substances can be added to the bath to assume a cleaning function therein and, incidentally, it is believed that this way of operating facilitates hydrolysis in certain cases by increasing the dispersion.
A further advantage of the bleaches of the present invention is that they can be effectively used to bleach fibrous materials at temperatures below the boiling point of the aqueous bleach bath, for example at a temperature of 50 to 80 ° C. .]VS.
The present invention further provides a bleaching composition which comprises a diacyl peroxide of the character described above. This bleaching composition may contain materials other than diacyl peroxide, such other materials being referred to herein, for convenience, as diluents. This diluent can be another bleaching agent which does not react with diacyl peroxide or a non-bleaching substance; the latter may be an inert diluent or may have any other function which is specific to it. For example, the bleaching composition may contain one or more alkali salts and / or one or more detergent substances which will have the destinations mentioned above.
Examples of suitable detergent compositions are given below:

The soiled cotton fabric used in Example 1 is relatively easier to launder and this explains the relatively high percentage of stain removal. The stained fabric used in the other examples is less easy to launder.

that of diacyl peroxides suitable for use in the process and the compositions of the invention, together with their titre according to the test described above and their effectiveness as bleaching agents is indicated. In this table the% color removal is the% color of the stain that can be removed by repeating Example IV using the particular peroxides specified in an amount which equals a total of 35 ppm d. active oxygen in the solution. This value is the amount of peroxy-

the objects of the invention are reproduced in Table II. The% color removal is that which can be obtained according to Example IV, but using the various peroxides specified in an amount equivalent to 35 p.p.m. of active oxygen in the solution.
<EMI ID = 28.1>
Tables I and II show that there is a general correlation between the titre and the bleaching power, the peroxides having a high titre being good bleaching agents whereas those which have a titre lower than 2.0 cm3 are not. little or no bleaching power.
It has been found that if an aliphatic radical is used for R, the longer the aliphatic chain, the greater the tendency for the compound to have reduced solubility or dispersibility in the bath. This tendency is more pronounced if the aliphatic chain is straight rather than branched.
This tendency can be countered by the introduction of groups
<EMI ID = 29.1>
dispersibility in the bath. For example, sulfonic or carboxylic substituents improve solubility in water. The alkyl or alkoxy substituents, in particular methyl or methoxy, in the 2-position of the R group, lower the melting point of the compound and therefore improve its dispersibility.
<EMI ID = 30.1>
Table II as being inoperative for the present invention can be converted, by the introduction of the foregoing substituents or branched chains, into compounds which are sufficiently soluble or dispersible to acquire the required titre for use according to the invention. .
