<EMI ID=2.1>
<EMI ID=3.1>
<EMI ID=4.1>

"Process for hardening, especially of photographic layers of gelatin or glue, and products obtained."
In the manufacture of photographic layers of
gelatin or glue, it has already been proposed to use, for the hardening and to avoid excessive swelling and / or washout by melting in the treatment baths, in particular at high temperature, the most diverse hardings, such as
example that, aldehydes, diketones, two compounds <EMI ID = 1.1>
: ne, or, in general, compounds containing on the molecule at least two identical or different groups, capable of reacting with gelatin.
On the other hand, it is also known that the action of organic hardeners takes place preferably in an alkaline medium,
(that is to say for a pH greater than 7) when aldehydes such as for example formaldehyde are not used. In use
<EMI ID = 2.1>
produces in the layers of gelatin or glue an effect on the melting point or on the swelling capacity of the layer to which these hardeners are added, but, or this effect is delayed compared to what happens with the same regulated alkaline emulsion, or else it only intervenes for the appreciably increased quantities of reagent. This delay of the effect exerted
by a hardener is particularly undesirable for photographic gelatin or glue layers, as the change in the hardening in the layer during deposition causes a change in the photographic properties and the constancy or stability of the properties of the photographic material is not achieved. only after quite a prolonged time. Equally disadvantageous is overall the increase in additions made to the product, since the often untimely action of the photographic characteristics of the photosensitive material is further increased. Likewise, compounds whose hardening effect on the gelatin or glue layers is based on the presence of at least two epoxy groups in the molecule exhibit optimum hardening action in the alkalinity zone.
In the following table, the values of the curing effects of epoxy compounds for different pH values have been grouped, considering the following substances:
<EMI ID = 3.1>
If these compounds are added to a silver bromide emulsion, for different pH values, at a rate of 0.33 gr per liter of emulsion, let it run,; r on a film, that it is dried and the melting points are determined, in degrees centigrade, of the layers thus obtained after stacking for two days at 5000, the following results are obtained:
<EMI ID = 4.1>
However, it has been observed that compounds comprising at least two epoxy groups, in which these groups are linked by the remainder of a primary amino group or of at least two secondary aminogroups, exert a hardening action, in particular on layers of gelatin and glue., preferably

These compounds are advantageously prepared as follows:
One mole of the amine is added dropwise, between 30 and 32 [deg.] C, with stirring and over thirty to forty minutes, to
192 gr of distilled epichlorohydrin. While cooling at intervals with ice water, the mixture is stirred at this temperature for three to four hours. The syrupy chlorohydrin obtained is extended to 800 to 1000 cc of benzene. Then run in tren-

The combined benzene solutions are dried over sodium sulfate, on ',. the solvent is separated off by vacuum distillation and the residue is fractionated. Returns

with aliphatic radicals, and preferably compounds in which the radical is an unbranched chain.
The hardening effect of the substances, preferably in an acidic medium, results from the following table, in which are grouped data concerning the crosslinking point of the emulsion (RK) and the melting point, both indicated in degrees C for the respectively fresh layer and after a stay

The products proposed in accordance with the invention to serve as an additive can also be used in combination with other hardeners and / or hardening accelerators. They can be added to the emulsion layer, an intermediate layer, a back layer, an auxiliary layer, and / or a coating, or they can be applied in solution on the dry or solidified emulsion layer or on an auxiliary layer. It is obvious that the present invention can be used not only for the preparation of gelatin and silver halide emulsion layers with the desired hardening, but also for the hardening of mixtures of gelatin, glue, or derivatives. gelatin.
