Engrais.
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

Fertilizer.
The present invention relates to improvements to fertilizers, and particularly to fertilizers containing phosphate.
Rock phosphates such as, for example, the commonly available rock phosphates from Morocco, Naura, Florida and Gafsa contain certain amounts of organic matter which apparently remains associated with phosphate when such rock is treated with acids. , for example sulfuric acid and phosphoric acid, for the preparation of the phosphates in agronomically available form, for example superphosphate and triple superphosphate, and phosphoric acid and its salts such as phosphate. ammonium.
When such phosphates are used in the preparation of compound fertilizers by mixing with salts containing nitrate ions, and particularly nitrate,
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
of ammonium, it was found that the temperature of the bulk fertilizer undergoes a marked increase which, according to the findings, can be attributed to the oxidation of organic carbon by nitrate. The spontaneous heating of the fertilizer is very undesirable and leads, among other things, to the caking of the bulk fertilizer.
It has been found that if the phosphates to be employed in compound fertilizers or the compound fertilizers themselves are treated with urea or a urea salt, the oxidation of organic matter is inhibited, and the spontaneous heating of the Bulk compound fertilizer is not done or is greatly reduced.
It is obviously known that urea can be used as a fertilizer or as a source of nitrogen in fertilizers and, in the known fertilizers which contain it, urea is present in large quantities. It has been found, in accordance with the present invention, that an extremely small amount of urea, not more than 5%, based on the content of N + P2O5 + K2O (hereinafter referred to as the content of NPK) of the fertilizer, to ensure inhibition, and that the use of larger quantities of urea can cause serious difficulties. Thus, the presence of urea in the fertilizer causes a reduction in the softening temperature of the mixed fertilizer to a value such that when urea is present in an amount exceeding 5% based on the NPK content. fertilizer, it may be difficult, if not impossible, to granulate the fertilizer satisfactorily.
In addition, the presence of an excess of urea in the case of fertilizers containing calcium salts can cause the inversion of the water-soluble phosphate into dicalcium phosphate by reaction with the ammonia formed by decomposition of the urea.
However, the present invention relates to a method for treating fertilizers comprising phosphates or compound fertilizers containing phosphate and nitrate ions, which comprises the incorporation, in the fertilizers, of urea or of a salt of. urea, the urea or its salt being introduced in an amount of not more than about 5% based on the NPK content of the fertilizer. In the case of salts
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
of urea, it should be understood that the amount employed does not exceed that corresponding to 5% urea based on the NPK content of the fertilizer.
The present invention also relates to a fertilizer composition comprising a phosphate, a nitrate, and urea or a urea salt, the amount of urea or urea salt on the basis of its urea content. , not exceeding about 5% of the NPK content of the fertilizer.
The present invention particularly relates to fertilizer compositions in which the nitrate is present in the form of ammonium nitrate.
The proportion of phosphate in the fertilizer composition of the present invention is advantageously between 2 and 35% by weight of P2O5 based on the weight of the fertilizer composition; it is preferably between 4 and 30%
The proportion of nitrate nitrogen in the fertilizer composition of the present invention is advantageously between 0.5-15% by weight of N based on the weight of the fertilizer composition and is preferably between 1 and 10%. The total N content including nitrate nitrogen can be up to 25 by weight of N based on the weight of the fertilizer composition; it is preferably between 5 and 20% by weight.
The fertilizer composition according to the present invention may also contain other plant nutrition agents, for example, potassium salts. If it contains potassium salt, the proportion of the latter is preferably between 1 and 30% by weight of K20 based on the weight of the fertilizer composition.
The phosphate to be employed in the production of the compound fertilizers may include any phosphate containing organic material, for example superphosphate, triple superphosphate, monocalcium phosphate, dicalcium phosphate, monoammonium phosphate, diammonium phosphate , etc. According to an advantageous embodiment of the invention, the phosphate is single or triple superphosphate. Superphosphates
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
single or triple can advantageously come from rocks from Morocco, Nauru, Florida or Gafsa.
Below are the typical organic carbon contents of superphosphates:
Organic carbon (% C)
Moroccan rock superphosphate 0.10
Nauru rock superphosphate 0.40
Florida Rock Superphosphate 0.16
Gafsa rock superphosphate 0.50
Compound fertilizers can be prepared by mixing the phosphate with the other ingredients such as ammonium nitrate in any conventional manner. According to another advantageous embodiment of the invention, the compound fertilizer is a granulated product obtained from a mixture of superphosphate and ammonium nitrate, with or without ammonium sulfate and potassium chloride.
The urea or the urea salt can be employed in solid form or in the form of an aqueous or other solution, as desired. Since urea and most salts of urea are soluble in water, the latter is employed as the most convenient and economical solvent when it is desired to use a solution.
A salt of urea can be employed with any mineral or organic acid, such as urea nitrate, phosphate, hydrochloride, acetate, oxalate, tartrate or citrate. Where reference is made in this specification to the proportions of urea salts, it is always on the basis of the urea content of the urea salt. It is normally preferred to employ urea in carrying out the present invention because it is cheaper and easier to obtain than urea salts.
The amount of urea or urea salt employed should be less than about 5% of the NPK content of the fertilizer, and preferably comprises 0.25-2.5% of the NPK content of the fertilizer. . According to another embodiment of the invention, the quantity of urea used comprises 0.25-0.75% of the weight of the fertilizer.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
According to a preferred embodiment of the invention, the quantity of urea or of urea salt is the minimum required to ensure the thermal stability of the fertilizer. This quantity is proportional to that of the oxidizable organic matter in the fertilizer but, in general, the use of less than 0.75% for example 0.25-0.75% of urea or of urea salt in weight of the fertilizer is sufficient to inhibit the self-heating of the fertilizer.
Usually it is not necessary to employ higher amounts of urea or urea salt, and it is not desirable to employ urea or a urea salt in an amount greater than 5%. based on the NPK content of the fertilizer because of the influence of urea on lowering the melting point of the mixture and also in the case of fertilizers containing calcium salts, because of inversion to dicalcium phosphate due to reaction with ammonia liberated by decomposition of excess urea.
The effect of urea on the softening point of the fertilizer compositions is illustrated in the following table which shows the variation of the softening and melting points of the fertilizer granules containing increasing amounts of urea.
The fertilizer we tried had the following composition:
Simple superphosphate 27.3% by weight
Triple superphosphate 7.7% by weight
Ammonium nitrate 20% by weight
Ammonium sulfate 14.1% by weight
Potassium chloride 30% by weight.

in NPK of the fertilizer, the granules starting to stick together at drying temperatures and merging into a mass.
Another advantage of the present invention is that the incorporation of urea in the fertilizer significantly reduces its tendency to solidify.
The urea or the urea salt can be incorporated into the fertilizer at any stage of the preparation, and the urea or the urea salt can be used in the solid form or as a solution in a suitable solvent, the most convenient of which is water or an aqueous liquid. Thus, the urea or a solid urea salt, or a solution thereof, can be mixed with the phosphates subsequently incorporated into the compound fertilizers. Alternatively, urea or a solid urea salt, or a solution thereof, can be included in the constituents of the fertilizers at any stage of the preparation. In one embodiment where the aqueous ammonium nitrate is added as a constituent of the fertilizer, the urea or the urea salt can be dissolved in the aqueous ammonium nitrate.
In the case of granulated products, urea or the urea salt or a solution thereof is most preferably added during the granulation stage of the process. This, among other things, limits the contamination of the installation at the granulation stage. In the case where urea or a solid urea salt is added to the other components, this is advantageously done in the divided state, although this is not always necessary. In the case where solutions of urea or urea salts are employed, these can be applied by conventional techniques, for example with the aid of nozzles, etc. If desired, the incorporation of the urea or the urea salt or a solution thereof can be done as the last stage of preparation, at which the fertilizer is otherwise complete.
The following examples illustrate the process of the present invention.

In each case, the superphosphate is employed in the preparation of a granulated compound fertilizer, in which the superphosphate is mixed with ammonium nitrate and potassium chloride and the mixture is granulated. Solid urea, in an amount comprising 0.25% by weight of the complete fertilizer, is added to the mixture during granulation. Urea represents 0.6% of the NPK content of the fertilizer.
The reactivity of the granulated product obtained is then checked by measuring the evolution of gas, and this reactivity is compared with that of the compound fertilizers of the same formula without urea.
