<EMI ID=1.1>
<EMI ID=2.1>
<EMI ID=4.1>
<EMI ID=5.1>
<EMI ID=7.1>
glycol.
<EMI ID=8.1>
<EMI ID=9.1>
compositions.

Coating composition.
The present invention relates to compositions of
<EMI ID = 1.1>
trice, suitable for coating automobile bodies.
Automotive coating compositions should
have several characteristics. Probably the most important of these characteristics is the ability to produce a durable dry film in no more than two applications of the composition.
of adequate thickness, which has acquired on drying a shiny state or
which can be easily made shiny by burnishing; who resists
fading from atmospheric pollution,
fats and tars and which retains a high gloss for
extended periods without the need for polishing. Coating compositions based on methyl methacrylate polymers are known for their property of good retention of
<EMI ID = 2.1>
low solids concentrations, thus requiring multiple applications to form a dry film of the desired thickness. Another important condition is that the dry film can be easily re-coated with the coating composition when it is necessary to touch up damaged parts, without any blistering or wrinkling occurring, and that it remains sufficiently soluble to achieve a complete merger of retouching.
A subject of the present invention is a coating composition comprising, in solution in a volatile solvent, an acrylated alkyd resin modified with non-drying oil and a minor proportion of a modifier resin.
By “acrylated alkyd resin” is meant a resin comprising a polymeric acrylate component and an alkyd resin component, these two components having reacted or being compatible with each other. The acrylate component can be derived from lower alkyl esters of acrylic or methacrylic acids, for example methyl, ethyl, propyl or butyl esters or mixtures thereof.
When the acrylate component reacts with the alkyd resin component, it is preferred that the acrylate component contains carboxyl groups which react during the preparation of the alkyd component with the hydroxyl groups present in the components of the alkyd component. Carboxyl groups can be introduced into the acrylate component by copolymerization with an unsaturated acid such as methacrylic acid, acrylic acid, maleic acid, fumaric acid and crotonic acid. A suitable proportion of unsaturated acid is 1 to 6% by weight of the acrylic ester.
<EMI ID = 3.1> be mixed with a compatible alkyd resin component, for example by mixing solutions of the two compatible components. Polymeric acrylate constituents compatible with
<EMI ID = 4.1>
compositions can be applied tends to be unsatisfactory.
The alkyd resin component is a component modified by a non-drying oil such as castor oil, oil
<EMI ID = 5.1>
by the fatty acids of these oils. The oil length of alkyd resin can be 20-60% by weight, length 30-50%
by weight being preferred.
The polybasic acid of the alkyd resin can be, for example, phthalic acid, isophthalic acid or terephthalic acid or mixtures of these acids, with, if desired, a minor proportion of a dibasic aliphatic acid such as .i. adipic acid, sebacic acid or glutaric acid.
The polyhydroxy alcohol of the alkyd resin can be, for example, glycerol, trimethylol propane, trimethylolethane or mixtures of these alcohols, or alternatively mixtures of pentaerythrol and a glycol.
When the acrylated alkyd resin is prepared by cooking
<EMI ID = 6.1> it is preferred that the viscosity of the acrylated alkyd resin is
<EMI ID = 7.1>
glycol.
The modifier resin is a cellulose derivative such
as cellulose acetobutyrate, cellulose acetate propionate,
cellulose nitrate, ethylcellulose or ethylhydroxyethylcellulose. Among these cellulose derivatives, cellulose acetate butyrate is preferred, in particular that of so-called “half-second !!” quality, which has a viscosity, determined by the A.S.T.M. D-1343- method.
54T, from 0.3 to 0.5 seconds.
The modifier resin and the acrylated alkyd resin can be used in proportions ranging from 1: 4 to 1: 1, respectively. When using higher proportions of modifier resin, namely 1 part of modifier resin per part of acrylated alkyd resin, the coating compositions apply poorly, while with lower proportions of modifier resin, i.e. less than 1 part to 4 parts of acrylated alkyd resin, the films of the coating composition are too thermoplastic and have unsatisfactory polishing properties.
The coating compositions can also contain a plasticizer. Suitable plasticizers are in particular methyl-cyclohexanol-phthalate, butyl-benzyl-phthalate, camphor,
<EMI ID = 8.1>
Plasticizers are particularly useful in compositions in which the acrylated alkyd resin contains a high proportion of acrylate. In general, the proportion of plasticizer can be up to
<EMI ID = 9.1>
compositions.
In compositions comprising an acrylated alkyd resin containing about 50 to 60% acrylate, the proportions of modifier resin, acrylated alkyd resin and plasticizer are advantageously in the range of 1: 2.5: 0.5 to 1: 3: 0, respectively.
Suitable solvents for the compositions include mixtures of ketones, esters, glycol ethers, aromatic hydrocarbons and alcohols.
The coating compositions can advantageously be! pigmented.
The invention is illustrated by the following examples in which the parts are expressed by weight.
EXAMPLE I
i An acrylated alkyd resin is prepared by the following three-step process:
(i) Preparation of the vinyl polymer containing groups
<EMI ID = 10.1>
A mixture of methyl methacrylate (96 parts), methacrylic acid (4 parts) and benzoyl peroxide (1.5 parts) is added slowly, over 4 hours, to 100 parts of xylol heated to a temperature of 130 [ deg.] C. After the addition is complete, the mixture is heated for a further 1 hour. after which all of the monomer has polymerized.
