<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
Exemple I.

"Process for Making Tertiary Aliphatic Methyl Amines".
The present invention relates to an improved process for making tertiary aliphatic methyl amines.
Tertiary aliphatic methyl amines are exceptionally diverse compounds, which can be used for many applications, such as corrosion inhibitors, fuel additives, bactericides, fungicides, coloring agents, mineral flotation agents and intermediates in preparing a quantity of other chemicals, such as compounds
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
ammonium, quaternary. Although these multiple application possibilities have long been known, it has never been possible to fully utilize the potency of tertiary aliphatic methyl amines, primarily because of their prohibitive price.
Although this is in part due to the cost of the raw materials from which tertiary aliphatic methyl amines are made, the main cause has been the lack of an industrially applicable process for their manufacture.
Numerous processes are known for the manufacture of tertiary aliphatic methyl amines, the most notable of which is probably that using reactions between long chain aliphatic alcohols or halides / and methyl amines. The main drawback of these processes is the high price of alcohol or halides. As a counterpart to these processes, there are reactions between the primary and secondary long chain amines and methanol or methyl halide. In the case of methanol, the long reaction periods required and the low yields obtained are detrimental. In the case of methyl halides, it has not been possible to control the production of undesirable by-products, mainly quaternary ammonium compounds.
Another process described in U.S. Patent No. 2,366,534, filed July 30, 1941, involves the reaction between long chain primary and secondary amines with formaldehyde and formic acid, using a solvent, such as methyl alcohol, as a foam control agent. Although this process is still applied, it is not considered economical due to the large amounts of formic acid which are required and the need to recover the anti-foaming solvent.
U.S. Patent No. 2,373,705, filed November 25
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
1941, relates to a process for the manufacture of secondary and tertiary amines which has never been applied for the manufacture of tertiary long chain aliphatic methyl amines. This process comprises reacting hydrogen and an aliphatic aldehyde with an aminating agent, such as ammonia, and amines having an unsubstituted hydrogen atom; it comprises the introduction of the aldehyde gradually into the mass of aminating agent having a hydrogenation catalyst present in the latter and maintained in the liquid phase under hydrogen pressure.
Although this process has shown promise for industrial application in the manufacture of tertiary aliphatic methyl amines, the results obtained with long chain primary or secondary amines and formaldehyde have been shown to be unacceptable with respect to yields and the production of unwanted by-products.
However, it has now surprisingly been found according to the invention that these difficulties can be substantially overcome by including, either in the amine or in formaldehyde, a very small amount, for example envi - ron 0.5 to about 3% by weight, relative to the amine, of a catalyst described in detail below. A means has made it possible, according to the invention, to obtain yields greater than 90% with primary amines and practically quantitative yields when starting from secondary amines.
The invention therefore creates a new improved process for the manufacture of tertiary aliphatic methyl amines, various other characteristics of which will moreover emerge from the description which follows.
Amines which can be used as starting materials according to the present invention are generally characterized in that they are primary amines substituted by long chain aliphatic hydrocarbon radicals, symmetrical and asymmetric secondary amines.

and diamines which can be represented by the formulas

general R1NH2, (R1) 2NH, R1NH (CH2) 3NH2; in each formula, R1 and R2 are aliphatic hydrocarbon radicals having 8 to 22 carbon atoms. Specific examples of such aliphatic hydrocarbon radicals include octyl, decyl, dodecyl, tetradecyl, hexadecyl, octadecyl, octadecenyl, octadecadienyl, octadecatrienyl, eicosyl and docosyl.
Mention may also be made of the static mixtures of the above radicals in the form in which they are present in animal and vegetable fats and oils, such as tallow, coconut oil, soybean oil, liquid resin and the like. The preferred amino raw materials are, primarily for economic reasons, the primary and secondary monoamines which are produced industrially by the reduction with hydrogen of nitriles obtained by the ammoniaation of mixed fatty acids produced by hydrolysis of tallow, coconut oil and soybean oil. These amines are sold commercially under the trademark ARMEEN differentiated by the countermarks T, 2T, C, 2C, S and 2S.
The T's, C's and S's indicate that the hydrocarbon part of the compounds is derived from tallow oil, coconut oil and soybean oil and the 2 indicates a secondary amine.
The aliphatic diamines which can be used as raw materials according to the present invention are sold commercially under the trademark DUOMEEN with the same countermarks T, C and S. These aliphatic diamines are prepared from the corresponding primary mono-amines. - tes by adding acrylonitrile thereto, which is followed by the reduction with hydrogen of the nitrile group to a primary amine group. Thus, these compounds contain both primary and secondary amine groups in the molecule. Particular examples of such aliphatic diamines include the diamines

N-tallow-trimethylene, N-coco-trimethylene and N-soy-trimethylene mines.
The aldehyde used in the process of the invention is formaldehyde which can affect the form of its linear polymer, paraformaldehyde or in solution with a non-interfering solvent, such as methanol. The preferred part is to use formaldehyde in the form of a 55% by weight solution of a monomer and a polymer mixed in methanol and water. This material is commercially available under the trademark Methyl Formcel.
The most notable feature of the invention is the catalyst which the inventors have found to be particularly effective in overcoming the problem of low yields and unwanted by-product formation.
These catalysts are used in very small amounts, ranging from about 0.5 to about 3% by weight, based on the amount of amino raw material and can be used either by adding the total amount to. the amino material which is maintained in the liquid phase, either by gradual addition during the reaction, either alone or in combination with formaldehyde.
These catalysts are weak acids selected from the group consisting of short-chain aliphatic mono- acids, such as acetic, propionic and butyric acids, short-chain aliphatic hydroxy-monoacids, such as lactic acid, aliphatic diacids. ticks, such as adipic acid, and aromatic acids, such as benzofque acid. The preferred acid catalyst is glacial acetic acid and the preferred amount of catalyst is about 1% by weight based on the amount of the amino raw material.
In the process of the invention, the amino raw material, such as primary tallow amine, is passed through
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
through a reaction vessel and is maintained under the liquid phase at a temperature between 50 and 175 C, preferably about 110 C. The amine is added either before or after admission to the reaction vessel, a small amount of a hydrogenation catalyst, for example about 0.1 to 1% by weight, based on 1-amine, which can be any suitable hydrogenation catalyst, such as niclel Raney, precious metals or the like. If desired, glacial acetic acid in an amount of about 1% by weight of the amino material can be added to the amine.
However, it is preferred to add glacial acetic acid in combination with the material known commercially under the trade name Methyl Formcel. The material amino with the hydrogenation catalyst and with or without the acid catalyst is maintained under a hydrogen pressure of at least 1.75 kg / cm 2.
The upper limits of hydrogen pressure are set by the ability of the equipment used to withstand this pressure. However, extremely high pressures are not necessary and the process is effective at a pressure of about 7 to 17.5 kg / cm2. This is well within the tolerable limits with conventional installations.
Formaldehyde, preferably in the form of a 55% solution by weight of monomer and polymer in methanol and in water, is gradually added to the amino material, maintained in the liquid phase at the temperatures and pressures described (Methyl Formcel ). Preferably, along with the formaldehyde, an amount of a weak acid catalyst, such as glacial acetic acid, is added in an amount sufficient to produce about 1% by weight of the total amount of starting amino material. The reaction rate depends on the rate at which formaldehyde is added, this reaction can take from 1 to 6 hours approximately. In general,
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
it can be done completely in about 3 hours.
The invention is illustrated with the aid of the following examples:
Example I.
A hydrogenation conversion apparatus was charged with 4.536 kg of n-hexadecane nitrile with 22.7 kg of Raney nickel and 22.7 kg of filtering material. Hydrogen gas was added over about 2 hours while maintaining a temperature between 140 and 160 ° C, as well as a hydrogen pressure of between 13.3 kg / cm2 and 14 kg / cm2. this reaction was tried and found to consist of 91.3% primary amine and 1.8% secondary amine.
From this crude primary amine 453 kg were removed and to the remaining 4,083 kg were added 22.7 kg of fresh Raney nickel catalyst and Methyl Formcel containing 45 kg of acetic acid, on the basis of 1% by weight. of the mine. The reaction was allowed to proceed at a temperature of 118 ° C and under a hydrogen pressure of 12.3 kg / cm2 for about 5 hours during which a total of 1796 kg of Methyl Formcel was added. The reactor was then cooled to 60 ° C. and the water of reaction formed with the methyl alcohol was separated by allowing it to flow from the supernatant tertiary amine. The yield was 3.901 kg comprising on analysis 84.0% tertiary amine.
Example II.
An amino starting material was prepared as described in Example 1 from 4,536 kg of n-hexadecane nitrile.

the following comparative indications using formic acid:
To 392 parts of N-tallow trimethylene diamine was added. 100 parts of methyl alcohol and water, then
214 parts of 90% formic acid. Maintaining a temperature not exceeding 65 ° C., 239 parts of 37% formaldehyde were gradually added to this mixture. The reaction was allowed to proceed for 3-4 hours at 65 ° C. The free fatty acid was then neutralized with caustic soda, then washed with water and dried. The composition of the product was 1.2% primary amine, 4.0% secondary amine and 54.5% tertiary amine.
Example IV.
A one liter Magnadash autoclave was loaded with 500 g of n-octadecylamine and 25 g of Raney nickel. A total of 141.5 g (97 molecule-grams per cent) of Methyl Formcel with 2.5 g of glacial acetic acid (base 0.5% based on the weight of the reactor) was continuously added to the reactor. the mine). The reaction was allowed to proceed for about 6 hours at a temperature of 120 ° C. and a maximum hydrogen pressure of 10.5 kg / cm 2. The composition of the starting amine was 96.5% primary amine and 2.2% secondary amine. The composition of the final amine was 0.0% primary amine, 0.7% secondary amine and 88.5% tertiary amine.
The comparative indications were obtained by continuously adding to the same starting material 105 molecule-grams per cent of Methyl Formcel. No acid catalyst was used. The reaction was carried out for about 4 hours at a temperature of 135 ° C. and under a maximum hydrogen pressure of 10.5 kg / cm2. The composition of the starting amine was 96.5% primary amine and 2.2% secondary amine. The composition of the final amine was 1.0% primary amine, 0.0% secondary amine and 74.3%
