<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

"Apparatus for high temperature reactions".
The present invention relates to an apparatus for high temperature reactions, comprising a bomb closed at its upper part by a cover and heated externally laterally and on the face opposite to the cover, the length of the bomb being such that the length of the bomb. temperature in the vicinity of the cover is much lower than that of the load.
When the reaction is to result in the production of a metal or alloy in massive form, it is important that the metal or alloy melts reliably, at least momentarily. Many reactions begin spontaneously as soon as a sufficient temperature is reached, if only locally at a privileged point, and propagates throughout the load itself
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
if the temperature before reaction is not uniform. It may therefore be of prime importance to be able to bring the entire load to as high a temperature as possible.
Since the melting temperature is very high, there is a real interest in reducing any temperature differences between the different zones of the load. It is therefore important that the temperature of the feed before reaction is uniform.
To this end, the apparatus according to the invention comprises an internal heating means arranged above the load in order to standardize the temperature of the latter before reaction.
Other details and particularities of the invention will emerge from the description of the drawing appended to the present memory and which represents, by way of non-limiting example, a particular embodiment of an apparatus in accordance with the invention.
The figure is a vertical sectional view of an apparatus for high temperature reaction, specially designed for the preparation of zirconium ingots or zirconium alloys obtained by calciothermy from zirconium tetrafluoride.
The apparatus shown comprises a cylindrical enclosure 1, made of stainless steel and which can be considered to be formed of two parts. The lower part 4 is the charge reservoir. Its walls are preserved by a refractory coating 8 obtained by tamping powdered calcium fluoride, at room temperature and in the open air, then by frying it by heating under vacuum to an internal temperature of approximately 860 C. The coating extends to a little beyond the maximum height provided for the load, on which is placed a covering cover 3 made of tinned iron, intended to separate the load from the rest of the enclosure and, in flux, to provide at least part of the iron and tin necessary for the formation of the alloy,
when the apparatus is used for the production of alloys of the "Zircaloy" type; in other cases the cover 3 is made
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
in a refractory material, such as fluorite for example.
The cover 3 has a shape such that the refractory lining surrounds it, in the manner of a sleeve, over a certain length; a suitable separation is thus ensured between the lower part 4 of the enclosure 1 and the upper part 2. The latter contains powdered calcium fluoride, serving as thermal insulator; part 2 has a relatively large length, in order to allow a sufficient temperature drop between the level of cover 3 and that of the upper end of part 2; the latter is sealed by a cover 6, fixed to a flange 7 welded to the upper part of the enclosure 1.
The enclosure 1 is placed in a muffle furnace 9, indicated in dotted lines and making it possible to bring the charge to a temperature sufficient for the planned reaction; furthermore, to compensate for the heat losses at the top of the load, a heating resistor 5 formed by a kanthal conductor and designed to dissipate at least 250 watts is placed on the cover 3.
A connection pipe 10 mounted on the closure cover 6 makes it possible to create a vacuum in the enclosure 1, then optionally to put the latter in an inert atmosphere, by introducing argon, for example.
