<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

The present invention relates to a delay network and in particular to the unbalanced or three terminal type of delay power line.
A well-known type of three-terminal delay network is essentially an unbalanced circuit comprising a coil or winding isolated from, but electrically coupled along its length to a conductive piece to establish in the network a series inductor and a coil. shunt capacity. An input terminal and an output terminal are respectively provided at the ends of the winding, while a third terminal or common terminal is connected to the conductive part and is generally in the form of an earth electrode. Such a line, which simulates a transmission line, has a delay time and characteristic impedance which are a function of the total effective series inductance and the total effective shunt capacitance.
These parameters are determined by material characteristics such as dimensions, number of turns per unit length, as well as the type and thickness of the dielectric material between the winding and the conductive part. To obtain considerable delay times with structures of acceptable dimensions, the winding consists of a large number of turns per unit length. To further increase the delay time per unit length, or had previously resorted to a distributed winding effected by means of a machine the feed of which comprised only a fraction of the diameter of the wire, resulting in a coil in multiple layers resembling a stacked winding.
The windings formed in this way were however very irregular, which made it very difficult to obtain delay lines with uniform characteristics.
In simple distributed parameter delay lines, the current in successive turns undergoes a phase shift which is accentuated as the frequency increases. For this purpose, the inductance and therefore also the delay time per unit length decreases as the frequency increases. This manifests as phase distortion and has a marked influence on the shape of the pulses. Various arrangements have been employed to compensate for this phase distortion, in order to obtain better fidelity in reproducing the shape of the pulse. It is thus possible to have recourse to types of coil which give only a small delay time per unit of length, or to compensation means such as additional capacitors.
However, this type of solution leads either to a long and bulky line, or to devices of difficult manufacture. Also known is a way of dividing a single layer winding into a plurality of sections so as to reduce phase distortion by reducing the number of out-of-phase flux links. This expedient, however, makes the line relatively long.
It is also possible to design a delay system with grouped parameters.
Such a network is relatively small and has good electrical characteristics.
However, such a network has a multiplicity of separate external capacitors, individually connected to the junction points of a corresponding number of inductors connected in series. It can be seen immediately that such a construction must be relatively expensive and bulky and does not easily lend itself to economic mass production. One of the main objects of the present invention is the construction of a compact system having a relatively large delay time.
Another aim of the invention is to construct such a network which reacts well to pulses.
Another object of the invention is to construct such a network which is easy to manufacture economically.
In accordance with the present invention, one type of three terminal delay network, easy to manufacture, having a relatively large delay time and responding well to pulses, is constituted by a network comprising an elongated conductor member and an elongated coil having a plurality
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
multi-layered sections isolated from said conductive member but electrically coupled to the latter over the entire length of said sections so as to constitute a distributed shunt capacitance which, together with the inductance of the winding, determines the delay time of the system.
In another feature, the individual winding sections are of a length which, combined with the spacing between sections, gives the optimum mutual induction between sections to ensure the best response to impulses. The sections can be moved apart to reduce mutual inductance, but in the preferred embodiment they are closely adjacent.
According to another feature, in the preferred embodiment of the invention, the wire used for the winding has a polyvinyl insulation such as "quadruple Formex" in order to give rise to a low capacitance between turns, so that the main effective capacity is that which exists between the lower layer and the conductive organ. To reduce losses to a minimum, the shunt capacitance is obtained by means of a relatively large conductive member, i.e. forming an almost complete turn, separated from the winding by a low loss dielectric. , relatively thick, such as "mylar".
The objects and features mentioned above as well as other objects and features of the present invention, as well as the manner of obtaining them, will appear more clearly, and the invention itself will be best understood by the description given below of an embodiment. execution of the invention with reference to the accompanying drawings comprising Figures 1 to 3, of which Figure 1 is a delay line according to the invention; Figure 2 is a perspective view partially cut away and partially shown in section on a plane indicated by lines 2-2 of Figure 1; and FIG. 3 is an enlarged-scale sectional view, taken through an axial plane indicated by lines 3-3 of FIG. 1, showing details of a section of the coil.
For a more in-depth knowledge of electromagnetic delay lines and the problems which arise from them, see Millman and Taub "Pulse and Digital Circuits", McGraw Hill, 1956, chapter 10; and in the "MIT Radiation Laboratories" series, volume 17: "Blackburn's Components Handbook", chapter 6, and volume 19, Chance et al "Waveforms" chapter 22, as well as the various bibliographic notices mentioned in each of these. these works.
A typical application of such a delay line is in the memory of a time division multiplex telephony interconnection system, such as that which has been described in the patent application for a System. Electronic Switching No. PV.38.369, filed October 7, 1958, in the name of the Applicant Company.
Referring now to Figures 1 and 2 of the accompanying drawing, it is seen that the delay line 10 has a winding comprising a plurality of winding sections S1 to SL. A conductive member 22, constituting a grounding tab in the form of a thin copper tape or other conductive substance, is wound on the core 20. The dielectric for the shunt capacitor is formed by an insulating sheet 24. wound on said grounding tab, with one of its edges attached to the core by adhesive tape 26, while the other edge is held in place by adhesive tape 28. These various parts 20 to 28 are extend the entire length of the line and extend past the ends of the coil.
An input terminal 12 is connected to the input of the winding section S1, an output terminal 14 is connected to the end of the winding section SL, and a ground terminal 16 is connected to. the grounding tab 22.
All winding sections are similar, and figure 3 mon-
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
be the details of section S1. It comprises 65 turns in three layers, the turns T1 to T25 of the inner layer being wound from left to right immediately against the insulating sheet 24, a second layer comprising the turns T26 to T48 being wound from right to left, and one outer layer comprising the turns T49 to T65 being wound from left to right. The next turn T66 is the first of the section S2 and is adjacent to the turn T25,
More specifically still, the core 20 is a cylindrical tubular piece of a phenolic insulating material.
The grounding tab 22 is a conductor such as copper foil and has a relatively large width, i.e. sufficient to cover most of the periphery of the core 20. The insulating foil 24 is made of a low loss dielectric material such as "mylar" and is held in place by adhesive polyester tape 26 and 28. The coil may be covered with a layer of polystyrene for coils.
By making use of a formx quadruple insulation, the capacitance between turns can be kept so low that the effective main capacitance is that which exists between the inner layer of the winding and the grounding tab 22. By As a result of the use of a wide grounding tab 22 and an insulating sheet 24 of a low loss dielectric material, such as mylar, the losses are lower than if the Formex insulation alone were the dielectric for the shunt capacitance.
The well known theory of grouped parameter delay lines shows that a certain optimum mutual inductance between inductance sections gives the best response to the pulses. This mutual inductance is determined by various factors such as the ratio of length to diameter for each section, and the spacing between successive sections. The mutual inductance must be such that the total effective series inductance is independent of the frequency or approaches this condition.
In a preferred embodiment; the winding sections are adjacent, and with contiguous turns, and their respective lengths are chosen so as to obtain the best response to the impulses. For higher impedance lines, it would be preferable to space the sections apart to reduce mutual inductance.
A particular embodiment of a delay line according to the present invention responds to the following data:
