Het is eveneens bekend als stabilisatoren en sluierwerende middelen volgende verbindingen aan zilverhalogenideemulsies toe tevoegen: nitrobenzimidazolen, ni- tromdazolen, triazolen, mercaptogroepen-bevattende verbindingen, zoals bijvoorbeeld de pyrimidinethion-2 verbindingen beschreven in het Belgisch octrooischrift 523.115; mercaptotriazinen, zoals deze beschreven in het Belgisch octrooischrift 531.277;

lyethyleenoxideoleylether of polyethyleenoxideakylfenolother.

This invention relates to anti-fogging agents and stabilizers for photographic emulsions as well as photographic material containing these products.
It is a well known phenomenon that photographic emulsions on storage tend to lose sensitivity and become spontaneously developable without prior exposure; this phenomenon is commonly referred to as chemical veil to distinguish it from the light veil due to unwanted illumination. It depends on the emulsion itself as well as on storage and the development conditions. Fogging is proportional to age, as well as to temperature and relative humidity during storage, but can also be caused by chemical action of reactive substances. During development, the veil increases with time and bath temperature.
The photographic industry has always strived to produce photographic emulsions that are as stable as possible, especially with a view to the preservation and use of photographic material in tropical regions.
As stabilizers and anti-fogging agents, compounds of the most diverse classes of both organic and inorganic chemistry are known. For example, emulsions can be stabilized with mercury compounds or with complex compounds of heavy metals such as palladium and platinum.
It is also known as stabilizers and antifogging agents to add the following compounds to silver halide emulsions: nitrobenzimidazoles, nitromdazoles, triazoles, mercapto group-containing compounds, such as, for example, the pyrimidinethione-2 compounds described in Belgian Patent No. 523,115; mercaptotriazines, such as those described in Belgian Pat. No. 531,277;
thiazoles and quaternary salts of oxa, selena and thiazoles, isoclic and hterocyclic disulfides, such as, for example, those described in Belgian Patent Specification 481,832; benzazole, tetrazole and pyrimidine thiocyanates, such as, for example, those described in Belgian Patent Specification 515,789; hydroxy- and aminopyrimidines, pyrazoles and pyrazolones, amines and amides, di-, tri- and terazaindene, such as, for example, those described in Belgian patents 495,198, 496,155 and 498,913, and finally sulfinic and selenic acid derivatives.
A process has now been found for stabilizing photographic silver halide emulsions by adding to these emulsions or to a water permeable layer in contact with them a 2-mercapto-1,3,4-thiazine corresponding to the general formula. :
EMI1.1
wherein: R1 to R6 represent hydrogen atoms or lower alkyl groups, R3 to R6 may be part of a benzene nucleus, and R5 to R6 may represent a single bond, leaving a second thiazine nucleus attached to the first
The compounds according to the invention are preferably added to the emulsion after the second maturation or just before pouring. This can be done under @

dissolved form in a suitable solvent such as water, lower aliphatic alcohols and ketones.
When the solution is added to the emulsion at an appropriate concentration before pouring, it does not appear to have affected the sensitivity appreciably. Sensitometric measurements at significant time intervals and after tropical or dry storage conditions show that the sensitivity was stabilized and the shutter was kept at a low level.
Instead of adding the stabilizers to the photographic silver halide emulsions, they may be added to a water permeable layer such as a gelatin topcoat or intermediate layer in contact with the emulsion.
The emulsions used may be sensitized by any conventional method. For example, they may be chemically sensitized by maturing in the presence of a small amount of sulfur-containing compound, such as allyl isothiocyanate, allyl thiourea, or sodium thiosulfate. The emulsions can also be sensitized with reducing agents, such as, for example, the tin compounds described in Belgian patents 493,464 and 568,687, the imino-aminomethanesulfinic acid compounds described in Belgian patent 547,323, and small amounts of noble metal compounds such as gold, platinum, palladium, etc. iridium, ruthenium and rhodium.
It is further also possible to sensitize the emulsions with polyalkylene oxide derivatives such as, for example, polyethylene oxide, dipolyethylene glycoxide, polyalkylene oxide.
EMI2.1
lyethylene oxide oleyl ether or polyethylene oxide alkyl phenolother.
With a view to obtaining certain effects, these sensitizers can of course be used in combination, such as, for example,
EMI2.2
wrote in Belgian Patent No. 537,278 and British Patent No. 727,982.
While optical sensitizers can affect the sensitivity and haze formation of an emulsion, it has been shown that both optically non-sensitized and cyanine dye-sensitized emulsions, such as, for example, orthochromatic and panchromatic emulsions, may be treated with the stabilizers of the present invention. Thus, it is possible to use the stabilizers according to the present invention in all negative and positive films and paper types commonly used in black and white and color photography, such as, for example, graphic material, X-ray films, etc.
The amount of stabilizer added may vary according to the kind of silver halide or mixture thereof used, the state of maturation, the presence or absence of other emulsion additives such as colorants, optical brighteners, anti-fogging agents, anti-static agents, antioxidants, substances that affect image tone , etc. In general, this amount of stabilizer is between about 0.001 and 0.15 grams per mole of silver halide. However, in some circumstances, such as, for example, with a view to obtaining certain effects, larger amounts may be used.
For illustrative purposes, a list of some tested compounds is provided, without however limiting the invention thereto.

In the practice of the process of the present invention, use can also be made of special processes for emulsion preparation.
For example, the silver halide can first be precipitated in a small amount of gelatin and the resulting dispersion, with or without further addition of dispersant, can be poured into an organic water-miscible liquid (Belgian Pat. Nos. 5580500 and 561.484) or with a mineral salt such as after - precipitate triumethylate.
Very good results are also obtained when replacing gelatin with other dispersing agents for the silver halide, such as, for example, cellulose sulphates (Belgian patent 558.148), copolymers of methaorylic acid and diethylaminoethyl methacrylate (Belgian patent 561.161) ampylopeotine and starch (Belgian patent 568.154). , or copolymers of (meth) acrylic acid and vinyl pyridine (Belgian Patent 568,155)
The emulsions with gelatin as binder can be hardened by adding a.o.
of chromium alum and formaldehyde, of reaction products of maleic acid derivatives with amino groups and / or hydroxyl groups-containing polymers (Belgian Pat. Nos. 552,537, 565,860 and 565,862), of polysaccharides with secondary alcohol groups oxidized to aldehyde groups (Belgian patent 566,352), formaldehyde resin (Belgian Patent Specification 494,948) or of a 2,3-dihalo-dioxane (Belgian Patent Specification 495,747).
However, if macromolecular reaction products of amino- and / or hydroxyl groups-containing macromolecular compounds are used as binder with compounds of the -type A-CX = CY-Z, wherein A is a carboxyl-, a carboxy-methyl or an aldehyde group, X and Y each represents a carboxyl group or a hydrogen or halogen atom, and Z represents a carboxyl group or a hydrogen atom, provided, however, that at least one of the symbols X, Y and Z represents a carboxyl group, then as hardeners for these reaction products, polyfunctional agents can be used. single amines such as, for example, gelatin are used (Belgian Patent Specification 565,859).
Silver halide emulsions composed entirely of synthetic compounds are described, inter alia, in Belgian patent 568,153, where use is made of monoesters of polyvinyl alcohol and polybasic acids as dispersing agent and of polyvinyl alcohol as a layer-forming binder.
Emulsions with polyvinyl alcohol as binder can be converted into thermoreversible gels by adding a hydroxyl group-containing aromatic compound, such as, for example, hydroquinone. adding resorcinol and a-naphthol. For example, dimethylolurea or formaldehyde can be added to cure these polyvinyl alcohol emulsions. ** WARNING ** End of DESC field may contain beginning of CLMS field **.
