REVENDICATIONS.

The invention relates to the drive and suspension of the driving wheels of motor vehicles and relates to a particular embodiment of the cardan joint joining the drive shaft to the wheel hub, as well as the arrangement of knuckle arms connected to articulation. to the suspension arms.
The devices used to transmit the engine torque to a driving wheel are often constituted by cardan joints, coupled to the hub of the wheel by splines cut on an axis forming part of the cardan shaft.
In the improvements that are the subject of the invention, any assembly of the type described above is eliminated by the use of an original arrangement in which the wheel hub and the cardan shaft on the wheel side form a single piece.
The invention further relates to the mounting of the wheel in which the knuckle-bearing arms are formed of two half-shells made of stamped sheet metal, assembled by welding or by any other means.
All of these arrangements make it possible to obtain certain advantages with regard in particular to the lowering of the cost price, the reduction in weight and in general the running conditions.
In an alternative embodiment, the cardan yoke integral with the wheel hub is arranged on the outer side of the wheel, while the cardan shaft passes through the hub.
In the attached drawing:
FIG. 1 is a section taken along a plane passing through the axis of the wheel hub and the centers of articulation of the knuckle levers with the suspension arms.
Figure 2 is an alternative embodiment of the arrangement of Figure 1.
If we refer to the drawing, we see at 1 the rim of a drive wheel bearing the pneumatic tire 2.
The rim 1 is fixed to the hub 3 in the usual way by a series of bolts 4 and nuts 5.
The hub or spindle 3 is extended by a tail in which the yoke 6 of the universal joint is machined, and which has the thread 7 on which the stop 8 of the special double bearing 9 is screwed, centered internally on the seat 10 of the hub and resting against a shoulder 11 of this hub.
Seals 12 and 13 isolate the bearing 9 from road dust.
The knuckle carrier is constituted by a ring 14 forming the outer surface of the bearing 9 which is retained laterally by two rings 15 and 15 'centered on the ring 14.
On this ring 14 are attached two arms, one external 16, the other internal 17. These arms constitute two half-shells of stamped sheet metal.
The half-shells are assembled together and on the ring 14 by welding or by any other means.
The spherical ball joints 20 and 21 of the suspension arms 22 and 23 are fixed in conical sockets made in rings 24 and 25 attached to the shells of the arms 16 and 17.
The centers A and C of these ball joints are in alignment with the center B of the gimbal. A plate 26 in the form of a washer comes to rest in a circular fashion on the stop ring 15 of the bearing and is fixed by bolts 27 which are screwed into nuts 28 welded before assembly inside the half-shell forming the arm 17

The arrangement of the hub allows a rigid construction avoiding any flapping of the splines, increases the safety of the assembly and the operating endurance.
On the other hand, the lightness of the device improves the rolling conditions of the wheel, reduces the unsprung weight and attenuates the reactions transmitted to the body.
The use of a double row ball bearing in combination with the hub, object of the invention, makes it possible to produce an assembly which is housed substantially in the axis of the wheel, which allows a small offset from the ground of the wheel. wheel, favorable in the case of a steered wheel.
This assembly also increases the length between the centers of articulation of the shaft of the gimbal and reduces the angles of oscillation of the latter.
The combination of the hub and the knuckle carrier, objects of the invention, makes it possible to combine the advantages of low cost price and lower weight with equal rigidity compared to conventional embodiments.
In the variant embodiment, in FIG. 2, it can be seen that the rim 1 of the wheel 2 is, as indicated above, fixed on the hub 3 mounted with the interposition of the double bearing 9 in the ring 14 of the ball-bearing arms 20, 21. The hub 3 is extended from the outer side of the wheel by a shank in which the yoke 6 of the cardan joint is machined, the shaft 29 of which thus passes through the hub 30.
This arrangement allows the cardan shafts to operate under better conditions as a result of the increase in the length of the cardan shaft and to more easily monitor the outer cardan shaft for disassembly and lubrication after simple disassembly of the wheel.
The arms or levers 30 stub axle or hub are, in the embodiment shown, obtained as a single piece with the ring 14 receiving the bearing 9.
