<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

The present invention relates to a machine for spiraling, twisting, etc.
In a patent application filed at the same time as the present one, the applicant has placed under protection a bundle or winding of yarn with a view to obtaining straight yarns, characterized in that the bundle is formed by the en- bearing with contiguous turns of two twisted wires possibly with a tear-off outer casing.
To wind, without internal support, wires (insulated or non-insulated electrics), twisted beforehand and to obtain the coating of the tube formed by paper or any other coating, one could in principle: 1) twist the two wires according to the conventional method (two spools on a common support, this support being driven by a rotational movement and traction being exerted on the wires: they come out twisted, the ratio of the speeds of advance of the wires and of rotation of the common support determining the pitch of the twist); 2) winding in contiguous turns a cord consisting of two twisted son, this winding being done on any support.
The desired length (or the maximum possible, depending on the length of the support) being rolled up, all you have to do is remove the support; @ @ 3) surround the wound cord (before or after removing the support) with a coating consisting either of one or more strips of paper, canvas, etc., wound in a spiral or lengthwise, or by coating (spraying, dipping or coating by any process) with a plastic coating (glue, varnish, resin, PVC, etc.).
A machine having to perform all these operations would be very complex, but above all it would not allow continuous production. In addition, the ratio of the twist pitch and the winding diameter of the twisted cord is a critical value, the slightest excess or reduction of which causes poor workmanship of the finished "tube".
On the other hand, for lengths of more than a few centimeters, the removal of the interior support of a cord of twisted son wound with contiguous turns becomes impossible.
The object of the present invention is to remedy all the drawbacks mentioned above and to allow very rapid continuous production.
With a view to achieving this aim, this machine is characterized in that it comprises in main order a device by which two threads are wound in spiral form separately but simultaneously and then are brought together in the wound state, a device causing a start penetration of the turns of the two threads one into the other and a device completing the penetration so as to finally obtain a winding of two spiraled and twisted threads.
Such a machine may additionally comprise means for coating the tube with thread which has been formed to form an envelope constituting a cocoon.
The accompanying drawings show by way of example through Figure 1 and schematically a machine designed according to the invention.
FIG. 2 schematically shows the final winding and the bringing together of the two spiral wires.
On any support 1 is fixed a mandrel 2, which is generally metallic (polished steel round bar, for example). A wheel 3 comprising a tire 4 with an air chamber rotates on an axis 5 in a plane perpendicular (or approximately) to the axis of the mandrel 2 and comes close to this mandrel.
If a wire 6 (bare or insulated conductor) is introduced between the mandrel 2 and the tire 4, the wire fed by a traction pulley 7 from a spool 8 is driven and is wound in a spiral on the mandrel ( the turns are contiguous or not depending on the setting used). The tire being always in ro-
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
tation, the wire continues to wind on the mandrel; Coils 9 already formed leave the mandrel and advance while rotating on a horizontal or inclined plane disposed in front of the mandrel.
This plane is formed by an endless conveyor belt 10 which circulates. on two rollers 11 and above which are arranged two parallel strips 12 of metal or another material constituting a passage in which the spiral wire turns and advances.
A second mandrel 21 is arranged next to the first so as to be brushed against by the same tire. It is fed by a similar wire 61 coming from another spool 81 via another traction pulley 71.
On the same conveyor 10 is disposed a corridor 121 parallel to the corridor 12 such that the turns coming from the mandrel 21 engage in this corridor.
Towards the end of the conveyor 10 opposite to that located in front of the tire 1, the two lanes 12-121 approach and meet to form a single lane 13.
A peculiarity of this corridor 13 is that it comprises a section 14 whose walls are animated by a vibrating movement that is to say. That these side walls act on the spirals so as to cause a start of penetration of these spirals into each other.
The distance between the outlet of the mandrels 7-71 and the single passage 13 with vibrating walls constitutes the maximum length of wire that can be worked.
Depending on the winding diameter, this length represents stretches of wire from 70 to over 100 to 250 meters, which covers all practical needs.
At the output of the two fixed mandrels 7-71est placed a rapid severing device for the son and consisting for example of a circular silk, a guillotine slicer or any other rapid severing system.
In the illustrated embodiment, use is made of a guillotine slicer.
The 3-4 tire rotating continuously and regularly, the two threads each wind up on its mandrel and the turns formed advance regularly and continuously on the conveyor belt 10. By modifying the time intervals at which the device of sectioning comes into action, the length of the wires leaving the mandrels is modified. The cutting of the two wires being simultaneous, the two lengths of wire are each time identical.
The machine frame comprises either a device of the gearbox type (reference 18) or any other mechanical and / or electrical or electronic system ensuring the rotation of the tire and the control of the isolating device, this command causing the isolating. wires for lengths varying from zero to the maximum specified above.
At the location of the single passage 13, still above but at the end of the conveyor belt, the vibrations of the walls of the passage cause the turns of the two son to begin to penetrate into one another. At this time, none of the threads must turn, but the two threads must be driven by a linear advancement movement, this movement being ensured by the conveyor belt.
On leaving the belt and the vibrating corridor, the two spiral wires pass between two rollers 16, the grooves of which are profiled to the outer shape of the double spiral of finished wire.
The passage between the knobs completes the complete penetration of the two series of turns into one another.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
Thus at the exit of the knurling wheels, the of, ux son are spiraled and twisted and the wire is in the form shown at 17.
Figure 2 shows how the separated wires first coiled are then brought together to form the twist coil.
If the pair of threads were unwound, it would be seen that they are in fact twisted, while by pulling on the ends of a section of double thread prepared by the machine as just described, the threads de-

tending and "së. spar.rit serià jàmajs- ni *, prdvoqûer de ryoezidE3."
It can thus be seen that this design of the machine allows continuous work, whatever the desired lengths of wire and that all the possible difficulties of adjustment in order to match the pitch of the preliminary twisting with the diameter of the winding turns. are eliminated.
Another advantage is that depending on the diameter of the tire and the construction details of the frame, one or more pairs of chucks can be placed around the tire, which gives the possibility of simultaneously removing one or more "tubes" of finished wires. (spiral and twisted), all with wires of the same lengths or variable lengths per pair of wires according to the control device of the disconnecting mechanism.
On leaving the meshing wheels, all that remains - if necessary - is to coat the "tube" with wire which has just been formed by means of a casing which will constitute a cocoon.
This cocoon can be produced by a paper tape, a canvas or any other material which can be wound, in a spiral or lengthwise around the tube. But it is easier to coat the tube using glue or quick-drying varnish. This coating can be done by spraying, the tube advancing on a conveyor chain, or by soaking the tube in a bath of the appropriate product.
Depending on the drying speed of the product used, it may or may not be necessary to provide an infrared ray, hot or cold air drying tunnel.
This question of drying is also a function of the speed of rotation of the tire, that is to say of the flow rate of the machine.
Since the machine is simple, a single supervisor is enough to operate it and to replace the spools of thread used.
