<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

The present invention relates to a positioning device and more particularly to a device for supporting a feeler element in precise alignment with an elongated element advancing longitudinally, such as a cable.
In the production of cables having cores covered with a metal shell and a plastic jacket, as disclosed in US Pat. No. 2,589,700 issued March 18, 1952 to HG Johnstone, the thickness of the jacket is plastic is measured at different radial positions on the cable, so that the extruder can be properly adjusted to produce a concentric jacket. Thickness measurements are normally obtained by measuring the capacitance between a probe or electrode supported by the sheath and the metal shell.
To obtain accurate capacitance measurements, it is necessary that the electrode be precisely designed and supported in precise alignment with the moving cable, so that the effective electric field between the electrode. and the core of the cable can be kept uniform. With cables having diameters exceeding 25.4 mm, the positioning of the electrode on the sheath is not critical, but considerable difficulties have however been encountered with cables of smaller dimensions, du. due to their high manufacturing speeds and relatively large variations in the electric field which occur for slight displacements between the cable and the electrode.
Previous attempts have been made with very little success to eliminate the relative displacement and misalignment between such feeler elements and the moving cables. For example, roller-type and polisher-type guides have been disposed before and after a fixed feeler element, with the feeler element being held along the center line of the guides.
However, the precision required in the alignment of the electrode could not be achieved with such arrangements due to the need to provide clearances in the guides (to adapt to irregularities in the outside diameter of the cables), and due to the inability of the guides to follow the curves and twists in the cable between the guides. Another disadvantage of these arrangements was that the guides had to be adjusted or replaced to accommodate different sizes of cables.
It is therefore the object of the present invention to precisely arrange a feeler element on elongated elements of different dimensions and which advance in order to ensure precise alignment thereon.
In accordance with the general features of the present invention, a feeler element such as an electrode is mounted on a carriage and is thereby maintained under operating conditions with an elongate member advancing longitudinally along a given path. The carriage can move freely on the support and alignment and self-adjusting means, disposed on opposite sides of the electrode and responsive to the instantaneous position of the advancing member, precisely position the carriage , and therefore the electrode, with respect to the part of the element advancing between the alignment means.
In a preferred embodiment, a resilient support urges the electrode on the carriage in operating conditions relative to the advancing member and alignment of the electrode is achieved by means of a pair of. Forked elements disposed on opposite sides of the electrode, the elements being pivotally mounted at their midpoint so as to rotate on the carriage along parallel axes perpendicular to the paths of the advancing element.
The ends of the elements straddle the advancing element and are held elastically in contact with its opposite ends, the carriage being free to move on its support both in a lateral translational movement, and also along both sides. mutually perpendicular axes, which in turn are perpendicular to the path of the advancing member, for the purpose of automatically and precisely aligning the electrode with the advancing member disposed at the same time.

temporarily between the two forked elements.
These and other features of the present invention will be more fully understood by the following detailed description of the present invention taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings in which: - Figure 1 is a side elevational view of the invention. a device comprising the general characteristics of the present invention; - Figure 2 is a plan view of the device of Figure 1 as seen along the plane of the line II-II thereof; and - Figure 3 is a view on a larger scale of the device of Figure 2, seen along the plane of line III-III.
Referring now to the drawings, an electrode 5 is mounted on the middle part of a carriage 6 which is pushed by a support arm 7 resiliently urged towards an elongated member, in this case a cable 8, advancing. longitudinally along a given path in the direction indicated by the arrow. The support arm 7 is pivotally mounted on an axis perpendicular to the path of the cable and can be mounted on a fixed element, or, in the case where it is desired to position the electrode 5 in different axial positions around the circumference of the cable, the arm can be pivotally mounted on a rotating annular gear 9.
The arm is returned by a spring 11 connected to an extension 12 of the annular gear and is provided with a counterweight 14 to neutralize the effects of gravity on the arm and on the carriage in the different ways. your angular positions of the ring gear. An electrode weight on the order of seven ounces has been found satisfactory for use with polyethylene sheathed cable.
The forked end 15 on the arm 7 pivotally mounted by means of the pins 16 on an insulated yoke 17, connects the arm 7 to the carriage 6.
This allows the caliper, and therefore the carriage 6, to be able to rotate about an axis passing through the pins 16 and perpendicular to the path of the cable. The middle portion of the yoke has a slit 18 extending transversely of the cable path, and the lower surface of the slotted portion is flat for sliding contact with the flat upper surface of the chain. - riot 6.
A cylindrical guide pin portion 21 forming part of a member 22 attached to the carriage, extends through the slot 18 to limit their lateral displacement of the carriage on the caliper, while also providing a pin. vot for the rotation of the carriage around an axis perpendicular to the axes of the two pivot pins 16 and also to the path of the cable. The diameter of the portion 21 is slightly less than the smallest width dimension of the slot, so as to provide a relative displacement between them. An enlarged upper portion 27 of member 22 holds the stirrup in place on the carriage 6, with sufficient clearance being provided between the enlarged portion and the stirrup 17 to allow the carriage to slide freely.
The carriage can therefore freely follow the advancing cable even when the cable deviates from a given path.
The electrode 5 is electrically isolated from the carriage 6 by means of an insulator 23 supporting the electrode in a metallic sheath member 24 attached to the lower part of the carriage 6. A shaft 25 connected to the electrode is separated. - tends coaxially with respect to the guide pin portion 21 of the element 22 and being supported in this portion by an insulator 26. The top of the shaft 25 is threaded so that the assembly of the electrode and the insulator can be rigidly bolted. A wire 29 is connected to the nut for the purpose of connecting the electrode to a test device, which is not part of the present invention. A cap 30 at the top of element 22 seals the electrode shaft 25 and the associated lead wire.
Two forked alignment elements 31 and 32 are pivotally mounted on the front and rear ends of the carriage 6 by means of the respective pins.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
tives 33 and 34 equally spaced with respect to the opposite sides of the electrode 5.
The parallel rollers 35 on the end portions of the elements, extend perpendicular to the cable path and straddle the advancing cable 80 The rollers are kept in contact with the cable by means of a spring 36 connected between the pins 45 and 46 which respectively extend from the median portions 37 and 38 of the alignment elements.
The alignment elements cause the carriage to slide and rotate on the yoke in accordance with the relative condition of the cable between the two alignment elements and thereby align the electrode only on the short portion of the cable which is momentarily disposed between the two alignment elements Since the carriage and the alignment elements are free to rotate and move when the carriage is moved away from the cable means are provided to facilitate mounting of the device on the cable.
Thus, the stop pins 43 and 44 on the middle portions 37 and 38, respectively, of the alignment elements, come into contact with the carriage 6, so that the released alignment elements will be slightly angularly displaced. view to facilitate the rotation of the elements, and there are provided tapered ends 39 extending outwardly of the cable path about 60 from the axes of the rollers 35, so that the two ends on each alignment element form an open "V" in order to receive and guide the cables with certainty between them, when the device is subsequently brought into contact with a cable. The alignment elements make the device automatically adjustable to different cable sizes, with a larger cable resulting in additional pivoting of the elements 31 and 32.
The rollers on each element are spaced apart a distance slightly greater than the largest diameter of the largest cable to be fitted.
The alignment of the shoe 40 parallel to the surface of the cable is achieved by means of a two-point suspension, one of the points being the point of contact between the electrode 5 and the cable, and the other point being that between a pad 40 extending from the pivot pin 34 of the alignment member 32 and the cable The electrode 5 is provided with a curved contact surface and, if it was not provided a floating assembly free from a second suspension point, the electrode would be unstable due to the sway caused by the weight of the cable on the alignment elements.
However, with the shoe 40 and a spring 41 connected between the caliper 17 and the arm 7, a clean cut is produced on the caliper so as to rotate the caliper and the carriage in a clockwise direction, such as. 'can be seen in Figure 1, and around the pivot of the caliper, so that the pad 40 will be kept in certain contact with the cable which is moving The lifting force exerted at this moment by the arm 7 is established so as to be on the order of 2 to 3 ounces, while the force exerted by the spring 11 on the arm in a direction opposite to this lift force is set to about 7 ounces.
As a result, both the electrode 5 and the pad 40 are held on the cable, thereby stabilizing the alignment of the pad parallel to the moving cable.
The structure described above therefore allows the displacement of the electrode following a translational movement in planes perpendicular to one another in order to adapt to the horizontal or vertical displacement of the element which advances. relative to the device and it also allows the pivoting of the electrode about axes in planes perpendicular to each other and perpendicular to the path of the cable, in order to adapt to curves or a slight - re torsion of the moving element.
In this way, the device provides complete freedom of movement while supporting the electrode in a stabilized position parallel to the surface of the cable which advances and maintains the electrode in alignment according to the instantaneous state of the two elements. 'alignment.
Since the device provides a high degree of precision in the arrangement of the electrode on the cable, the design requirements for the electrode itself are less critical than otherwise.

It should be understood that the arrangements described above are merely illustrative of the applications of the principles of the present invention. Many other arrangements can be easily devised by skilled technicians and which will realize the principles of the present invention and will fall within their minds. and within its reach.
