<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

The operation of a blast furnace, in which large tons are processed, needs to be closely monitored in order to ensure metallurgical efficiency and an optimum economic balance. It is therefore necessary to know in particular the composition and the temperature of the gases, the distribution of the load over the section of the throat, as well as the mode of descent of the load.
Composition and temperature of the top gases are most often checked by periodically taking samples from the gas outlets and noting their temperature. However, we can only see the composition and the temperature of a fluid made up of the gases collected from the various parts of the section of the furnace.
There are also instruments for continuously measuring the composition and temperature of the gases in the upper part of the load separately for different regions of its entire section, generally along a line coinciding with the radius' or the internal diameter. of the stove. These measurements are interesting. But the instruments used to carry them out leave much to be desired.
Indeed, these instruments immersed in the load must be cooled with water, resulting in significant loss of calories. rMoreover, they are bulky and therefore difficult to assemble and disassemble.
On the other hand, so-called probe devices are usually used to control the descent of the load. However, these probes only allow the upper level of the charge to be measured in one place.
The device according to the present invention has, over all those mentioned above, the advantage of indicating the shape of the metallurgical process much better and of being of very simple construction. It allows you to take gas samples, temperature measurements and load level measurements at the same time.
The essential feature of the present invention is that a measuring pipe, which is introduced into the throat like the well-known solid probing rod, is not straight like the latter probe, but is bent twice. , at its lower part, so as to form an upper part, a middle part and a lower part or measuring branch, the distance from the upper part to the measuring branch being a function of the importance of the angle of the two elbows.
The upper part of said measuring pipe, which can be rotated and moved in height, comprises a bearing preferably placed on the tank of the throat.
Since the length of the middle part of the measuring pipe is substantially equal to the radius of the cross section of the load and the axis of rotation of this pipe is close to the circumference of the load, the lower part or measuring branch described by pivoting an arc of a circle which passes through the axis of the furnace and on which any number of measurements can be carried out.
If a measuring pipe, as described above, is arranged at each end of a straight line coinciding with the internal diameter of the furnace, two arcs of a circle can be described. In this case the composition and the temperature of the gases can be controlled almost perfectly from the axis to the edge of the furnace.
An important feature of the invention lies in the fact that the measuring branches make it possible to determine the upper level of the load in all their positions.
We know that it is important for the blast furnace to know and influence the phenomena occurring during charging.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
In the past, the blast furnace was only able to conclude that the loading needed to be modified from the behavior of the furnace itself, for example the conditions under which it caught the wind.
The profile of the top of the load is very important for the load. Therefore, a particular advantage of the device according to the present invention consists in that this device makes it possible to determine at any time the profile of the upper part of the furnace, in particular any modifications of this profile, and to clearly follow the incidence of any measurements in this profile, whether they are measurements concerning the loading (modification of, the order of loading of the materials, variation of the upper level of the load, for example) and the admission of the wind or any other measures (modifications of the melt bed, for example).
In addition, the device according to the invention makes it possible to determine the exact rate of descent of the load at the various locations of the section of the furnace.
The accompanying drawing represents an example of implementation of the device which is the subject of the present invention.
In Figure 1 of this drawing, are designated by 1 the top of the blast furnace tank, by 2 the top tank and by 3 the top cover in its closed position.
A measuring pipe 4, which can be turned and moved in height, passes through the closing horn 5 of the blast furnace and the platform 6 of the top.
It is fitted with a 7. @ cable gland
This pipe is bent twice. Its axis of rqtation 6 is located at the circumference of la'charge. Its lower end 9 is lowered onto the carriage.

ge, and this in the center "of it.
At 10 is indicated the rest position of the measuring pipe.
Figure 2 of the drawing is a section, horizontal through the furnace, above the load, along the line A - B of figure 1. It shows the stroke of the measuring branch 9 of the pipe 4.
The upper end of the pipe 4 (not shown) is preferably guided by a small carriage which moves on a slide or any other vertical part.
The orifice of the measuring branch 9 may be fitted with a strainer serving to stop the substances in the load.
The pipe 4 should be actuated by means of an automatic control, this pipe having been lowered, after loading, to a sufficient level so that it can pivot below the bell of the throat. Then, it is brought into the desired measuring position, then lowered enough so that its lower end comes to rest on the load.
The various pivoting positions are preferably adjusted according to a well-defined program, the measurements then being taken in about ten minutes over the entire section of the furnace.
After the measuring pipe has descended onto the load, a gas sample is sucked in or discharged through this pipe, if the pressure in the furnace is sufficient.
A thermoelectric couple is placed at the lower end of the measuring pipe, in a metal protective tube which protrudes a little or else in the measuring pipe. This torque is intended to indicate the temperature of the gases at this location.
The swivel and lowering positions of the measuring pipe are
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
recorded by recording instruments.
This pipe, which must remain lowered for a certain time, for example a minute, for taking the gas sample and for measuring the temperature, can occupy this position until shortly before the next loading. It then indicates the rate of descent and the temperature variation at this point.
At the end of the measurements or at the end of a time determined according to a program, the measuring pipe is raised to the position of free pivoting, then moved by the measuring branch 9 towards the periphery of the mouthpiece and raised to the position. of rest, where it can be purged with compressed air or high pressure gas.
The new measuring device can operate continuously, which allows the composition and temperature of the gases to be constantly monitored, as well as the upper level and the desoente rate of the charge, over the entire section of the furnace. However, it may be sufficient to only run it periodically.
If the throat temperature is high, it may be necessary to cool the measuring hoses.
