<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

On comprendra que dans ce cas une partie des flocons de fibres sera enlevée du second rouleau 2 du train de cardagetraitée pour enlever les graterons et ensuite placée sur le troisième rouleau 13 du traino En même temps que ce second jeu d'éléments d'enlè- vement de graterons disposés en-dessous des rouleaux de cardage, un autre rouleau diviseur 14 est monté dans l'arc de sommet entre les deuxième et troisième rou- leaux de cardage 2;
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

The present invention relates to carding machines.
One problem that arises in the processing of wool fibers is the removal of cocklebur and other impurities. These impurities should be removed before they are broken up into smaller particles by the disintegrating action of the carding yarns and this removal should be accomplished before a carded fabric is subjected to other treatment.
It is known to mount in the front of combed wool carding machines an operating roller for detaching a portion of a wool flake from a carding roll or unifier drum and subjecting it to a cleaning process. elimination of cocklebursts using one or two Morel rollers.
A second operating roller can be employed to pick up the remaining part of the flake from the same carding roll or drum by means of a brush and another Mo- rel roller, and then subject the two parts of the flake. the usual carding process It is also known to take part of a flake from a carding roll or drum by means of an operating roller, to subject this part of the flake to a process of eliminating cocklebur by using a Morel roller and joining this part of the treated flake with the other parts of the flakes which remain on the surface of said carding roller.
In both of these arrangements the cocklebur removal processes employing Morel rollers actually precede a proper carding operation on a carding machine and therefore relate exclusively to the cocklebur removal, and in one case return the treated flake portion. to the same roller in another part of the periphery.
The term "Morel" roll as used herein is understood to include not only the well known type of roll which is designed to receive fibers such that cocklebur or other impurities adhering thereto. tend to be exposed on the periphery of the roll, thus being accessible by means of beating the cocklebur, but also include any type of roll and carding material capable of achieving the same purpose. The term "flakes" is also implied to refer to wicks to small masses and agglomerates of fibers.
The expression "carding rolls" is also understood to include the so-called gatherer drum rolls.
The main object of the present invention is to improve the cocklebur removal process by integrating it into the carding operation with the specific object of producing, under progressively favorable processing conditions, more carded fabric. devoid of cockleburs'o @
To this end9 there is provided a method of treating wool fibers during a carding operation, consisting in supplying flakes of wool to a train of at least two carding rolls which cooperate with one another, and which rotate in directions opposite to each other. successively increased speeds,
the second carding roll stripping the first, subjecting the flakes to the action of a dividing roll in working cooperation with the first carding roll ;, subjecting the portion of fibers retained by the dividing roll to a process elimination of cocklebursts, to place this treated portion of fibers on the second carding roll so that the latter carries it by rotating beyond 1 arc where it strips the portions of the flakes that had been left by the dividing roll on the first carding roll.
The method may include the step of removing a portion of the flock from the second of the two carding rolls and returning it to the first carding roll for the purpose of repeating the aforementioned process of removing the cocklebur.
The method may also include removing some of the treated flakes from the second carding roll and subjecting these to an additional cocklebur removal process and then depositing them on another roll of cardboard. carding which follows and which is in co-operation of stripping with the second roll.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
The invention comprises an apparatus having a train of at least two carding rollers in stripping engagement, means for driving the rollers in opposite directions at successively increased speeds, a controlled dividing roller mounted. to be able to work in engagement with the first of the carding rolls, a stripping means for transferring fibers from the divider to a Morel roller, a cocklebur beater associated with the Morel roller,
and stripping means for transferring the treated fibers from the Morel roll onto the second carding roll for transport beyond the arc. there is co-operation in stripping between the two carding rolls and where the flake portions on the first carding roll are transferred to the second carding roll. The apparatus may include a second dividing roll mounted to be capable, by operator action, of removing a portion of the fibers from the second carding roll and causing their transfer to the first carding roll for further operation. repeated treatment of cocklebur removal.
The apparatus may comprise a train of at least three cardboard rollers controlled at successively increasing speeds and each stripping the preceding one, dividing rollers mounted one above and one below each arc of cooperation of any two carding rolls and in a manner which allows one to be in working engagement with a cargo roll and the other in working and stripping engagement respectively with two other adjoining carding rolls, and at least two sets of cocklebur remover elements, the complete arrangement being such that the fibers can be removed from a carding roll and processed for cocklebur removal by a set of elements, then deposited on another carding roll and some of the fibers have been passed,
for an additional treatment of cocklebur removal in the second set of elements. Referring now to the drawings. appended in which two constructions are shown schematically:
Figo 1 is a side view of two carding rolls with a set of cocklebur eliminators, while ,,
Fig 2 is a side view of three carding rolls with two sets of cocklebur eliminators.
In a particular basic arrangement shown in figo 1, two carding rollers 1, 2 are mounted side by side in a frame 3 so that their surfaces are very close to each other, in so-called cooperation. "carding", and with any known means for driving the rollers at different speeds, so that the second roll 2 rotates at a surface speed high enough to be capable of stripping all the fibers from the roll 1 preceding it.
It is understood that the direction of rotation of the rollers is such that the next roll turns in a direction opposite to that of the previous roll, that is, assuming the first one rotates clockwise , as indicated, the second will rotate counterclockwise with the first card lining 4 inclined and directed respectively in the direction of their rotation o A controlled dividing roller 5 or 6 is respectively mounted between the crown arcs and base, one of the two adjacent carding rolls and, among these dividing rolls, the top one 5 is mounted so as to work in cooperation with the roller 1 while being disengaged from the roller 2,
but the divider 6 works in cooperation with the carding roll 2 and cooperates in "stripping" with the other roll 1a The dividing roll 6 rotating clockwise, as shown, the bald fibers of the roll carding roller 2 will be transported downwards and then upwards towards the carding roller 1 which will strip the fibers and transport them by turning again towards the dividing roller 5. On the other hand, the divider 6 can be rotated counterclockwise and the fibers it carries are fed back to the carding roll 1 over a shorter arc from the periphery of the dividing roll.
A means such as a rotating brush 7 is mounted in engagement with the
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
first top dividing roller 5 to remove the fibers and transfer them to a Morel roller 8 with which a rotary beater 9 is associated to remove the cocklebursts; the treated fibers entrained around the Morel roller are stripped from its periphery by a stripping roller 10 and deposited on the second adjacent carding roller 2.
To accomplish this task the brush 7, the Morel roller 8 and its associated stripper 10 must be rotated at gradually increasing surface speeds from that of the dividing roller 5 from which the fibers are stripped until the treated fibers are deposited on the carding roll 2 which will rotate at a higher surface speed than the stripper 10 which deposits the fibers from the Morel roll onto the carding roll The cocklebur removed from the Morel roll 8 are deposited in a suitably placed plate 11, which may be provided with an automatic means or the like for removing cocklebursts. The means 7 and 10 can be a brush or any suitable type of stripper.
The treated fibers deposited on the second carding roll 2 in the train are carried by rotating past its line of stripping cooperation with the first carding roll 19 where the fibers left on the surface of the first carding roll will be. also picked up and drawn all around the second carding roll towards the bottom divider roll 6 which is in cooperation with it.
The fibers retained by this bottom dividing roller are stripped by the first carding roller 1, and thus return to it, as explained above. By this means the two parts of the flake have been subjected to a first carding action and , therefore, as they are of reduced size and a little more slightly open they are once again drawn around the first carding roll and presented for repeated treatment under better conditions to the cocklebur removers already mentioned. It is understood that by placing this bottom dividing roll 6 closer to or further from the second carding roll 2,
more or less flakes can be retained with this roll and returned to the first carding roll 1 for repeated grateronso removal processing Or, the divider roll 6 can be moved to an inoperative position if necessary .
The fibers entrained around the carding roll 2 can be removed by any known means, for example at point 12, in particular by a pick-up roll or by any other suitable roll of a carding machine.
As can be seen in figo2, an additional set of cocklebur remover elements 5, 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11 are placed between the second oardage roll 2 and a third carding roll 13 in the box. train ±} and these elements are arranged below the axes of the carding rollers.
It will be understood that in this case a part of the fiber flakes will be removed from the second roll 2 of the cardage train treated to remove the cocklebur and then placed on the third roll 13 of the train At the same time as this second set of removal elements. With cocklebursts arranged below the carding rollers, another dividing roll 14 is mounted in the crown arch between the second and third carding rolls 2;
, 13, in working co-operation with the third carding roll and being able to be placed and controlled as previously mentioned for the dividing roll 60 Here too the fibers can be transferred back to the second of the carding rolls in a train for repeated removal of the grateronsees or they can pass undisturbed on the third carding roll at will.
It will be appreciated that by selective placement and engagement of the respective dividing rollers 6 and 14, the fibers of a flake can be directed at will to the cocklebur removal treatment once or several times in a more or less state. carded, that is to say open in order to obtain a very neat fabric of fibers, while maintaining the fiber lengths by the application of the combination of gradual operations of opening and removing the graterons
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
The invention can be modified by increasing the number of carding rolls in a train and by the location of the dividing rollers between the arcs of the roll train,
and also by the location of the grateronso removal element units. Two sets of grateron removal elements are normally considered to be the maximum required for all types of fibers.
The invention can be designed so that any of the dividers can be able to be driven in either of the two directions of rotation and so that any of the carding rolls!) Dividers) brushes and Morel rollers can be mounted in an adjustable manner with respect to the cooperating elements.
It is also feasible to adjust the relative and absolute speeds of the rollers or other elements, and the drive means for the carding roll train and at least for the dividing rollers can be such that, singly or in combination, their driving means. speed can be changed.
