<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>

The present invention relates to a lubricant seal formed between two parts rotating with respect to one another, and it can be used in particular for retaining a lubricant inside a bearing or for excluding therefrom. foreign bodies when there are relative axial, radial and oscillatory movements, combined with each other.
The invention can be used in particular in ground drilling bits of the rotary wheel type, and it will be described here in its application to a device of this type,
It will be understood, however, that the invention is not limited to this particular application and. that it can be used in any
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
device when we can take advantage of the benefits it brings.
Rotary wheel type ground drilling bits usually have wheels mounted on axles with the interposition of anti-friction bearings for support, or the loads imposed on them during normal drilling operations.
The bearings are filled with lubricant at the time of assembly but, since these bits usually rotate in an ambient medium formed by a fluid, circulating violently agitated, consisting of sludge introduced 'or by-a fluid contaminated by from drilling waste, the lubricant is quickly contaminated, and it is possibly completely replaced by the circulation fluid and by the abrasive materials that it contains. This results in rapid deterioration of the bearings, which reduces the efficiency of the bit and its useful life,
It has already been proposed to use a lubricating device for the bit, in order to constantly add lubricant as that which is in the bearing escapes towards the ambient medium.
It has also been proposed to create lubricant seals between the parts of the rotating bit relative to each other.
The solutions proposed have not been satisfactory, and any contamination of the lubricant has been found to be extremely undesirable.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
One of the first steps of the invention is therefore to create a lubrication system which ensures the retention of the appropriate lubricant in a bearing at all times.
Another object of the invention is to provide a lubricant seal which retains the lubricant inside the bearing and prevents the penetration of a contaminating substance into this bearing. /
The invention also aims to create a lubricant seal for maintaining the seal between the rotating members one by one. in relation to the other, even if there is a composite movement of one of them in relation to the other.
Yet another object of the invention is to create between the members rotating with respect to one another an annular seal established and arranged so as to follow all the relative movements between the members and to retain the lubricant. inside the bearing, while preventing the ingress of a contaminating substance.
The invention also relates to an annular seal that can float freely in the space provided for this purpose, and. providing the desired results mentioned above.
The invention further relates to a bearing combined with a sealed seal in which is provided a lubricant reserve chamber, containing a sufficient quantity of lubricant to compensate for the hairy variations generated inside the bearing as a result of shifts
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
relitives of its components, and to add lubricant to the bearing in case of loss of lubricai from it.
The description which follows, given with reference to the accompanying drawings, given without limitation, will make it possible to better understand the invention.
Fig. 1 is a sectional view through a system of knurls of a cone drill bit according to the invention.
Fig. 2 is a detail view on a larger scale showing the lubricant seal and its relation to the thumb wheel and to the bit head, between which it has a seal.

As shown in fig. 1, the bit comprises a head 2 comprising several arms directed downwards, one of these arms being represented at 3. Each arm carries a shaft 4, which. is integral with it and which is .directed inward and downward, in the direction of the axis of the bit.
The head 2 has an internal chamber 5,

thus obtains anti-friction bearings..8 and 9. ' which support the greater part of the load exerted on the wheel 7, - while the friction bearing provided between the guide pin and the wheel 2.supports the load exerted on the axis of rotation of the bit or at its' neighborhood '
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
immediate:
-At the same time, the r @ @ements to bill @ s
9 support the axial loads exerted on the wheel and the stop pad 14 serves to support the outward thrust 'loads' exerted on the wheel.
A bore 15. starts from the outside of the arm
3 and extends to a point on the guideway of the ball bearing 9. This construction allows the mounting of the wheel 7. on the shaft 4 while the roller bearing 8 , is already mounted. The balls 9 are then introduced into place through the bore 15 until the ball bearing. 9¯ either, complete. The pin 16 is then introduced into the bore ¯15; in order to keep the balls in their guide.
This axis is fixed in place for example by depositing weld metal in the end of the bore, 'A reserve of lubricant intended for the bearings or bearings which have just been described is provided in the chamber 17' fitted in there. branch 3 of the trephine. The lower end of this chamber communicates with the bore 15 and with countersinks in the shaft 16, so that the lubricant can flow relatively freely to the bearings. The lubricant channels include a bore 18 provided axially to the shaft, e 4, so that the lubricant can also freely reach .la thrust pad, 14 and, the neighboring friction bearing formed by the guide pin.
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
The lubricant, which is in the chamber 17 is surmounted by a piston. 19. Able to slide axially in this chamber. The extreme ,. The upper chamber of the chamber is closed by a stopper 10, which is held in place in an appropriate manner and in which a vent 20 is provided.
An important feature of the invention is that the arrangement described
EMI7.1
above is combined with a sealing ring 2l, Interposed between the surface 28 m, born on the base of the knob 7 and the shoulder 22. directed inward and provided on the arm
3 of the bit. Note that the sealing ring 21 is constituted by a continuous ring
EMI7.2
which surrounds the end of the shaft'4. and, as explained in more detail. further on, this ring
EMI7.3
is arranged so as to exeroar'une pressure on the surface 28 of the wheel 1 and on the shoulder 22 of the arm 3 of the bit, and to .réalls'er a satl.sfalsante seal therewith.
Do p ié.rence, the Internal periphery 'of the etanoheity ring 21 has a diameter tw, 1. that a small amount of play remains present between the ring and the periphery 24 of the shaft 4, as is clearly visible in fig. 2. From
EMI7.4
even the outer periphery 2.5. 'of the baueYdé. Tanchejité 21 has a diameter 'such' that it leaves a radial play with the shoulder 26 directed inwards., provided at the base of the wheel 7.
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
In other words, the sealing ring 21. is arranged, with respect to: .. @ neighboring bodies, so as to provide a limited radial floating effect, which contributes to the. maintaining an appropriate seal.
The bits used for drilling the ground are subjected to very high stresses.
For example, 11 'is not unusual to encounter a static load or a weight of 18 to'
32 tons applied to a tricone bit of 22.2 cm diameter. The resulting stresses are increased as a result of the large amplitude impact stresses, which are due to the fact that the bits often work under "severe" conditions, particularly when drilling hard ground.
These extreme conditions are at the origin of a complex movement of the wheel 2. in relation to the shaft
4, and this movement is amplified as the wear increases, a displacement component is directed axially to the shaft. At the same time, there is an oscillating rotational movement of the wheel relative to the shaft. Therefore, the seal ring 21 must be constructed and arranged in such a way that it follows every movement of the surfaces facing the bit head and the roll.
These relative displacements can occur with extreme rapidity, and with each
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
displacement results in a volumetric variation of the speaking space occupied by the
For this reason, the channels provided for the lubricant must have widely calculated dimensions, in order to allow its free flow. The piston must also be able to move freely downwards.
In order to allow the small volumetric variations at high speed of the lubricant in the bearings and to compensate for the inertia of the piston 19, the piston head 27 has its piston head 27 in the form of a flexible diaphragm wavy.
The sealing ring 21 has a special construction, so. to achieve .. 'constant positive sealing in, all'. the circumstances between surfaces 22 and 28.
This ring is generally in the form of a truncated cone; it must 'have' sufficient axial elasticity and it must be able to follow each movement of the wheel 7 relative to the arm 3 of the bit. Sealing rings have been shown in detail in Figs. 3 and 4.
. Each of the seal rings shown is made up. by a composite strip, comprising an internal ring or core 30, 30 '(Fies. 3 and 4) of steel or of another elastic material, in the form of a truncated cone. To facilitate its variable axial displacement on its circumference,
<Desc / Clms Page number 10>
the ring 30 has radial slots 31 terminated at their ends by circular orifices 32. Thus, each finger
33 can undergo limited independent displacement. in the axial direction of the sealing ring.
The inner ring 30 is embedded in a suitable waterproof material 36, and this ring and this waterproof material are preferably joined together to form a unitary assembly, although this is not necessary. The ring. Is profiled on the outside so as to form axially opposed annular ribs 34 and 35 on its internal and external peripheries, these ribs cooperating with the arm 3 of the bit and with the wheel 2 to produce tight joints. radially spaced.
As already stated, the material 36 should be of such a nature as to be impermeable to neighboring liquids, and it should also be chemically inert to these liquids, as well as capable of maintaining an effective seal with the surface with which it cooperates. . Such a material exists, for example, among various rubbers and synthetic plastics of the oil resistant type.
The shape of the seal ring shown in Fig. 4 is the same as that which has just been described, except that the internal ring
30 '' is deformed to form alternating ribs and grooves 37 and 38.
(this form of sealing ring also has the

also obtained, if desired, by dimensional control, forming the heel 23 'of a material having a higher or lower elasticity than the remainder of the material surrounding the core.
With this embodiment 'of the invention, it will be noted that a sufficiently strong pressure exerted on the side of the sealing ring in contact with - the lubricant, displaces the lip or rib. 35 to the outside, and allows a small amount of lubricant to escape. On the other hand, a sufficiently high pressure exerted on the outside of the seal ring may move the lip or rib 34 away from the surface 22. .
However,. : the heel 23 'then serves to prevent the penetration of a contaminating substance into the bearing. The sealing ring thus works in the manner of a check valve to prevent the penetration of contaminating materials. - @ mination.
Although the seal ring 21 shown has the shape of a cup or a truncated cone, it will be understood that this particular shape.
Here is not imperative and that the invention also relates to the use of an elastic sealing ring arranged so as to be able to effectively fulfill the desired role, even if there is a relative movement. complex between the elements of the bearing,
The details d .; embodiment can be modified, in the field of technical equivalences, without departing from the invention.
