The present invention relates to flexible couplings which provide a certain degree of flexibility to torsion, between drive shafts and driven shafts, and also comprises a torsional braking device of the friction, hydraulic or viscous fluid type.
Such a coupling is described in the specification of our British patent? 692.954 and comprises a pair of resilient members fixed to surfaces facing the drive members and driven, spaced from each other by devices providing anchoring, for the driving members and the driven members of a brake system of the friction, hydraulic or viscous fluid type.
In the specification mentioned above it has been described that it is desirable to obtain for a positive drive the most permissible movement possible of the elastic members and a preferred embodiment of the coupling is provided with elongated grooves. in which engage the studs of 1 control member and an adjacent part of the coupling.
It now appears that the utility of a coupling of the type in question can be increased if the torsional stiffness of the resilient members can be increased as they approach the end of their tolerated distortion stroke.
According to the present invention, a flexible coupling composed of a pair of elastic members fixed to surfaces facing the drive members and driven and separated from each other by a device ensuring anchoring. for driving and driven components, a hydraulic friction or viscous fluid type braking system is provided with a series of elastic damping stops rigidly fixed directly (or indirectly) to intervals spaced apart angularly to the driving member or to the driven member of the coupling, said stops having a disposition such that they come into contact with a series of complementary metal stops carried by the member of the coupling. drive or by the driven organ as the case may be,
thanks to which the normal torsional rigidity of said elastic members is increased when they are deflected towards the limit of their admissible stroke.
In preferred embodiments, the resilient cushioning stops may be carried by an extended portion of one of the two annular plates which enclose the braking device and the metal stops may be attached to a single annular plate. tee on the driven organ; however, different embodiments of the coupling may be suitable for varying the position of the stops.
This part of the invention and the others are included in one embodiment of a flexible coupling in order to transmit the motive force of an I.C.E. (internal combustion engine) with a driven shaft, a form which will be described in detail, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Fig. 1 is a central vertical section of a coupling and a portion of drive and driven shafts.
Figo 2 a section along the line II-II of Fig. 1.
Control shaft 1 of an I.C.E. (internal combustion engine) consists of a flange 2 which is bolted to one face of a divergent frustoconical housing 3, enclosing a shaft end 4 in alignment with the control shaft. A pair of two annular plates 5 and 6 concentrated at the end of the shaft 4 and comprising a braking device at the
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
viscous fluid torsion, is bolted to the front end of housing 3.
The braking device comprises two sets of plates A and B, one of which (B) is fixed to the annular plates and is interleaved with the second set of plates (A) which is fixed on a sleeve 7 rotating around the end of 'tree 4.
The annular plate 6 extends beyond the periphery of the housing 3 and carries a series of studs 8 at angular intervals above which there are cylindrical rubber dampers, 9.
A rubber ring 10 fixed to the front face of this plate 6 is also connected to a hollow annular plate 11 which is bolted to the flange 12 of a driven shaft 13 and to the bushing 7 mentioned above.
A similar ring 14 is attached to the rear face of the other annular plate 5 and to a second hollow annular plate 15 which is also bolted to the socket 7.
The flange 12 of the driven shaft which is axially concentric with the drive shaft 1 and the shaft end 4, carries at its periphery a disc 16 which is provided with a series of metal stops 17.
The metal stops 17 are complementary to the studs 8 and to the dampers 9 mentioned above and are placed in such a way as to allow a predetermined angular relative movement between the plate 6 carrying the studs and the disc 16, before the dampers do not. trent in contact with them.
In operation a typical uneven driving force is applied from the drive shaft, through the frustoconical housing 3, to the plates 5 and 6 containing the viscous fluid brake. The force is transmitted by means of the elastic rings 10 and 14 which are distorted around the end of the shaft 4 according to a stroke determined by the variations in intensity of the force, to the flange 12 of the driven shaft.
If the intensity of the driving force exceeds at any given moment that which causes the full tolerated torsion of the elastic rings, the rubber dampers 9 come into contact with the metal stops 17 of the disc 16 and thus provide elastic resistance. increased to said intense force.
It is understood that the invention is not limited to the details of the specific example described but that it may vary without departing from the scope of the following claims.
