The present invention relates to a process for rendering ferruginous smoke or "red smoke" (that is to say a mixture of iron oxide with a little magnesium oxide and slag forming products) harmless. refining in the wind or by oogone and it allows to obtain a considerable result by a simple means.
We know he is. It is hardly possible to render the ferruginous smoke which forms when blowing with air or oxygen harmless. We have, it is true, made great efforts to capture the famous iron ore or to reduce the quantity. However, we could not obtain, until this day, any marked success.
The invention starts from the idea that it is, of course, possible to render the famous ironstone harmless if

it is possible to transform said smoke (which is given off during refining, in particular by oxygen) to bring it in a form allowing it to be easily separated from the evacuated gases. According to the invention, the ferruginous smoke is transformed, by the application or maintenance of reducing conditions, into metallic iron, or at least into other types of iron oxide, so that one can, by means of a magnetic route, separate from the evacuated gases, the iron, or these oxides. The invention can, for example, be implemented by blowing, in the vicinity of the surface of the bath,
carbon oxide or other gas having a reducing action. The oxygen is brought immediately above the surface of the bath and, in a zone situated above and in which the smoke still has the temperature necessary for the reduction, the reducing gas is introduced in excess (advantageously in the form of of CO). to accelerate the rate of reduction, it is advisable to have, above the converter or the refining tank, a starting duct in the form of a chimney in which is, on the one hand, suspended, when the agent refining is introduced from above, an oxygen lance movable in the axial direction and, on the other hand, arranged the conduit for the reducing gas.
When it is not desired to bring the reducing gas immediately above the upper surface of the bath, it is possible, in accordance with the invention, to operate as follows: in a dome arranged above the converter or the refining tank is suspended, movable in the axial direction, only the oxygen lance. The gas having a reducing action is introduced, at a suitable distance, into the outlet duct and brought to a temperature making it possible to reduce the ferruginous smoke. The necessary temperature can be obtained, for example, by means of a hot flame burning in the cavity, a flame which maintains at a sufficiently high temperature both the reducing gas and the ferruginous smoke.
This method is also applicable in a manner

advantageous when the metal bath is not blown with oxygen but by wind or air enriched with oxygen.
In the cases explained above, it may be advantageous and appropriate to heat the reducing gas. This is particularly the case in the last mentioned process. It is also advantageous to introduce the gas tangentially to the main stream.
As a drafting gas, sufficient quantities of industrial gases containing carbon monoxide are available,
It is particularly advantageous to use, as reducing gas, blast furnace gas obtained during. the en.oeuvre of Belgian Patent No. 546,530. It is, moreover, advantageous to remove its CO2 content from the blast furnace gas thus obtained, or any other usual blast furnace gas, according to the process described in the patent Belgian No. 539 949,
The purification of the exhaust gases does not present any difficulties, since iron can, in a known manner, be recovered in these gases.
