<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
(sauf le bord arrondi qui peut être prévu comme montré aux figurer 10 à 12) étant plus mince que le couvercle 7, de sorte -que ce der- nier et le manchon 6 sont relativement rigides comparativement au rebord d'étanchéité 8;
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>

The present invention relates to a closure device for a container, this device comprising a cover part and a sleeve part with engagement means for connection with corresponding engagement means provided around the container. opening of the container, and an annular frustoconical rim, elastically deformable, capable of forming a tight seal between the closure device and the container and formed integrally with one of these elements.
The main object of the invention is to provide a closure device of this type, which is of simple construction and.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
by which a suitable sealing effect is obtained. According to the invention, the sealing rim, which is substantially conical on the outside as well as on the inside, has a free edge, points inward and is substantially more elastic than the member from which it projects. According to one embodiment of the invention, the sealing rim projects from the lower end of the sleeve part and is substantially thinner than the latter part, the interior of the annular sealing rim and conical forming an obtuse angle with the interior of the. sleeve part.
According to another preferred embodiment, the conical and annular sealing rim projects from the lower side of the cover part of the closure device, the inner cone of the rim forming an acute angle with this lower side of the cover part. In yet another embodiment of the invention, the tapered inner side of the sealing rim constitutes the upper part of the inner side of the container and, in this embodiment, the upper and free inner edge of the sealing rim. sealing, in the closed position of the device, adds the underside of the cover portion. In using some materials for the thin sealing rim, the free end of the sealing rim should be rounded in order to reinforce the rim.
A suitable cone angle of the sealing rim is about 30 to 120.
The invention is illustrated by the accompanying drawings showing various embodiments.
FIG. 1 is a vertical section of the upper part of a container, the opening of which is closed by a screw cap with a sealing device according to the invention.
Figure 2 is a top plan view of the screw cap.
Figure 3 is a vertical section through a neck of

bottle, comprising a screw cap according to a second embodiment.
Figure 4 is a top plan view of this second embodiment.
Figure 5 is a vertical section corresponding to Figure 3 and illustrating a third embodiment.
Figures 6 and 'are vertical sections of a fourth embodiment with the closure device in different positions.
Figure 8 is a top plan view of this fourth embodiment. a container with a closure device
Figure 9 is a vertical section of another construction and showing a sealing rim similar to that of Figures 6 to 8.
Figures 10 to 12 are cross sections showing various shapes of the sealing rim.
In Figures 1 and 2, in which the closure device consists of a screw cap, the reference 1 designates the upper part of the container around the opening 2 of which a collar 3, having an internal thread 4. This collar having a shoulder 5 forming a seat for the screw cap is fixed to the container. This plug comprises a cylindrical sleeve portion 6 having an external thread and formed integrally with a cover and handle portion 7, in the form of a disc, while the lower end of the sleeve portion is formed with a annular sealing rim $ having tapered inner and outer surfaces.
The free edge of this frustoconical sealing rim is directed inwardly towards the longitudinal axis of the cylindrical sleeve part 6. The conical interior of the sealing rim forms an obtuse angle with the sleeve. 'inside the sleeve 6. The sealing rim is substantially
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
thinner than the sleeve 6, and its material is of such a nature that the sealing rim .. which is cast integrally with the screw cap is elastically deformable to a substantially greater degree than the sleeve 6 which is relatively rigid. Some plastics, such as polythene, have properties suitable for this purpose.
When the screw cap is screwed in place, the tapered exterior of the resilient sealing rim 8 will elastically butt the seat 5. The elasticity of the rim provides an effective seal and, when the screw cap is tight, it is not exposed to be easily released by vibration.
Figures 3 and 4 show the invention applied to a screw cap for a bottle or other container. This lid comprises a portion forming a lid 7 and a portion forming a sleeve 6 designed to encircle the neck 4 of a bottle 1 or other container and provided with engagement means consisting of an internal thread 9 which is screwed onto. an external thread 10 of the neck. The lower side of the cover 7 is provided with an annular rim 8 of elastic type and of frustoconical shape with a section decreasing downwards. The thickness of this rim preferably decreases in the direction of its free end. The conical interior of this rim forms an acute angle with the underside of the cover 7, and the tapered outer side of the rim is designed to abut the mouth of the neck at 5.
When the screw cover is screwed into place, the outer side of the elastic sealing rim 8 is pushed against the seat, so that a tight seal is obtained. This closure head can be made of a plastic material, for example of the type mentioned above, -aU less the lower and internal part of the sealing rim.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
(except the rounded edge which can be provided as shown in figures 10 to 12) being thinner than the cover 7, so that the latter and the sleeve 6 are relatively rigid compared to the sealing rim 8;
The embodiment of FIG. 5 corresponds to the embodiment which has just been described, except as regards the means by which the cover is connected to the neck 4.
According to the embodiment of FIG. 5, the sleeve 6 is somewhat elastic and is stepped at its lower edge as shown in it $ this stepped part cooperating with the lower side of an external bead 12 of the neck 4. The end surface lower 13 of the sleeve 6 is substantially conical, so that the closure cover, using the elasticity of the sleeve, can be forced over the mouth of the neck; during this operation, the lower end of this sleeve will become distended by the cooperation of the end surface 13 with the bead 12 of the bottle.
In this way, in this operation, the closing cover is connected to the bottle without rotation of this cover, and also in this case, the rim 8 in the closed position is elastically deformed by its pressure against the seat 5.
According to Figures 6 to 9, the upper edge of the container 1 consists of a sealed rim 8 in the form of a hollow truncated cone tapering upwards. This rim is thinner than the adjacent side wall of the container, and the latter is made of a material such that its thicker sections are relatively stiff and its thinner sections are relatively elastic. Preferably, the container is made of a suitable plastic material, such as polythene or polyamide. In the embodiment of Figures 6 to 8, the outer side of the container 1 is provided with a net 10 for receiving. an internal thread 9 of the sleeve 6 of the closure cover.
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
This can be made of a hard or semi-hard material (metal sheet, rigid or semi-rigid plastic, etc.). When the closing cover is screwed onto the container, the lower side of part 7 will elastically deform the flange 8 which will tilt down and inward, as shown in figure 7, and the flange by elastic pressure will closely abut part 7 of the cover. By this arrangement the opening of the receptacle will be very well closed.
In the embodiment of Figure 9 the container has a sealing lip 8 similar to that described with reference to Figures 6 to 8, but in Figure 9 the means by which the cover is held in the closed position includes an outer bead. 12 on the container, this bead in the closed position of the cover cooperating with an inwardly projecting rim 11 of the sleeve portion 6 of the cover. The xxxxxxxxx lower surface 13 of the sleeve 6 is shaped substantially conically, so that the cover can be forced over the opening of the container, during which operation the lower edge of the cover, due to its elasticity, is widened by the cooperation of the conical surface 13 with the conical surface 14 forming the upper side of the bead 12.
The cover is made of a semi-rigid or flexible material allowing some elastic deformation of the cover when it is forced onto or removed from the container, after which the cover returns to its normal shape. Also, in this case, the container and the cover may be made of a suitable plastic material.
The tapered interior of the sealing rim 8 of the embodiments of Figures 6 to 9 forms a direct continuation of the interior of the adjacent portion of the side wall of the container. When removing the cover, the free edge of the rim can serve as a cleaning edge whereby material sticking to fingers, a brush or other object can be returned to the container.
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
When made of certain materials, the construction with the sealing rim 8 of the various embodiments requires reinforcement, in order to prevent the formation of roughness or cracks in the thin rim which would deteriorate the effect of the rim. sealing. For this purpose, the free edge of the rim is provided with a bead 15 which may have various cross sections, as shown in Figures 10 to 12.
In each embodiment, the cone angle of the frustoconical sealing rim 8 can be from about 30 to about 120.
