<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

IMPROVEMENTS TO: CLOSING DEVICES: OF CONTAINERS.
The present invention relates to improvements to container closure devices and, in particular, to devices of the type comprising a rigid outer element and an equally rigid inner element, these two elements delimiting between them a chamber, in which is accommodated a third element, which is deformable and, under certain circumstances, also elastic.
In the closing devices to which the invention relates in particular, each of the three aforementioned elements has an orifice, but the orifice formed in the internal support element must be offset with respect to the orifices formed respectively. in 'the deformable element' and in the outer element, that is to say that there can be no overlap, not even partial, between the orifice made in the inner element and the orifices made in the outer element and in the deformable element. On the other hand, these last two orifices must, at least in part, be superimposed, that is to say that they are established opposite one another in the external element and in the internal element. .
The container closing device according to the invention is applied to containers which must be hermetically sealed and in which a vacuum is created after filling said containers and applying to them a closing device, such as a cover or shutter.
The invention applies, in general, to the closing of various containers, such as cans of metal or other impervious material as well as bottles, flasks or the like, provided with a lid or stopper. screwed, crimped, welded or other. The invention finds a particularly advantageous application in the technique of closing bottles or similar containers with the aid of obturators, of the so-called "crowned stopper" type, * such as they are used to close bottles. of milk, beer, mineral water, etc ...
According to the invention]! the aforementioned inner element is given a shape such that it has a hollow in its face facing the possibly elastic deformable element. In principle, this hollow may present
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
dimensions and any shape, but it is advantageous to give it a curved shape with a large radius of curvature, preferably avoiding that the edges of the recess in question have sharp edges, which could damage the deformable element and / or not to ensure a perfect application of the latter element against the lower element, which, as will appear in the remainder of this specification, is essential to ensure the closing device according to the invention is safe. full efficiency.
The hollow formed in the aforementioned interior element can be obtained by removing material from the upper face of this element, so that the latter has an upper face provided with a recess, while its lower face remains flat. However, when the interior element is desired to have a small thickness, the aforesaid hollow is preferably obtained by bending the element in question towards the interior of the container to be closed.
In the case where use is made of a deformable element exhibiting good elasticity, which is the case when a deformable element made of rubber or of a similar material is used, it is advantageously possible to impart to this element a shape such that in the unsolicited state it has, on its face facing the upper face of the inner support element, a bending corresponding substantially, in shape and dimensions, to the recess formed in the upper face of said element interior. In this case, as soon as the deformable element is freed from the stress which tended to keep it away from the internal support element, it comes back to apply, by its own elasticity, against the latter element.
On the other hand, if use is made of an element which is deformable, but which is not elastic or which does not have sufficient elasticity so that, in the unstressed state, it comes back to rest against the inner element, it is preferable , according to another feature of the invention, of giving the orifice, advantageously circular, formed in the outer element, a diameter greater than that of the corresponding orifice formed in the deformable element.
Thanks to this arrangement, the application, when a suitable vacuum has been obtained inside the container, of a pressure, such as atmospheric pressure, through the orifice made in the external element of the device. closure on the deformable element has the effect of bringing the latter back against the inner element and of remaining firmly applied against the latter.
Other features and details of the invention will become apparent from the description of the drawings appended hereto, which represent, by way of non-limiting examples, two embodiments of a device for closing containers according to invention.
In these drawings: - Figures 1, 2 and 3 are diametral sections of a bottle neck on which is mounted a closure device according to the invention, the deformable element of this device being shown in three positions. different tions, and - Figures 4, 5 and 6 are similar views illustrating a second embodiment of a device according to the invention, the deformable element of this device also occupying three different positions.
In these different figures, the same reference notations designate identical elements.
The closure device shown in the drawings essentially comprises an outer element designated as a whole by the reference numeral 1 and affecting, in the drawings, the shape of a shutter of the so-called "cap-crown" type. This crown-stopper is crimped, by its lateral pleated skirt 2, on the neck 3 of a bottle and has an orifice 5 in the center of its circular part 4.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
The outer element 1 defines with an inner element 6 a chamber 7, in which is mounted a deformable element 8, for example made of rubber or a similar material. This deformable element 8 is clamped on its periphery between the outer element 1 and the inner element 6, which serves as a support for it. There are furthermore, centrally an orifice 9 established opposite the orifice 5 formed in the outer element 1.
In the inner element 6 is formed an orifice 10, which, as the drawings clearly show, is offset from the orifices 5 and 9, that is to say that the orifice 10 never ensures direct communication. and rectilinear between the inside of the container and the outside of the latter. The orifice 10 in question is arranged in a recess 14 provided centrally in the interior element 6.
This hollow 14 was obtained by bulging said element 6 towards the inside of the bottle.
Finally, under the inner element 6 is a washer 11 made of a compressible material, such as cork, serving to ensure a tight seal between the neck 3 of the bottle and the crown cap or outer element.
In the embodiment of the invention illustrated in FIGS. 1 to 3, the deformable element 8 is in the form of a flat disc which is deformable but not elastic. In addition, the orifice 5 made in the outer element 1 has a diameter greater than that of the orifice 9 made in the deformable element 8, the orifices ¯ being., Moreover, coaxial.
In FIG. 1, the deformable element 8 is applied against the outer element 1, as a result of the suction exerted in front of the orifice 5 by a vacuum machine, not shown. When the deformable element occupies this position, the air in the bottle can be sucked out of it by passing through the orifices 10, 9 and 5, following the path indicated by the arrows 12.
When the suction of the vacuum machine is released, when the desired degree of vacuum has been obtained in the bottle, a pressure, such as atmospheric pressure, is allowed to be exerted in the direction indicated by arrows 13 in FIG. 2, on the part surrounding the orifice 9 of the deformable element 8 and this because of the difference in diameter existing between the orifices 5 and 9.
As a result of the vacuum prevailing in the chamber 7, the pressure exerted on the aforementioned part of the deformable element 8 is sufficient to detach the latter from the circular part 4 of the crown cap 1, to such an extent that the deformable element 8 acquires a position, such as that illustrated in FIG. 2, in which atmospheric pressure is allowed to be exerted on almost the entire upper surface of the deformable element 8. The latter is thus pushed con - Being the interior element 6-and fits into the hollow 14 formed therein, as shown in FIG. 3.
When the deformable element 8 is in the position shown in figure 3, the communication between the interior of the bottle and the chamber 4 is interrupted, by the fact that the orifices'9 and 10 are respectively closed. by the deformable element 8 and by the internal element 6.
In the embodiment of the invention, illustrated in Figures 4 to 6, the deformable element 8 is highly elastic and has a domed shape, as shown in Figure 4. When it is no longer subjected to a stress on the deformable element 8 therefore always tends to return to the position illustrated in FIG. 4. However, the application of a suction to the orifice 5 of the crown plug has the effect of detaching the element. deformable element 8 of the inner element 6, so that this deformable element comes, passing through the position illustrated in FIG. 5, against the circular part 4 of the crown cap 1, as indicated in figure 6.
On the other hand, when the suction is released at the orifice 5, the deformable element 8 resumes, by its sole elasticity, its original convex shape.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
shown in figure 4.
As shown in Figures 4 to 6, it is no longer necessary, in this embodiment, to give the orifices 5 and 9 different diameters, no pressure or substantially no pressure being necessary to return the pressure. deformable element 8 against the inner element 6.
The container closure devices according to the invention have many advantages. Thus, the particularities of the invention can be implemented without it being necessary to modify the shape or the dimensions of the current shutters or covers. In particular when it is a question of closing bottles or similar receptacles with the aid of closures of the so-called "crown-cap" type, no modification should be made to the types of shutters in use, only the shape of the deformable element 8 to be modified so as to form the chamber 7 in which the deformable element is mounted.
Changing the shape and dimensions of known plugs would, in practice, involve serious drawbacks, as it would require plug manufacturers to modify their stamping and other machines to a substantial extent.
In addition to the aforementioned advantage, the device according to the invention offers greater safety than the known devices, by the fact that accidental loosening is practically impossible, due to the fact that the deformable element and the inner element, forming a valve., are difficult to access from outside the container.
It is obvious that the invention is not exclusively limited to the embodiments described above and that various modifications can be made in the arrangement, the constitution and the form of the elements involved in its realization, to provided that these modifications do not contradict the object of the following claims.
It goes without saying in particular that the invention can be implemented, whatever the sealing method applied to a container, obviously on the condition that it is a question of establishing a vacuum therein.
