<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

The present invention relates to moldable compositions and aims to provide such moldable compositions having significantly improved properties and novel characteristics.
The present invention is based on the discovery that the incorporation of a water soluble or dispersible hydroxylated polyvinyl compound in which 20 to 50%, and preferably from 35 to. 505, carbon atoms of the polyvinyl chain are attached to hydroxyl groups, substantially improves the characteristics of such compositions
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
EMI2.1
molds that are self-hardening in the presence of water.
Examples of moldable compositions suitable for the purposes of the present invention are given by mixtures containing hydraulic cements such as Portland cement or high alumina cement, extended if desired with, for example, ground slag from blast furnaces. , 'calcium sulphate or calcium sulphate hemihydrate or' Sorel cement together with water.
Polyvinyl compounds suitable for the purpose of the present invention are, for example, partially or completely hydrolyzed or alcoholic polyvinyl esters and by the reaction products of said hydrolyzed or alcoholic polyvinyl esters with aldehydes or ketones. Other examples of hydroxylated polyvinyl compounds are the partially or completely hydrolyzed or alcoholic copolymers of polyvinyl esters with other ethylenically unsaturated monomers, such as 11-ethylene; esters of acrylic, metacrylic, fumaric or .... maleic acid; vinyl chloride, crotonic acid and acrylic acid.
The water-soluble hydroxylated polyvinyl compounds are preferably incorporated into the moldable compositions in amounts between 0.2% (calculated on the total dry weight of the moldable composition) and an amount which is not high enough to. impair the possibility of molding said composition. In general, it will be found that suitable amounts will be between 0.2 and 5% of the total dry weight of the composition. The preferred limits are between 0.2 and 2.5%.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
When self-curing moldable compositions are prepared in accordance with the present invention, a number of appreciable and unexpected advantages are obtained.
Thus, it has been found in. Compositions as defined above containing polyvinyl alcohol in amounts corresponding to the preferred limits mentioned above, when they are die-cast or by vibration, can be removed. without damage out of the molds much earlier than an identical compound which does not contain polyvinyl alcohol. In most cases, removal from the mold can be done within a few minutes of the completion of the molding operation. strength which is far superior to that of the analogous alcohol-free polyvinyl composition.
It has further been found that articles made of moldable compounds containing polyvinyl hydroxyl compounds, such as polyvinyl alcohol, should not be subjected to the operation. which is very time consuming and requires considerable space,. of "cooking" with water or steam before adequate resistance is reached. Another advantage is the greatly reduced penetration of water during immersion in liquid water, and the much higher wet strength, of the molded articles according to the present invention. The strength of cured compositions containing polyvinyl alcohol far exceeds that of a composition not including the addition according to the present invention.
Further advantages deriving from the present invention are that the molded articles are more elastic and therefore have less tendency to crack or crack.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
The presence of the polyvinyl compound improves the adhesion of other surfaces so that the articles can be molded onto other materials such as concrete or metal.
In order to carry out the invention in practice, the hydroxylated polyvinyl compound is dissolved or dispersed in the aqueous phase which is used to form the self-hardening composition defined above. The composition is then prepared by mixing the aqueous solution or dispersion with self-hardening materials and, if desired, with suitable fillers. The composition thus obtained is placed in molds or forms where it can be subjected to pressure, vibration or tamping in order to effect consolidation.
The use of fillers for this purpose is well known in the art. Examples of such fillers consist of sand, natural or crushed stones, asbestos fibers, exfoliated vermiculite, metal fragments or powders or carborandum. Of course, the moldable compositions may contain other ingredients well known in the art. Ingredients which can be used within the scope of the present invention include materials suitable for accelerating or retarding the rate of the reaction, curing foam stabilizers or foam breakers, plasticizers of the hydroxylated polyvinyl compound.
The invention will be illustrated by the following examples:

EMI5.1
carbon of the polyvinyl chain attached to hydroxyl groups ,. and 6.5% attached to acetyl groups. A 5% aqueous solution had a viscosity of 11 centipoise at 25 C.
The compositions obtained according to the formula given above were placed in a mold and were molded under a pressure of 105 kg. per square centimeter. The pressure was maintained for 30 seconds. The molded articles were removed from the mold five minutes after the pressure was released, except when no polyvinyl alcohol had been incorporated by 17 hours before removal from the mold.
The molded articles were then maintained under normal atmospheric conditions.
