'Voorwerpen van thermoplastische massa's worden door persen of spuitgieten in vormen vervaardigd. In het eerste geval worden koude of ook voorverwarmde korrels of tablet- jes in de geopende vorm gebracht en door sluiten van de eerst verhitte vorm onder hoge druk wordt de vormholte opgevuld. De vorm wordt dan afgekoeld en het hard geworden voorwerp uit de vorm verwijderd. Voor spuitgieten wordt de thermoplastische massa in een verwarmingscilinder vloeibaar
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

The invention relates to a method for manufacturing molded articles of a thermoplastic mass by injection molding.
Articles made of thermoplastic masses are produced by pressing or injection molding into molds. In the first case, cold or even preheated granules or tablets are introduced into the opened mold and the mold cavity is filled by closing the mold, which was previously heated under high pressure. The mold is then cooled and the hardened article removed from the mold. Before injection molding, the thermoplastic mass becomes liquid in a heating cylinder
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
made and pressed into the mold by means of pistons or screws through a spray nozzle, which communicates with the tightly closed mold during filling.
The mold is cooled or kept at a relatively low temperature to allow the mass to harden in the mold. After the object has hardened, it is removed from the mold.
It has now been found that especially in injection molding difficulties arise when large objects with very thin walls are to be produced. The mass then already hardens before the entire mold has been filled, because the flow of the mass in the narrow mold spaces experiences a very great resistance, while cooling too quickly also occurs. These difficulties are obviated by the method of the invention, which is an association of injection molding and pressing. According to the invention, the not yet completely closed mold is partially filled by injection molding with the starting mass liquefied in the heating cylinder, in particular in places with a large hollow space, which are present because the mold is not yet completely closed.
The amount of liquid mass put into the mold corresponds to the filling of the entire mold space, but at first only one. part thereof, namely the part lying in the vicinity of the nozzle. Due to the thicker wall in this place, the mass remains fluid for longer. Immediately after the injection and as long as the mass is still liquid, the mold is completely closed, so that the mass fills the entire mold space in a very short time. The very high form-closing forces occurring in every injection molding machine are usefully used over a stroke of a few millimeters to completely fill the mold space.
The work done, force x stroke
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
is converted into heat by the friction of the viscous mass and thereby temporarily increases its fluidity, so that even very thin walls can be produced which are not possible in a completely closed mold by pure injection molding. 'This increase in the temperature of the mass in the mold space also has the effect that any excess mass injected into the not yet completely closed mold is forced back through the opening of the spray nozzle into the heating cylinder during the last part of the closing stroke, in particular if during pressing the pressure on the plunger disappears or is released.
The method according to the invention is explained in more detail below with the aid of the somewhat schematic drawing.
Figure 1 represents a cross-section through a mold for a large vessel with a wall thickness of about 0.7 mm in the position where the mold is not yet fully closed, while Figure 2 shows a corresponding cross-section of the fully closed mold .
According to Figure 1, an amount of the liquid mass 2 is injected through the spray nozzle 1 of the heating cylinder (not shown) of an injection molding machine into the mold space 3 through the narrow opening 4. Since the mold 5 is not yet completely closed, the space for the mass is at the location of the bottom and the side wall of the vessel to be formed, greater than corresponds to the final wall thickness of the vessel 6 (see figure 2). Immediately after injection, the spraying pressure is released by pulling back the piston. At the same time the mold is closed to the stop position by the closing mechanism of the machine, not shown, whereby the still liquid mass fills the entire mold, as shown in FIG.
The injected mass flows back '
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
through the opening 4 in the heating cylinder. The mold is cooled by the usual means, not shown, or maintained at a temperature which facilitates the complete filling of the mold space, but ensures a sufficiently rapid hardening of the vessel.
The present method offers advantages not only for the production of thin-walled articles, but also for those of thick-walled articles. Namely, in the latter case, collapses of the molded object due to shrinkage in the mold during cooling can be much better prevented. The mold space can be kept under a high pressure after it has been completely filled, which counteracts the formation of collapses and also blisters. To this end, the mold is not completely closed to the stop position, while the piston is kept under pressure in its forward position to prevent the mass from flowing back from the mold into the heating cylinder.
