<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

The invention relates to a protective sheath for x-ray tubes, the wall of which has a ray exit window, made of an insulating material, for example synthetic resin or a pressed insulating substance. It is customary to fill the sheath with oil and so that the oil layer between the wall of the tube and the window through which the X-rays must pass remains thin, the window is connected to the wall of the sheath by a edge which is directed inward.
When, in front of the ray outlet opening, there is a closure, by the fact that an ionization chamber is connected to the sheath or that a partial closure is effected by a diaphragm limiting a beam, the air contained in the closed enclosure forms a sort of air bubble in

filling with oil. This air is strongly ionized by x-rays and a, compared to the insulating material of the. window and when filling the groin with oil, great electrical conductivity.
The influence of this air corresponds to that of a grounded electrode located a small distance from the glass wall of the x-ray tube under the effect of the charge of the. glass wall, there may be a high electric field intensity which causes a potential distribution on the window the oil layer and the glass wall, while the voltage must be absorbed, to a large extent, by the material window insulator with very low conductivity. This causes spark discharges through the material.
The invention provides a very simple arrangement for avoiding this harmful phenomenon. According to the invention, the space which closes, on the inside, the window assembled by an edge returning to the wall of the sheath, is at least partially filled with a highly insulating material, consisting of a substance comprising a large number of air bubbles, separated from each other.
The enclosure can be filled with loose pieces of material and be closed by a wall that transmits X-rays well.
It is also possible to fill the enclosure with a substance having a foamy structure, for example polystyrol.
There is nothing to prevent this elastic substance from protruding from the wall of the tube sheath, because when the sheath is pressed against a flat wall, the substance is compressed.
The advantageous result obtained with the device according to the invention can be explained by the fact that although the ionization takes place in the enclosure separated, by the window, from the inner part of the sheath, this ionization remains. limited to the air bubbles and that the air occlusions, thus made cpnduc trices, are isolated from each other. The substance used for the filling therefore absorbs part of the potential difference between the wall of the tube and the sheath of the tube, which

reduces the electrical charge of the window. oil layer and tube wall.
The description of the appended drawing, given by way of non-limiting example, will make it clear how the invention can be implemented, the particularities which emerge both from the text and from the drawing being well entandu part of the invention.
The drawing shows an embodiment of the part of the sheath of the tube according to the invention, in which the ray outlet window 3 is formed. The wall 1 of the sheath surrounds the X-ray tube 2, which comprises an cathode 3 and an anode 4. The sheath can be filled with oil. The ray outlet window 5 is connected, by the edge 6, to the wall 1 of the sheath. The enclosure bounded by the window and the edge is filled with a substance 8 of foamy structure.
