<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
<Desc/Clms Page number 10>

The invention relates to a device for smoothing the cut side faces of the hooking members of a zipper or slide fastener, fixed to a fabric tape or the like, these members being engaged by their side faces in helical grooves. , which, on a part of their periphery, do not exhibit any inclination and are formed in two parallel conveying cylinders rotating in opposite directions, this device comprising, in addition, two discs or smoothing rollers, to parallel axes, which can rotate freely and roll on the two lateral faces of said hooking members while being driven by eccentrics.
The aforesaid conveyor device is used in a fully automatic or semi-automatic machine, for the manufacture of zippers, with a device for clamping the hooking members on a strip provided with a bead, and it performs, at each complete revolution of the cylinders
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
dres conveyors an interruption of the transport of the tape or of the chain of the hooking members, which transport corresponds to the distance separating the hooking members from each other on the tape. During these periods, when the chain of hooking members or of the closure tape is stopped, it is possible, for example, to engage hooking members manufactured beforehand or stamped directly in the machine, on the edge with the bead of the tape, these members then being clamped on this edge.
During these periods, it is also possible to subject the lateral edges of the hooking members to a machining treatment, for example to a rounding and / or to a smoothing.
Known devices for smoothing the side faces of zipper hooks which are already clamped on a closure tape include, for example, two smoothing rollers set in the same plane and placed. facing each other with respect to the chain of the fastening members while being mounted in the arms of a fork, the periphery of these rollers, while the chain of the aforesaid members is stopped, rolling in a back and forth movement along the side faces of these members using a particular control, by eccentric, of the fork.
These known smoothing rollers are established, for example, downstream of the aforementioned conveying rolls, which rotate in opposite directions, the peripheral grooves of which have, on a part of their circumference, an inclination corresponding to the single spacing or multiple hooking members of a chain of the closure while the remaining part of their periphery, advantageously the predominant part, does not exhibit any inclination. The hooking members, already tightened on the closing tape, engage in these grooves by their lateral sides, so that the two
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
cylinders form a conveyor device, operating intermittently, for these organ chains.
The organ chains must pass, beyond the conveyor device, into the straightening device, so that a special mechanism has to intervene to hold them in the straightening device.
Apart from this, an individual drive mechanism must be provided for both the conveying rolls and the smoothing rolls.
With respect to what is known, the invention consists in mounting, in the known devices specified above, the smoothing discs or rollers or the like, at the inlet ends of the two transport rollers or inside them. cylinders, then passing through peripheral slots formed in the wall of these cylinders, on eccentric axes parallel to the cylinders and on which these smoothing or similar disks can turn freely, the eccentricity of these axes corresponding to the parts without inclination of the grooves and the periphery of the discs or the like, on the eccentricity side, located near the side faces to be smoothed out of the hooking members.
In this way, a special mechanism for maintaining the chain of the hooking members in the straightening device and an individual drive of this straightening device become superfluous, which considerably simplifies the manufacture of the device in question since it suffices that each of the two transport cylinders bears on its front faoe oriented towards the inlet and / or inside, in the case where these cylinders are hollow, an eccentric axis,. parallel to the axis of the cylinder, on which the disc or smoothing roller can freely turn, these discs or rollers rolling, during each complete revolution of the transport cylinders, on the side edges of the
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
hooking members which are adjacent to these discs or rollers and are, moreover, stopped.
It is therefore necessary to provide only a drive mechanism, simply, for the two transport rollers which rotate in opposite directions.
The accompanying drawings show, by way of examples, two embodiments of the invention.
The fie. 1 shows, in elevation, a fully automatic machine for the manufacture of fastening members of a zipper, this machine comprising a conveyor device formed by two cylinders in which are housed the smoothing rollers in accordance with l 'invention.
Figs. 2 and 3 show, on a larger scale and respectively in elevation and in section along a-b fig. 2, the conveying rolls, one of these rolls being cut to show the smoother roll housed therein.
Figs. 4 and 5 show, respectively in elevation and in partial horizontal section along the broken line V-V fig. 4, a modified automatic machine for the manufacture of hooking members of a zipper, provided with a smoothing device. established upstream of the transport cylinders, these cylinders ocquering their transport position.
Figs. 6 and 7 show, similarly to Figs: 4 and 5, the same machine with the transport rollers in a position not used for transport.
Fig. 8 shows, in axial section, part of the smoothing rollers in their active position with respect to the edges to be smoothed out of the hooking members.
1 denotes a tape on which the hooking members 2 are clamped with the aid of a device.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
fastening tif 3 operating intermittently and a pressing device 4 established immediately downstream of the device 3. The fastening members 2 can be stamped or cut directly. in the automatic machine, a profiled strip or a flat wire and can be fed to the fixing device 3 or be fed by a magazine which brings them to the strip. The tape, on which the hooking members are clamped, advances periodically over a distance corresponding to the spacing of two hooking members or to a mul- tiple of this spacing between the two transport rollers 5.
For this purpose and as known, the two cylinders 5 rotate in opposite directions and comprise, on their periphery, opposite grooves 6. The grooves 6 have, on part of their periphery and in accordance with the desired pitch which is equal to the single or multiple spacing of the hooking members, an inclination, this part being designated by 6a, while the grooves, in the part 6b of their periphery, do not include any inclination. It has been found, in practice, that the angular amplitude of part 6a is advantageously between 90 and 1209 and that of part 6b in addition to 270 and 240.
The organs 2 clamped on the tape 1 engage, by their lateral edges, in the grooves 6 of the two transport rollers 5, so that the chain of parts, 4 each complete revolution of the cylinders 5, rotating in opposite directions, advancing over a distance corresponding to the single or multiple separation of two neighboring members, the transport taking place exclusively through the inclined part 6a of the grooves while for the parts 6b of glues, the tape do not move. During this last period of time, one or more hooking members are each time engaged and pressed on the tape. In addition, laying
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
During this period, smoothing of the cut edges of the hooking members must take place.
For this purpose, two smoothing rollers 7 are used which, for the example shown in FIGS. 1 to 3, are housed in the transport cylinders 5, completely or partially hollow and which are engaged on axes 8, advantageously by means of ball bearings 9, so as to be able to rotate freely thereon. The axes 8 are eccentric with respect to the longitudinal axis 13 of the conveyor rolls 5 and are placed parallel to these axes in the rolls 5, the eccentricity being directed towards the peripheral parts 6b of the rolls which do not exhibit tilt. Advantageously, the location of the eccentric axis corresponds to the middle of the part 6b of the grooves which does not exhibit any inclination.
The smoothing discs or rollers 7 comprise a profile suitable for smoothing, this profile possibly being formed by a peripheral groove 10 (FIG. 2). For the example of fig. 1 to 3 the thickness of the smoothing disc corresponds to the width of the grooves 6 of the conveying rolls 5 and, on the side where the eccentricity exists, the smoothing discs 7 pass through peripheral slots 11 formed in the parts 6b of the grooves, such that the periphery of the smoothing discs 7 can, after passing through the slots 11, come into contact with the lateral edges of the hooking members while rolling on these edges.
The two smoothing discs 7 / are placed symmetrically facing each other, so that the hooking members are biased symmetrically. At each complete revolution of the cylinders 5, the smoothing discs roll by their profiled periphery on the two cut side edges of the hooking members 2, so that these edges are smoothed, or even rounded, when the
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
contoured periphery of the smoothing discs not only covers. the side edges of these members but also overlaps them.
The eccentricity of the axes of rotation 8 of the sliding discs 7 can be modified by suitable means, known per se, so that the pressure of the discs 7 against the side faces of the hooking members can be adjusted. The attachment members 2; tightened on the tape 1, are located near the smoothing rollers or in the longitudinal action zone of the transport rolls so that their front edge rests against a stop 12, formed by a bar, as visible in FIG. 3. This stop forms, on the one hand, a guiding member for the hooking members during their drive by the cylinders 5 and it takes, on the other hand, the forces which occur during smoothing.
In each conveying cylinder 5, several smoothing discs 7 can be placed axially one behind the other on an eccentric axis of rotation 8. It is also possible to assemble several smoothing discs on a smoothing roller and, in this case, the conveying cylinder 5. must have, at the location where the parts 6b of the grooves are located, a corresponding number of slots 11 (or a single sufficiently wide slot) through which the suitably profiled peripheral part (s) of the roller can pass, so such that the edges of the grooves of this roller are tight against the side edges of the hooking members and roll over these edges.
By using several smoothing discs 7, placed one after the other, or by using a sufficiently large straightening drum, each hooking member is subjected to multiple smoothing, which can be advantageous when it comes to Relatively relatively thick grippers having cut / coarse edges.
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
It follows from the above that the combination of conveying rolls with smoothing discs or rollers and their eccentric establishment in the conveying rolls requires only a drive mechanism for the conveying cylinders and not a driving mechanism. special drive for smoothing discs or rollers.
As the hollow construction of the conveying rolls or the eccentric establishment of the smoothing discs or rollers in the hollow conveying cylinders as well as the formation of the slits in the wall of these cylinders are not very simple, from a machining point of view. , especially since the conveying rolls have to be journaled at both ends in the machine and be driven in rotation, in practice the embodiment shown in FIGS. 4 to 8.
Also for this embodiment, it is a fully automatic machine for manufacturing chains of hooking members in which these members are stamped and cut from a wire, said members being engaged on a tape 1 of the closure and clamped thereon by means of devices 3 and 4. The tape 1 is driven, as described for example with reference to FIGS. 1 to 3, by two transport cylinders 5, rotating in opposite directions, of which
6a the ribs have, on part / of their periphery, an inclination corresponding to the single or multiple spacing, whereas, on the remaining part 6b of the periphery, the grooves do not present any inclination. The two vertical transport rollers 5 are journaled, by their ends, in bearings 5a and 5b.
On the upper front face of the cylinders 5 are fixed parallel eccentric axes 8, on which the two discs or rollers can freely rotate.
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
straighteners 7 established between the upper end faces of the cylinders 5 and the upper bearings 5b. Each axis 8 is eccentric on the side of the corresponding conveying cylinder where the parts 6b of the grooves having no inclination are located.
The periphery of these smoothing discs 7 is chosen so that this periphery, on the eccentricity side, is tight, as a result of the rotation of the transport rollers 5, with pressure against the lateral edges of the hooking members 2 and rolls on these edges as a result of the mounting of these discs.
Smoothing discs. 7 may have a thickness corresponding to that of a hooking member but it is also possible to choose the thickness or the width of the discs or rollers 7 in such a way that several hooking members are stressed simultaneously by the periphery smoothing rollers and can be smoothed simultaneously along their lateral sides. For the example shown in fig. 4 to 8, the width of the smooth rollers 7 corresponds to two hooking members 2, the periphery of these rollers 7 being provided with two peripheral grooves in accordance with the spacing of the members of a chain of the closure , the width of each groove being adapted to that of the hooking members.
The profiles of the grooves of the smoothing rollers may be different and such that, during the engagement of a hooking member in the smoothing rollers, one first obtains a prior smoothing or a break of the edges of the side faces of the members of 'hooking up, and the second groove of the smoothing rollers performs the final smoothing. The profiles can also be chosen in such a way, as shown in fig. 8, that the first groove 7a has, for example, a substantially rectangular trapezoidal cross section, and the groove 7b a substantially rectangular cross section.
<Desc / Clms Page number 10>
Also for the example of fig. 4 to 8, the head faces of the hooking members are in contact, as can be seen on the horizontal sections of FIGS. 5 and 7 and near the smoothing rollers 7 as well as in the longitudinal area of the
12 conveying rolls 5, with a stop / bar-shaped, so that during each complete revolution of the conveying rolls and during the smoothing which results from the eccentric mounting of the smoothing rollers 7, the forces produced during the smoothing hooks are transmitted / to the stop 12; bar-shaped, and absorbed by glue.
Near the transport rollers 5, the hooking members are held freely, by their head face, against the face oriented towards them of the stop 12 as a result of the rotation of the two transport rollers 5 in opposite directions, as shown by arrows in fig. 5 and 7.
According to the invention, it is also possible, in addition to the smoothing rollers established on the upper end face of the transport rollers 5, to accommodate other smoothing discs inside the transport rollers as in the case of figs. 1 to 3. In accordance with the invention, it is of course also possible to use the smoothing discs or rollers, in combination with the transport rollers 5, for semi-automatic machines used for the manufacture of slide fasteners. or sliding, when in these machines no hooking members which have been subjected to a prior treatment are used.
